Nole is seeded third and has a Bye in the first round. He will face the winner of Ivan Ljubicic vs Steve Darcis.

After that, he could potentially meet Juan Monaco, Igor Andreev, Hyung-Taik Lee or a qualifier. He is seeded to meet Nalbandian in the quarterfinals, but Almagro and Gonzo also lurk in that quarter.

Nole is in Fed's section of the draw :p

Here's a little article in Serbian just in case someone's interested.

Đoković: Kosi me bolest, a ne strah od poraza
Nedelja, 4. maj 2008. 17:03

Svakako nisam kukavica. Nema nikakve potrebe da se opravdavam i zaista me boli kada čujem priče da predajem kad god gubim važne mečeve. Svakako ne bih bio srećan ako je to reputacija koja me prati", rekao je Đoković.

Srpski teniser je objasnio da se zbog svog imuniteta često razboljeva posle dugih interkontinentalnih letova i promene vremenskih zona i klima.

"Jednostavno sam nešto osetljiviji nego većina mojih kolega i to je sve", rekao je Đoković.

Novak talks about some media's statements that he retired in MC semifinals cause he was scared of defeat and not due to his illness...saying that's not true.
'That's nonsense, I'm not ready, not even now, for such a big tournament.'
'Retiring the way they said, and what they accused me of, would be deceiving tennis fans. I just put my health in front of results. After MC, I went on medical examination, and doctors said I needed one more week of rest for complete recovery. My fans expected a lot from that match vs Federer, but my career is just at the beginning, and there'll be more matches between us...

He denied insinuations that he had problems with dealing with the pressure of important and tough matches.

'I'm a professional sportsman, and I always try to give 100% . I'm not a coward. There's no need to justify myself, and it really hurts me when I hear stories that I give up whenever I'm about to lose important matches. I wouldn't be happy if that was reputation that went along with my name.'

Djokovic explained that because of his immunity, he often gets sick after long intercontinental flights and changing time zones and climate.

'I'm just a bit more sensitive (vulnerable) than most of my colleagues, that's all.'

Wow - sounds like your trip has exceeded expectations in all departments. How did he seem health-wise - apparently he's still on antibiotics and has requested a Wednesday start?

Hi Herdwick :wavey: Well, that's quite a hard one to answer.......... I asked Nole how he was feeling, and he said "a lot better" :) but then I guess he isn't going to tell me anything different is he ? For all he knows, I could be a hidden Press" spy" :tape:  He did look tired and quite pale I thought though :awww: He didn't seem to be having any breathing difficulties after the practice session, but then, practice isn't like a real match and you don't exert yourself so much - so again, it's hard to give an accurate answer to your question I'm afraid. I just hope he will be OK for tomorrow, even though I'll be on my way home by then and won't see the match  He did make me laugh though - he is naturally such a funny guy and very easy to talk to. After commenting on my dress, he said he liked my ear-rings too :o and I just said without thinking, that he could have them if he wanted, but I didn't think they would suit him, and he thought that was really funny - so guess I made him laugh too

And - no - sorry Alex - no photos  I know people think I'm crazy, but I really don't do the whole pictures thing - especially in that kind of situation where I am actually having a conversation with someone  Maybe it's because I'm older, and I feel kind of daft asking for a photo with someone 10-15 years younger! I'd be happier doing it if I had a child with me or something  Just me I guess! Sorry

:haha: Actually a night in with him sounds great for me too ;) But I have my own sweet Serbian guy at home (who has sent me an SMS every day since I got here!), so perhaps I should keep my impure thoughts away from young tennis players and onto someone more my age-group. and a bit closer to home!) So Novak's match is the first one tomorrow. Can someone fill me in on Darcis? I only saw a few matches with him, and I don't remember them all that well..:o

What should we expect? I hope Novak comes out guns blazing :armed: and finishes this in straights. I hate it when he underestimates his opponent, breezes through in 1st set, and than start a drop shot fest in 2nd, followed by lower serve % and higher UE count. I dread his 1st or 2nd round matches, to be honest.

