This FO has been a yawnfest

Virtually. Only 3 men are up for the challenge. Was to be expected but cmon, this is ridiculous. Federer, Nadal and Djokovic have lost a combined 2 sets. :o

I was sooooo looking forward to this tournament but thus far it's been one to forget. Let's hope the Semi's and Final save the tournament.

In RG you can only expect Federer - Davydenko/Ferrer and Nadal - Djokovic semis, so yes - it was kind of expected, as these 5 players are 70 times better than the rest of the tour combined on clay. But of course I agree that it's

borefest, especially compared to AO and even more compared to US Open last year

No epic 5 set matches over 5 hours where the crowd goes crazy, no alarms and no surprises. Yes I am very disappointed.

I thought 2006 and 2007 were a bit tedious but this has been pretty piss poor.

So few decent matches, even in the early rounds, where RG tends to produce its better matches these days.

Wake me up when it's over and we're on the grass.

Not Nadal's fault, that he is so far ahead of these guys, he can play right handed and have 1 serve and still win nearly every match in straight sets.

It could be saved from the tedium, but anyone of us who post on this board could win the 10 million Euro or US dollar lottery.

yeah... i think that is the way its gonna be for a while yet now the top 2 have got the greatness aura well established... and the 3rd has started to follow as well...

and i like the order... i would rather 4 or 5 main stars have long, historical rivalries... than read about how tennis is in disarray looking for someone to give meaning and direction to tennis...

fed and rafa have set the next few years up nicely...

The earlier rounds were much better, moya vs schwank was a classic as was berdych vs llodra (for sheer drama that one)

towards the end of the tournie, ljubicic vs davydenko was suprisingly interesting to watch and more recently radek vs ferrer was a scrappy but entertaining affair.

Well I greatly enjoyed the Moya/Schwank match, the 4th set of PHM/Schwack and Ferru/Hewitt, part of Ferru/Radek parts of Davy/Ivan.

This makes me realize that I hope that Schwanck improves and continues to grow and is more of a factor next year.

There have been 119 singles matches played in this tourney that Nadal did not play in. Almost none of them were that good. I don't think he's the reason it's been a disappointing tournament.
I just posted on another thread that I'd bet this FO has had the lowest number of 5 set matches in history. I'm to lazy to do the research, but it's just a hunch. Let's just hope the semi's produce some highly competitive tennis.

yep, no surprises. Still i rather have rafa beat djokovic in straights than have djoko in the final. Even if roger has more chances of wining against djoko. I rather have fed lose to rafa than have the faker in the final

yes, pretty boring, only gulbis has been unpredictable, I wonder if the hectic clay court season wore them all out. Still hope for monfils and djokovic to make it interesting with huge upsets.

It's not that bad. Sure, there hasn't been that many big battles that people will remember, but it can change. But at least it's good that Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are still playing for the trophy. It means that whoever wins it, has to go through the toughest test possible.

Having said this, I still kind of miss those big matches played in the middle of the night at the AO.

Boy do I agree with this. My favorite however, from a purely selfish standpoint, is the US Open. It's played on my time zone, and the night matches are awesome. Week 2 is my favorite week of the year. I always take vacation that week and watch tennis from 11am, until ????

It's like something is missing this year. The most interesting match turned out to be on the women's side for me.....Safina and Sharapova. I'm just glad the clay season is pretty much over.

Agree no classics or 5 set thrillers but I've still enjoyed it. Hopefully we get cracking SFs but can't help feeling after Hamburg that Rafa/Nole will be a damp squib. Fed/Gonzalez has been shunted (understandably) on to Lenglen tomorrow so probably won't get to see all of that either but has the potential to be entertaining.

But this is a great sporting time of year. Euro 2008 starts Saturday and no British teams to clutter up the schedule so we might get some decent matches. And then there's Queen's and Wimbledon to come. Life is good.

06-03-2008, 06:06 PM
Last year was already a snorefest but this time they were even more unlucky with the weather. Not only because of the delays but these cold, damp and heavy conditions play so much into Nadal's hands.

We already saw what he could do last year on grass in these conditions, imagine what he could do on clay. I see no reason why he couldn't take this without dropping a set.

ESPN Intrenational showed the whole thing...It was the most exciting match I watched.. huge ball striking by both sides, and the added dimension of the crowd loving Safina and booing Shaeapova off the court. Oh yes, and for a twist Yuki actually applauding some of Safina's shots. And Sharapova's crowd irritaing screaming and final meltdown. It was 3 hours of great entertainment.

Watched highlights on TTC last night. So glad Safina won and I don't tend to enjoy women's matches. And I have seen a few good matches here but not as many as any of us really wanted to see. Highlight for me is still the Ferru/Hewitt match. And for sheer entertainment the Wara/Gonzo fest in its latter stages. Anytime the hubs sits and watches tennis is reason for a smile;)

There have been some classic moments.
- Isner up 2 sets to 0 against Chela.
- Tursunov giving GGL 2 bagels in a row.
- Ginepri beating Andreev and also being the favourite for a match on clay.
- Fish beating Calleri down a set and a break in 4 sets.

These were just small things, funny, but enough to save it.

The boring part has been to me (that's just me, not any of you Rafatards, before get out of your seats) Rafa cruising through his supposedly hard draw so easily it makes you think not even Djokovic or Federer have a chance against him. Now part of me wants Djokovic to have been in Federer's half, that might have made things more exciting.

he will lose a set to djoko and also to fed if fed reaches the final.
as far as looking more dangerous, i dont think so. people are forgetting that he isnt playing on grass or HC, its his home and he has always been like this.

maybe rafa fans have got so used to see him getting beaten on HCs that all of sudden his wins on his fav surface are looking too good.

rafa fans always recharge during this part of the season. no surprise

I agree, the last four days or so have been really dull, and subsequently I have lost most of my interest in the tournament. It probably would have been a tad more interesting had I been able to watch the Stepanek-Ferrer match. The earlier part of the tournament was very average and lacking in any standout matches, but it's more disappointing when you're heading into the business end of the tournament and the matches are terrible. The Almagro-Nadal match annoyed me the most, there was no way that the match should have been as one-sided and poor like that.

It doesn't help that many of the most exciting matches (on paper) seemed to be played at the same time on the same day - Gonzalez-Wawrinka, Hewitt-Ferrer, Ljubicic-Davydenko.
