Well done Roger, played to good during important parts of the game. Just wanna congradulate Andy also for actually giving Roger a match in a Slam finals, he proved to me and hopefully everyone else (ROger included) that he's improving and can compete and beat the best. Why can't we have these kinds of matches more than these blowouts.

and Roddick too for the great display and effort. He was so close to winning this match... I guess Fed just played the big points better...

What a great match, both guys really fought for it today and could have easily gone either way.
This kills of all talk that Roger can't win when he gets behind, I really thought he was gone a few times in the match and still amazed that he won.

Two terrific slam finals in a row, perhaps a new trend?

Andy played a wonderful match, especially in the first set, I actually reckoned he was going to win in straight sets if he kept being that aggressive without errors. But Roger was just too good at some important points and his ability of saving break points is amazing.

Great job both players. Andy showed so much determination today and I think that even though he lost, he proved to many including me that he has the game to make this a great rivalry. The sheer power of Roddick in the first set and a half was amazing; it was a brilliant display of power. He really didn't let Roger get into the match and really forced Federer to play his best. Well done Andy. Roger, YOU'RE A TWO TIME WIMBLEDON CHAMPION!!!!! Great job gutting out that match against a tough opponent. You deserve it!

They both show they had matured so much within a year.

Impressed with Roger ability to tough it out, like wyvern I certainly thought he was gone at some point.

Also very impressed with Andy's game today, he certainly had improved a lot since last year.

Well done to both players really.

Great performance by both of them, and especially by Federer! I said before in another post that I am more impressed with Federer when he wins when his back is to the wall, and boy he came through big time!!!
Also successfully defending a grand slam title is nothing to sneez at. I believe the last male player to achieve that before today was Guga at the 2001 FO. My esteem for Roger has gone up a few notches.

I think Roddick himself summed it up the best during the presentation ceremony: "I threw the kitchen sink at him but he went to the bathroom and got a tub".

Kudos to both, I am equally impressed with Roddick and his incessant aggression and Federer and his stubborness to just hang in there and win the big points. Really great stuff! For a change the finals at the grand slams are starting to become more competitive as of late- and I hope it stays that way.

With his complete game Roger may start to make a run for greatness. Who is there to stop him? Even at his best, Andy still coulnd't win and only took a set off him.........scary, look out we may have another Sampras on our hands.......maybe, another huge talent may emerge. Andy is not the answer. He's way too one-dimensional. Power, power ,power---that will not beat Fed; now 6-1 vs Andy, and bring on the eigth match.....

Yes, Andy came out aggressive as hell and not only took Rog by surprise but also kept him off-balance that whole set. However the likelihood of Andy keeping that level up the entire match would have been very slim especially if Roger pulled himself together, which he did.

I have never seen Roger lose a 4-0 lead, and I was wondering if he was too overwhelmed, but he managed to pulled it together and surprising, break on his first set point.

When Andy led 4-2 I thought for sure that set was over, but again he fought back and won that set. When I saw him go down 0-40 on his serve I was nervous as hell but I said coming back in that game would prove how mentally tough he was in this match and he held in that game and the next. I wonder if that rattled Andy some, seeing Rog fight of three consecutive break points and more in the next game.

Good camraderie from both. Andy is by far not a favorite of mine but I suppose that's more Gilbert's fault than Andy's. He's looking good with his beard, is even acting more mature, and he's playing better than last year. Today was simply Rog's day, tho.

:retard: did you see the match? yes coming to net, playing slice, hitting topspin etc is so one-dimensional. and pretty funny that you said its not the way to beat Fed seeing as though this was the toughest match Federer got on grass for the past 2 years.

One thing that struck me about the match was that Brad Gilbert did his homework very thoroughly- they way Andy played for pretty much the whole match but especially in the first set is the way to beat Federer- make him hussle, not give him any time, keep him off balance (which is extremely difficult to do at the best of times). And also the way he staved off the 3 breakpoints in the first set Fed had on his serve was really impressive IMO- 3 straight forrays to the net behind 1st AND 2nd serves- from 0-40 to deuce. Explosive stuff!!

