Roland Garros: Week 1 in Review

The first week of the 2008 French Open is over already. During the week, we've seen many interesting matches (especially today) and we hope that continues. Just wondering what people's thoughts are on the week. Which matches have you enjoyed? What results have disappointed you? Which players are you happy for? Sad for? Mad at?

Matches I've enjoyed:

Ginepri def. Andreev - Totally unexpected win for Ginepri. This one really impressed me.
Mathieu def. Hernandez - Great comeback win for Mathieu. Initially, I was disgusted with Hernandez's behavior but after watching this match a second time, it was really just crowd getting on his case for nothing. It's interesting that Mathieu is the great French hope this year and he's keeping his head together.
Mathieu def. Schwank - The last set of this match was great. Schwank probably should've taken it to a fifth but Mathieu has just been on a roll.
Stepanek def. Robredo - Total domination from Stepanek. His run here has been very impressive and hopefully it continues with a win over Ferrer. He could really make the semis here
Ljubicic def. Davydenko - Another great comeback win and totally unexpected after that tough match against Prodon. Certainly this was a disappoint result for Davydenko but Ljubicic just played too well and it was great to see. He could make the semis here too.
Robredo def. Coria - I am definitely not happy that Robredo won this. Coria winning a set and being close to a fifth however was very encouraging.
Llodra def. Berdych - It's always good when Berdych loses and Llodra is just playing too well lately. The serve and volley game is still alive!
Almagro def. Murray - I wanted Murray to win but it was a tall order. This was a very good match though.
Odesnik def. Canas - The last set of this match was really interesting. Odesnik was very impressive in the big moments.
Federer def. Ancic - Fed was just on fire today. I'm anxiously awaiting the final now since his draw has really opened up. Hopefully someone can take down Nadal!

Results that have disappointed:

First of all, what is up with players breaking to get back on serve and then not holding serve in the next game late in sets. It seems like no one is able to close out tight sets. Anyway...

Ferrer def. Hewitt - This was probably the saddest I've been all week. I didn't expect much from Hewitt but to see him get so close and collapse at the worst possible time was very painful.
Falla def. Karlovic - It is just pathetic to me that Ivo cannot win a five-setter no matter how close he is to the finish line. He had this one in his pocket more than once.
All 3 of Verdasco's wins - He's choked his way through three matches and none of his opponents were man enough to take advantage of his mind. I'm especially annoyed at Youzhny for blowing that match when he was in total control of it.
Chela def. Isner - When I saw the draw, I thought Isner would take Chela out. And after the first two sets, it seemed like it was going to happen. The loss of the third set was just pitiful.
Schwank def. Moya - This is nothing against Schwank, but how could Moya lose to a guy that could barely move at the end?
Chardy def. Nalbandian - Again, nothing against Chardy but it it frustrating to watch Nalbandian, who has all the potential in the world, continually disappoint and unexplainably blow big leads.
Robredo def. Gicquel - Gicquel's loss of the big lead here was totally unacceptable. End of story!
Benneteau def. Soderling - I leave the room and he's serving for a two set lead. I come back and the match is over with him only winning one more game. Absolutely pathetic!
Monfils def. Melzer - None of the five setters today went my way today. Melzer's total stupidity and lack of effort after the third set was just completely unbelievable.
Gonzalez def. Wawrinka - As well as Gonzo played today, Wawrinka screwed up big time today. Nothing more to say.

:D Players I'm happy for:
Ginepri, Llodra, Schwank
Ljubicic, Mathieu, Lapentti
Stepanek, Kuerten, Reynolds
Federer, Odesnik, Bellucci
Coria, Murray, Almagro

 Players I'm sad for:
Davydenko, Ferrero, Rochus
Hernandez, Santoro
Safin, Lee
Volandri, Gremelmayr
Darcis, Hrbaty

 Players I'm mad at:
Youzhny, Isner, Gicquel
Soderling, Chela, Blake
Melzer, Ventura, Dancevic
Wawrinka, Nalbandian, Spadea
Karlovic, Moya, Tursunov

My thoughts are...

This RG has been another bread convention, and one of the funniest tournaments in recent memory.

This RG ,as this whole clay season, has shaped up to be even odder than the AO , but in a good way if u ask me.

RG has been horrible for me this year. I just couldn't really get into it after Ferrero had to withdraw injured against Daniel, because I've just got this feeling it's quite serious:(

The trend of RG being the worst, most boring GS for the last few years continues.

Lets wait till Sunday's over.
Anyway this week i just have seen two matches in TV.
Ljubo v Davy and Fed v Ancic.

I like the game between Ljubicic and Dav but the result even get better so it's the biggest surprise for the first week till Saturday. I turned off the TV when Fed got the 2nd set against Ancic.

Cant wait longer for the second week though...it's very interesting draw:)

Well it looks like you really get into these matches, because I would find it hard to be happy/sad at/mad at so many players!

Being a Chardy fan, there is no way this RG is disappointing :D

At the same time, I am really disappointed that Roger-Vasselin did not receive a WC, and faltered in qualifying (and will see his ranking collapse as a result of this), and that Flavio could not defend last year's 2R showing.

and that Flavio could not defend last year's 2R showing.

You are sorry for Cipolla , this guy lost to Huta-Galung in the qualies, leading *3-0 in the second set and then losing 6 games in a row to that dutch indoor player, i presume that it can not get lower then that :worship:

As for Chardy and his run, great stuff........

The match i enjoyed the most was probably Coria/Robredo.
I'm extremly disappointed with Carlos, Canas and the rest of the Argentines for that matter, hell i'm pretty much disappointed with everyone.
Couldn't be happier for Ferru.

RG has been quite funny, but we know how it will end.