Lee

OK - so I'm home - watched Nole on TV. As others have said - he did what he had to do - not such a great match - I actually expected better from Darcis......... not that I'm complaining - a nice, easy match is what Nole needs for his confidence and fitness.

Seems strange to see Rome on TV when I was on court yesterday  Ah well - such is life - soon Roland Garros :woohoo:

Novak seemed kinda sleepy to me in that 1st set, he wasn't moving that good and missed several eaaaasy shots.

Darcis got to nervous, broke down and handed him the match, so no reason to worry there.

Well, I watched Andreev's first match when I was in Rome on Monday, and I think he definitely could pose a threat. He's a very solid claycourt player who trained in Valencia and moves as well as any Spaniard on clay - so he's not to be underestimated  Having said that, he hasn't had a good season so far, and seems to be lacking a bit in confidence, and gets tense at the big moments, - so I think Nole should beat him, but it will be a much harder match than today. I expect 3 sets

Andreev can be very dangerous if he has an ON day. If he's on, Nole really needs to up his game a lot from today to have a chance vs him.

Herdwick

This is getting silly - who is going to now going hold serve first?

Oh my  Here I am at home on the nicest day of the year in England, and I've just spent the past 3 hours indoors, watching that match and shouting at the screen :help: What a stressful time - I think I would have been better off at work

I am very, VERY pleased and relieved he came through that match - it was a minefield  I thought he played extremely well in patches - but it was the other patches I was worried about  I'm sure he isn't 100% fit :awww:

For those who asked what he was saying to the Umpire, - he was complaining about the state of the court. Seems the court was laid quite late this year because there are building works/renovations going on at the Foro Italico, so there is too much topsoil on the courts, making it very dry and with many uneven bounces. In his interview with Sky afterwards, he said that he knew there was nothing that could be done now, - it was something that should have been addressed prior to the tournament. He also admitted it was the same for all the players.

For all the idiots on GM who talk about him being unsporting, - I loved the part when Andreev's serve was called "out" and he rubbed out the mark and said it was "good", allowing Andreev another 1st serve at a very crucial part of the match. :)

He was really sweet in his interview too - praised Andreev very highly, and he said he felt tired but "not as tired as I have in previous weeks".

And Herdwick - I would love to "very nice" to him too :) He has such a cute smile :hearts:

Thanks so much for the info - however much I moan about the commentators sometimes, it's even more frustrating to be unable to have any sound at all. I was sat here at my desk squeaking throughout - got some very funny looks and had to pretend to cough. Shame I missed the i/v - I always think he comes across so well in them - let's hope Sky show it again tonight as we have been prematurely deprived of the luminous Murray.

I didn't think he looked very fit though and am worried about the Almagro match already.

Me too  I'm not a big Almagro fan - sorry Lee :awww: They asked him about Almagro in the interview - he said he had only played him once before, in some kind of Futures match when they were both Juniors. Almagro won  He said he was a great player, and that clay was his strongest surface, but that he (Nole) felt confident. Guess he has to go into the match saying that though - you don't want to give your opponent extra hope

He knows he needs to seize this opportunity.

I think he might be reacting to a kind of pressure he's not accustomed to. I also believe he's worried about possible rematch with Feds, that last encounter sure was a bitter pill to swallow.

He was (rightfully)criticized heavily after that retirement, and it hasn't left his mind imo.

He needs to prove himself (yet again). But I gotta give him credit, he sure does posses strong will power for a 20 year old. That should get him through tomorrow's ordeal.

I thought that today's horror show was at least in part due to the wind. There was some weird-ass stats in the middle of the 2nd set, like Nole winning 48% on his first serve and 92% on the second. It must have been the wind, or else Igor has some mad returning skillz.

Either way good luck vs. Nico tomorrow.