Hope to see many more great matches like this one, especially in the finals of slams!

yeah smart-ass I did see it. What I saw was ANOTHER Andy loss to Fed, despite Gilbert's great game plan. Grats Fed!!! :)

Kudos to Andy as well, he is better with his two main weapons, serve and forehand, but he also got much better with his 2 handed backhand passing and his volley (to a lesser extent).
His play in the first set was tremendous, but i think he took so much risks and made so few errors out of it that it wouldn't have been possible to keep it up for a full match, esp. on a 5 sets one. He made an impressive streak of 2nd serve over 200 kph :P

are u nuts?? my six yr old can slice the ball, and he can go to the net as well. THOSE ARE NOT ANDY"S strengths, he had to pressure Fed, go for shots and come to the net. In his regular play during the yr, you wont see him at the net much. It's power, power , power. He is not a very good volleyer and as th ematch progressed you can see how uncomfortable he is up there.,then he re-gresses and tries to beat Fed from the baseline.....well, that ain't going to happen,........hehe

07-04-2004, 05:56 PM
yes I know they aren't andy's strenghts, but its not like all of a sudden he just came to net and sliced in this match. he has been coming to net quite a bit throughout this tournament and is adding a new dimension to his game. his net game is what beat Safin at IW earlier this year

RonE, you're right. Brad is an excellent tactician and strategist. I also like when Andy talks about how Brad simplifies his approach to the game and plays to Andy's strengths rather than throwing a lot of technical jargon at him and messing with his game.

CmonAussie, JCF was magnificent in his USO '03 SF. Can he get his health back on track?

It would great to see Rainer and Rafael make some noise.

I'm concerned about Dah-veed, though. He's got to hit the gym and regain his mental edge. His injuries may be worse than reported, also - wrist, ribs, etc. I don't know how much his injuries are tied to his lack of fitness, either.

As much as I like Marat, he has some serious regrouping to do. Come on Marat! :)

Andy played great today. I thought Rogi was a goner after Andy broke in the 3rd set. Rogi had to change his game plan and hit his shots deeper which he did and I couldn't believe the cuts Andy was hitting on Rogi's serve. Good thing Rogi started to mix it up more after the final rain delay and improved his 1st serve %. I actually thought Rogi was done after blowing that 4-0 lead in the 2nd set. Rogi still didn't look like he broke a sweat. Godly. I just hope Rogi does get a coach soon or at least knows to hit his shots deeper expect for volleys and angle winners. Andy had the time to blast the short balls in the mid court for winners today. I'm so so glad Rogi caught on after the final delay.

I am still in shock about this Match!! Unbelivable match. I cant tell you what was going through my mind when Roger lost a 4-0 lead in the 2nd to 4-4. Then in the 3rd, i really thought all was over for Federer. Down 4-2. Andy was just swinging away and hitting the lines, and Roger didnt look comfortable out there. But then... a rain delay comes to save the day. Had that not happend, i doubt Roger would've pulled off victory. Now during those 1st 2 sets, i cant even tell you what i went through. I was absoulutly shocked, and horrifed. I was so upset and pissed, that i acted like a Roddick or a McEnroe in a sense. But when they came back out, i started to the relax when play resumed. The conditions were sunny, the ball seemed to fly through the air quicker, which suited Roger. His play was most improved. He hit the ball very cleanly, found his forehand, never seemed to be off balance, and started to S&V much more. Even the 1st serves he missed, he was charging after the serve. I felt slightly more nervous in the tiebreak, but as soon as Roger pulled ahead 5-2, i felt that Roger would win. In the fourth set, he showed some flashes of old brilliance, like last years semi. Awesome stuff from Federer. He held to love in the opening game, and pressured Roddick in his oppening game. Federer had so much remined me of Sampras the way he saved those break points. Most were on 2nd serves too. Pure genius!! :worship: That brilliant game at 0-40 was unbeleivable. Gave Roddick some of his own medicine. The game in which he broke was spectacular, beautiful backhand topspin lob winner. You know there was definatly a time when i didnt think Roger was going to win and gave up faith in him. But he showed the heart of a true champion :worship: :D. He fought hard, lots of emotion from Roger in the latter stages of the match. He has demonstrated what it takes to be a true champion-Its not about the matches you win easily, not dropping a set, its about the matches where you have to fight till the end, be courages and gritty, and outwill youre opponent to win. To win when youre not playing youre best. Thats what he did today. Flashes of Borg i'd say the way he came through today. :) :)
CONGRATS ROGER, you are the best!! :worship: :worship: :worship:
And to Andy to for, giving Roger all that he could handle, and fighting till the last point!! Great match, one i will remember.

Fedex,

Couldn't have said it better myself! Also, the fact that he eventually did figure out what he has to do to win and do it, just shows what a brilliant tennis brain he's got- and all that without the benifit of a coach. A real enterpreneur of the game....

I think the delay gave him time although Rogi said to Bud that he had his buddies give him some tips during the delay. What are friends for? Rogi just started hitting his shots deeper to the baseline and serve and volleyed more which threw Andy off. I wish he would have volleyed cross court though so Andy couldn't have the chance to pass him on the backhand.

Wimbledon....he got to the finals and played the match of his life!!!!!! and you say freakin zilch for that. runner up hello!
andy is obviously getting better and dont you dare call me an idiot or a moron cause you see i never said andy was close to federer *you MUST get your eyes checked*. i just said he was improving and getting better in every aspect in his game. not that he was getting closer to roger but he did give roger a ride today all right. roger just happened to get better in the end and won against andy. i give him props for that and he is a great player and something that andy may not get to but at least andy is trying his hardest. calling me a moron/idiot are you? i think you are freddi

ok, whatevr you say. He played great, he's getting much better. Lets step back a second moron, shall we. He won two straight tennis masters series event late summer last yr then crystalized that with the U.S Open title. He looked great, with Gilbert by his side he was ready for greatness, right? First of all, I think you need to learn that when a player improves his game, that doesn't necessarily have to reflect on his accomplishments.

Second of all, he did better at Wimbledon this year, he made it one round further and gave God Fedex a tough fight (as opposed to the drubbing last year). Do you even know what improvement means??? No one said he's as good as Federer now...please go to an optometrist and have your eyes checked out. Or maybe you're seeing things because you are hallucinating.

Yay for Federer! :bounce:

It was a very good match with lots of good points. I though Fed was going down during the 3rd set before the rain came. But he picked up his game and came back. Then in the 4th, I thought this would go to a 5th, but he toughed it out.

Props for Roddick, even though I'm not a fan of his.

He played one heck of a match. He came out playing extremely well, pressuring Fed and not allowing him to play his game. And he kept that high level of play for nearly the whole match. He has improved since last year, mostly in his return game, which made Fed think twice about coming in off the serve.

Oh yeah, losing in the Quarters of a major is a huge disgrace and disappointment.

For the French Open, Andy got farther then last year didn't he? Accomplishment. We all know he pretty much sucks on clay, but at least he is trying to get better on it. :ras: Roger got one round farther then Andy and got SMASHED by Guga.

Oh yeah, he's not close to Roger. They are just #1 and #2 in the world.

i thought he say nay or something. me and my brother (huge roger fan..hates andy though lol unlike me) couldn't figure it out so he said it was probably in a language that he spoke.

He said "nei" for "nein", "no" in swiss-german. (not swedish ;) )

Roger generally mixes up languages on the court:

english: come on
french: allez
swiss german: nei

:)

In other matches I also heard him say something like "gooble" when things weren't going his way. Anybody have any idea what this means? Have I even pronounced it correctly?

