I'd love to see a classic match and I guess Almagro may be due for a breakout, but even if that happen it would still mean a four-set match at best.

There are no indicators that Nadal is vulnerable. In fact, he looks like he's playing the best tennis of his career at this point.

Almagro is very capable of troubling Nadal.

He's served huge all week, and he his forehand and backhand can both be huge weapons. To win the match, he'll need everything to pretty much work out perfectly, which is highly unlikely. Nadal will win, but Almagro can easily take a set and if he doesn't, he'll still win at least 12 games.

Q. You said Rafa is No. 1 to you. Is it something personal, or is it
because you consider Rafa is a better player?

NICOLAS ALMAGRO: Well, to me, Rafa is No. 1 because he demonstrated that. He was champion here, finalist in Wimbledon. The way things are
going, he's so calm, so humble on the court, and he worked very hard to achieve what he has achieved.

And at the same time, he's very close to us. He helps us when we needed that. He is a wonderful friend. To me, he is No. 1. Quite clear he is No. 1. And I wish he is No. 1 to everybody, because he is going to win against Federer.

Rafa in 4.

that is more likely to happen if Almagro serves like hell and plays tough for a set or so. Almagro fired no less than 19 aces today so he does have a formidable serve going at the moment.

Almagro could be easily overwhelmed by the occasion and the fact that he is playing one of the greatest clay courters ever. If Nadal gets out of the blocks fast and humbles him in the first set, it may be hard for Almagro to recover.

Nadal also has Djokovic and Fed in mind now so he may really pour it on and get this done in under 2 hours.

A very interesting match, Almagro has the weapons to compete against Nadal, especially the serve and the backhand, but his movement and defence will be eventually exposed. I think Almagro will take a set here, so Nadal in 4. It could very well be the case that Almagro stands the best chance of upsetting Nadal out of all players remaining in the draw.

I don't think it will matter, unless Nadal is carrying some injury that we don't know about, and no, I don't have the blisters in mind. Nadal so far has spent 8.5 hours on court here, he reached the 2006 final having spent 18 hours. As we all know, he had enough there. I think only total time on court matters, not how much time an individual match takes.

He didn't, but as he's hinting at the result of the RG final he expects (Raf defeating Fed), I think that's what he meant.

Mugro didn't mention clay ;) so we can think he meant "overall" :)

I think we can take it any way we want, but I'm sure Almagro isn't that naive to not know Feds is still some 1000 points ahead of Raf... - not even to mention the fact that Djoko is a lot closer to Raf than Raf is to Fed. IF he indeed means 'overall', I guess it's wishful thinking from his part. ;)

i think you know of Almagro`s decided disadvanage in this match. one weakness is all a great player needs and it will be exploited to death.

aside from the fact that Almgaro cannot match the Clay Monster in the mental toughness department, he also carries another huge liability with him. its his one handed backhand. this match was over last week.

This backhand arguement is not a valid one when playing nadal ON clay...his biggest rival on clay is a one hander,,,no-one beats rafa on clay one hand, two hand, three hands......KEEPING in mind I refer to clay being RG and MC...

I hope the match is a quick 3-setter for Nadal, but Almagro is no slouch on clay. It seems odd to me, though. Almagro is always hyped as this great clay court specialist, but his results on the big clay stages have been lacking. This gives me hope for tomorrow :)

Rainy day, heavy conditions, this is the best scenario for Almagro in this specific match-up, he likes the big shows and he has nothing to lose here which should make him play well and if he does it, I think he will run Nadal close and I think he has way more chances to win than people think, but it´s always possible he can get too tight when close to see the finishing line, so I´d say Nadal in 5 sets, sth like 6-7 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-3

I am surprised that no one detected the humourus tone in Nico's reply. All Spanish players respect Rafa for his achievements and love him as a friend but that doesn't mean they won't try their guts out to win. It's funny how some posters on mtf create a world in their head and think that is the real world. I like Nico, not as much as I like Rafa obviously, and I think he will gve Rafa a hard time. Okay. I am just not sure if I see Mucho going a set unbroken in the third set of an RG match with Nadal. If it is that close nadal's intensity is going to be at its heighest and I think Almagro would struggle to deal with that.

Still, you are usually pretty accurate with predictions so we will have to wait and see.

Almagro, with 29 clay matches won, 2 clay titles and Valencia final, may have a chance to get a set if Rafa starts slow (he usually does) and his serve works.

Almagro is so overrated. He lost to Blake last year.:o

Nadal can't be defeated. This score can influence Djoko's mind in the semi...

Does Almagro suck or is Nadal just not letting him do anything?

I'm simply amazed!! Nadal's will power have fought off all our doubts of him not being as fit as previous years. He is playing better than ever. Poor Almagro. Simply amazing stuff from Nadal.

If you have ever played against a high topspin opponent, you can understand the utter frustration of Almagro. I have, past weekend, and not even on a high bound surface, just the average hardcourt, you know. At the end of the match I wasn't making so many UE's, but it was far too late.

Is our last conversation making a bit more sense to you after this past few days? You know the one, after Hamburg, where I said Nadal's playing the best tennis of his life? ;)

It is funny how people dismiss Almagro's chances based on a freaking press conference. He will try his best out there, based on the press conference logic we should be surprised that Nadal tends to win some games when facing Federer.

Way to get a prediction wrong :o

with all due respect to Deivid's and Merton's reasonable thoughts, I have to quote the following:

The hard work starts here nadal. Mess it up please

:haha::haha:

Nadal df Almagro 5-7 6-7 6-3 6-2 15-13 Would be a nice result

Don´t think he´s playing the best tennis of his life, tbh

It´s true he was good today, but Almagro played the poorest match on clay I´ve seen from him in a long long time, nerves caught him or don´t know what but Rafa won today "con la camiseta" and this doesn´t imply he´s playing the best tennis of his life, at least for me. And I´m not as sure as everyone of you he´s getting past Djokovic on Thrusday. I still have fresh in my mind what I saw in Hamburg and I think Nole stands a good chance

I don't think he'll be getting past Djoko on Thursday either, as the mens semis aren't played till Friday. Unless the schedule has chaged - has it? Only one men's semi on Friday?

Your faith in Nole is touching Deivid.

i think what we saw of nadal in hamburg was an ATPschedule-fukt, subdued Nadal... doing enough to win the sem and final... animal... perfect run in for the french with a week off after...

I think nadal will be looking pretty herculean after so many easy matches and a few days off...

knowing the score after the match
it was such an interesting thread
at first I was like come on, give some credit to the players esp a clay courter like almagro
but to see afterwards that he could only manage 3 games, its quite a feast really