 Yes - of course! Tickets go on sale online from about January on the tournament website. The final rounds (final and semis) sell out within the first month or so, but you can buy earlier rounds right up until about a month before on Central Court, and even on the day for grounds passes. They won't send them out abroad, but you can pick them up onsite at the Box Office with no problem :) Oh - and to be honest - the empty seats you see are mostly all Hospitality/Sponsors Guests etc  The "real" people sit further back like they do at Roland Garros and Madrid.

I'm sorry for the crowd, but, having said that - they were appaling today (and yesterday with Almagro). Anyone could see Stepanek was unwell - he was almost vomiting on more than one occasion, and he did try to go back out there after the long break, only to almost vomit again. To boo the guy under those circumstances was dreadful - after all, what did they expect him to do? Die on court to give them their moneys worth? Don't like him, but felt sorry for him - he even tried to acknowledge/thank the crowd feeling as ill as he was.

Anyway - so pleased Nole is in the Final, though I'm sure the idiot Rafa/Fed tards on MTF will find some bitter excuses, such as the fact he isn't a "real" winner because of all the retirements against him

Oh - fear not - am taking nothing for granted tomorrow - I have a high respect for Wawrinka's talent. At least Nole's probably used to the crowd being against him now; he needs to turn it to his advantage and feed off it. I do wonder if he's ever going get any crowd support again, apart from the odd few Serbs who've managed tickets. Will be interested to see how they react to him at the USO this year.

Sadly, the higher up the rankings you go, the less support you get from the general public, because it's only human nature to support the underdog, and also to want the longest and best match possible when you've paid money for a ticket

I guess when Nole starts to slip down the rankings (as he inevitably will), he will get the applause, just like Federer is getting now, and people like Sampras and Navratilova did in the past. Hope that is a long time coming though :)

A pretty good post match interview IMO

http://www.internazionalibnlditalia.it/1/PopNews.asp?LNG=EN&IDNews=395

Novak Djokovic after his win over Radek Stepanek in post match press conference

Q. Could you ever imagine getting through the quarters and semis and playing two sets?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: No, honestly, not in an event like this. But these are the circumstances and this is sports. Anything can happen, you know.
I think this is another reason and another showing that the season is really tough, especially this year because of the Olympics.
The players are not getting injured for nothing, you know? There is a big reason why they're having these difficulties. I understand that because I was in that situation many times.
But for me the most important thing is that I have done everything that I planned to do before the matches, last night's match and today's match.
I'm happy with my performances so far, so hopefully tomorrow I can get a big victory.

Q. Did you know beforehand that Radek had a problem?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: No, I didn't know anything about his troubles.

Q. Is it kind of difficult to prepare for a final when you've had short matches? In a strange way, would you have preferred to have played a complete match?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I think my first two matches were okay. I think especially the second one against Andreev was a really long match. I think it helped me in the way that I get used to the court and atmosphere and everything in general, so I was really ready.
I got to the match against Almagro, you know, a little bit tired, but I think I was playing really well. It was good that I didn't have such a long match against him last night, because otherwise we would finish really late in the night, and who knows what will happen today.
You know, these are these things are part of the sport. You just have to deal with them.

Q. (From Italian) Do you think something could have been done in order to prevent this problem by not planning the Olympics or the schedule so tight around the Olympic Games?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, you know, now if we start talking about that I think it will be taking a long time. We are all trying to make this sport more popular and better. We're all working for the good of the sport.
Especially the players in the top and the ones who are playing a lot of the matches are not happy with the schedule this year. That's certainly a task to talk about because of the really tight schedule of the Masters Series events.
We're all aware of the fact that the Olympics are making it even more difficult, but this is something that we will need to talk about in the future. I'm not criticizing anybody, but it's just very important to take care about the players, because you don't want to have these kind of situations at big events, the players retiring in the semifinals and the quarterfinals after one set.
The stadium was not even filled up and suddenly one of the players retired, so I don't think that the tournament director or the crowd or anybody wants to see that.