Freddi,

As a Federer fan I was ecstatic about Federer repeating his victory- I truly think he's a wonderful player, but I don't think it is fair to treat Roddick with such contempt- he did do really well after all, and he deserves credit for it.
You don't reach no. 2 in the world having won a grand slam and 3 TMS titles by fluke. Give credit where credit is due.

True RonE :)
Their styles of play just cannot be compared that easily. I admit I'm not a real fan of either one, I certainly did enjoy todays match and the differences in style... Like Andy said himself, Federer is like this guy with a lot of touch and he's so gracious on court, while Andy just tries to hit the crap out of the ball. Both styles obviously work out for them (hence the tournament title and number 1 positions).. It was just that today on grass, in Federer's future imaginary backyard, Andy wasn't good enough and/or Roger was too good. Andy came close, just not close enough. Hell knows, if they would meet on hard court this summer, Andy might win it. Both have certainly improved their game and maybe Andy even more visible than Roger. No need to talk down either of these players, cuz they both do a great job and you can't be number 1 or 2 in the world if you are an idiot without talent. Ha.. *big sigh*... had to get that out ;)

Btw, I like all those languages Roger uses on court, didn't even hear all of the things you guys mentioned... I learn something new every day ;)

Btw, I like all those languages Roger uses on court, didn't even hear all of the things you guys mentioned... I learn something new every day ;)

Btw, here are the reasons for the three languages:

English: His mother is South African

Swiss-German: He is born and live in (well close to) Basel

French: When he was young he spent a few years in the Swiss tennis school, which is found in the french speaking part of Switzerland

Here you go ;)

Could be, but he usually says it after he makes a stupid error and the tone with which he says it indicates that he's berating himself

I was really nervous about this match today because I really wanted Roger to defend his title and the minute he was broken in the first set, I immediately knew that it would be a tough road for him to beat Andy.

One thing that really impressed me was the fact that when Roger was down lets say 2-4 in the 3rd set. He still fought his way back into the match. A few years ago he would have easily gone away and let his emotions interrupt him but there was none of that today. The rain delay really helped him, but overall it was a really good match from both of them. I enjoyed it because Federer proved why he is the world's best. He is truly amazing to watch. God blessed him with so much talent and it is all so wonderful for us all to see.

I am just overwhelmed and so proud of Rogi! With all due credit to Andy for a well fought match, I am so proud that Rogi was able to win even when he wasn't playing well (does he have a cold?). But somehow, Rogi was able to dig in and win, like the true champion he is!

Amazing, Rogi! You proved you're the Wimby Champ and the #1 player!! Hats off to you!

Pandy played w so much power in the first set I was getting distraught but you managed to come up w the goods to win it in 4!!

My sleepless nights were well worth it in the end just to see Rogi win it w an ace and to see him cry once again on Centre Ct!

Lovely!!

Now I can catch up on my sleep!

24-match win streak on grass... one better than Sampras... not bad at all!

hope you had fun w Maria and Mirka at the dinner!

How did I miss this thread?

Anyway, the final was good, I mean, it was hard to watch, so, it kinda wasnt good, 'cause it took a toll on me! Andy, played, very nicely. His serve was working for him only sporadically, so I mean, wow, he just played some great points--good volleys, crosscourt shots, returns! Pity it slipped away, but it's all good

as for Rogi, congrats again. He is just, inhuman! lol i mean, he was human for a while, and then he mutated in the 4th set

and the pictures from the ball were hot, I mean, Sharapova was hot--Rogi was lucky to be next to that! Mirca, let's hope she was not too far away!

yeah smart-ass I did see it. What I saw was ANOTHER Andy loss to Fed, despite Gilbert's great game plan. He is ONE-DIMENSIONAL--he tries to beat you by brute force, but Fed shows, talent and grace prevail again and again and again.....oh, Andy thnks for that 'good match', that was great, lol, a great loss in a WImbledon final, lol!!

:)
Grow up they both played well! That match could have gone either way they were both playing fantastic at different times even Roger said Andy deserved it as much as me.
