John McEnroe please shut up

He is constantly up Roddick's ass. Will you just shut up and let us enjoy the match peacefully without him constantly making Roddick seem like a god or something. He is such a :retard: "Magnificent is an understatement", referring to Roddicks serve.

once you win wimbledon or pull off a serve like roddicks, until then, mcenroe can say just about anything he wants, i love his commentary

Too bad, because Roddick didn't win Wimbledon and I could probably beat Roddick with his 1-D game.

I disagree. I thought JMac was incredibly even handed. He likes Fed because he reminds him of Bjorg (one of the few of JMac's contemporaries he got along with) . He likes Roddick because...well, because he has to. :D

John is "a proud American" and therefore in his peanut brain "American" is the best.
I wonder if he is proud of George Bush?

I don't think these posts do this forum a very good service- we're here to talk about tennis, not politiking- there are plenty of other places to do that.

I'm not condoning that either, all I'm saying is these types of discussion leave a sour aftertaste is all.

Commentators do this all the time. About Roger Federer:

"He is God-like"
"Moves like a gazelle"
"Next Pete Sampras"

And there are many more I'm sure.

In general, I find that all commentators over hype and over exaggerate almost everything when it comes to sports. Some "news" organizations do it, too. As I like all tennis players to perform their best on the court and let me see great tennis, this aspect of television coverage really irks me. I also think that beating the audience over the head insults the intelligence of the viewer as if in giving them a more balanced view of all of the players' attributes, fans won't be able to distinguish for themselves who they prefer. John is not the only guilty party. Today, during the NBC Allstate update, the anchor had the audacity to imply that Maria's win over Serena could possibly herald some sort of changing of the guard. I don't know this anchor from a hole in the wall and she obviously has no idea about the current injury ridden state of womens' tennis or the fact that Maria hasn't excelled on other surfaces, yet. Too much hype, too soon.

One thing I really like about John and several ESPN commentators is how they talk about the technical aspects of the game. It was so clear to me that Andy needed to come in on Ancic and whale his FH on Sjeng in order to be successful. When he made those small changes, his victories became easier. Yesterday, I saw that Serena was missing her volleys because her raquet head was wobbling. But, John pointed out that Mario's problem was his balance. His raquet head was strong and steady. I like learning those nuances of the game.

So, when it comes to commentators, I'll take the good with the bad. It's always fun to see them eat their words, i.e. hyping up a match that turns out to be a blow out. ;)

Sharky has definitely been overhyped but she definitely answered the call and raised her game exponentially in the semis and the finals. It was an amazing sight to see what she did to Serena.

However, the media really wants her to be the "Winning Anna". She was on the NBC Nightly News and her picture was on the front page of the Sports section of the New York Times today instead of Federer!

They replayed her image all yesterday on the news briefs, national and local, like she was a threatening storm...and they replayed her final against Serena after the men's final.

Already, in terms of the Russian girls, it was like Anastasia Myskina never won the French Open...

Don't get me wrong, Sharky is beautiful, but she's a jock. What's going to happen when she doesn't play into the media's ploy? I hope she doesn't turn inward like Daniela...

In the meantime, no nightly news for Roger. No front page sports section with complemtary article. Guess he still won't be a star in the US :o (Although the local sportscaster gushed over him. The old guyz luv'm ).

You know im really grateful to McEnroe for what he said regarding his upcoming show.. ie: that he was going to do his best to help elevate tennis in the US by featuring and inviting great players like federer and roddick, and other current tennis greats to his show. (Wouldn't that be interesting?) Its exactly what the US market needs, and Im glad he'll be out there introducing these great personalities to the American public. He's okay in my book for that.

What type of media doesn't hype? It's all about the ratings.

Anyway, Roddick does have a right to be praised on his serve -- no one has beaten his top serve speed yet. That ball just flies by like a blur. I can't imagine what it would be like to be on the other side of the net.

Ya know Papasmurf, I was thinkin' bout that last night. I like some American players (Fish, Dent, Spedea, !!!Todd Martin!!!) but I get tired of Andy Andy Andy all the time. Like in basketball last year, it was LeBron LeBron LeBron and I'm thinkin' "What about Chris Bosh?" I mean, I can take some Andy, but the overwhelming abundance of the kid is bit much to bear.

Anyway, the commentating was best during Wimbledon on ESPN and ESPN2. It was balanced...oh wait, until they played that Federer thing for the 3rd time...but overall it was good.

I don't have too much against J-Mac. He's cool ya. He did a charity thing in my city, which may not seem big to y'all, but I live in Jackson, Mississippi. The Land of No Tennis. I want to catch his show tonight but I'm not gonna be home  Somebody catch it and tell me who was on please :)

When he read the teleprompter (when introducing Andy to the show), he said Andy was the youngest american year end #1. While he was talking to him during the interview, he screwed up and said he's the #1 player in the world. I doubt he really follows tennis and knows everything, so he screwed up a bit. nothing to get freaked out about.

sorry naldo, he did not. Kimmell (sp?) said it three times as he was mentioning andy roddick being one of his guest, that he was the "world ranked # 1".

The media does this sometimes (more often then never). Jimmy didn't lie, nor did he tell the whole truth. The purpose was to sell ANDY, and saying he is the world rank #1 tennis player will grab our attention. Specific dates don't matter because what was said is both true and false, but what Jimmy was saying was absolutely intentional and the best way to pull in the casual fan watching the show. It understandable (sp?) to some, but still unfair to Roger Federer, but Andy's people aren't getting paid to sell RF, so mentioning Andy as the world #2 was out of the question.

I watched the clip of it before I had posted. While Kimmel was introducing him, they showed a clip of him winning the USO and he said Andy was the youngest American to end the year as #1. and I did say that Jimmy fucked up and said that Andy was the #1 player in the world, so I dont know what you're talking about:scratch:

Conan and Kilborn. :o No contest. Kilborn, THINKS he's funny, but he has nothing. Perhaps the fact that Kilborn has models on every show to attract viewers go you interested, Naldo?? ;) . The best thing he has is 5 Questions, besides the models, which is NO wear NEAR, the genius things that Conan comes up with. Carson Daliy sucks as well. :o . Jay is funny, but he annoys me sometimes, and isnt orriginal, Dave is good as well. :)

HAHA It was only one thread and too bad your favorite Jelena cant come up with as good as an excuses as mine for not being able to win a set/or match since April. Since you "seem to know the situation", we were playing with completely dead balls and in the middle of the match, he decided to give me fresh new balls, and I didn't adjust. :bigcry: :bigcry: I'm sooo depressed. He did not screw up, (1) he said it on the preview, (2) introduction to Andy roDICK, (3) When they were conversating and when Andy said he lost in the Wimbledon finals. He didn't use any of it in past tense.

jbone_14 why must you always rbing Jelena into topics? No she doesnt have an excuse, but I doubt you're living the same shit life as she's living, so stop taking jabbs at her, she's fucked up enough as it is. And if you heard correctly during the USO clip they showed of Andy right before he came on stage Jimmy said "he's the youngest American to finish #1" THAT part was correct, but every other time he said Andy was #1 he fucked up. I'm even admitting it, and I have since the first post here, so why is everyone going nuts?

and Fedex, funny-wise, Kilbourne has NOTHING on Conan, but Kilbourne always has the better guests (and no not just because he has models on a lot:p), Conan's guests suck quite a bit, so when its time for the interviews I just watch Craig