Q. Do you ever remember in a tournament to have two players not playing against you, or is this the first time, retiring against you?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: No. First time.

Q. Which sort of pressure would be tomorrow on your shoulder, because you are now a big favorite? You can say whatever you want about Wawrinka. Everybody has a lot of respect for him, but without No. 1 and No. 2...
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Sure. No, of course. As the third player of the world you always have a certain does of responsibility and expectations behind your back, especially in these cases, in these matches in the big events when you play players who are lower ranked than you.
It's normal that the people expect. And considering the results recently in last couple of months, I would be certainly the favorite in the final.
Again, I don't want to underestimate anybody. It's finals, and he absolutely deserve to be there. This is the event that all the best players in the world are playing, so saying it again: he deserves to be in the final, and the better will win.
But I feel physically great and mentally as well ready. Hopefully, you know, I can stay at the high level of performance.

Q. (From Italian) We've seen that today Stepanek wasn't well and he retired because of an injury. But on the other hand, he was here with his girlfriend. Do you think the presence of someone close to you be can be an advantage or a disadvantage to you?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: This is something that is differential on every person. You can't say that it's good or bad or advantage or disadvantage, because every person has something else that is suitable to his personality, to his life, to his career, for his job.
So I can't really give an answer to that question. I like to be surrounded with the people that I really care about. I always like to have a lot of people around me, because in that way I feel better. I feel more relax and I feel more support, supportive.
But on the other hand, there are tournaments that I want to be alone. A lot of person has a different opinion.

Q. What's your idea about Federer after your match in Melbourne and he lost so many times in different situations?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, you know, I was saying before, this is absolutely a normal thing, because after so many years of dominance and winning 90% of the major events on the tour, it's normal that in one point of your career you start to play worse a little bit.
But he's still the No. 1 player of the world and he still has the highest possible goals and he still wants to stay there. He still had pretty good results, you know, satisfying results in this year.
Of course, not characteristic for him because everybody expects him to win every single tournament, but players and times are changing. Players started to believe more that they can win against him or any other best player on the world, on the top.
So it's going to be interesting to see in the continuation of the season if he or Rafa or myself are going to be able to remain consistent with the performance, level of performance, with the results.
Because, you know, this year is very packed, the schedule, and the Olympics are there. So it's going to be tiring. It's going to be interesting, I think, for tennis fans to see who is going to finish in the top.

Good luck to Nole in the final. :wavey: If some people in GM complain that Nole won due to retirements well, the same could be said of Stan. Survival of the fittest is what it's about. They are the last two standing therefore they both deserve to be there.

Nole + USO fits like a glove. The crowd loved him last year I don't think it'll be any different this year. He's got the kind of showman personality Americans love, so no worries. USO will end up being Nole's favorite slam methinks. ;)

Absolutely right. And the USO is my favourite slam so if I have to pick another one for him this year that would be it. (Although I keep having sneaky thoughts of Nole beating Rafa in the RG SF, then meeting and beating Fed in the final:devil: That would be just too cruel to Fed who I also like!)

Yeah Nole! 4th Masters shield is very good indeed in the grand scheme of things.

He did well to adjust his game to Stan's in the middle of the 2nd using angles, coming in, not feeding him much pace. As soon as Nole tightened his game, there was only one outcome - Wawa's tactical options are too few to counter that.

Good job on weathering the storm and coming through yet again vs a player with nothing to lose. He knew that he should and must have won that, and responded accordingly. Congrads!

Nole!:woohoo:

Just knew it. I really wasn't worried after that 1st set, he just needed to start running a bit more. It's good these setbacks happen to him from time to time, he should remember to always be on his toes. He tends to sorta step off the gas when things are working well for him, and I believe he still has a lot to learn from Fed in that department - stay on the guy's neck until the very end.

Now I don't speak Italian, but I understand it and it was very nice hearing his speech.

That gripping hug with Gab was priceless.:worship:
