Stats
Date Of Birth: 03/05/1991
Place Of Birth: Perth, WA
Place Of Residence: Melbourne, VIC
Height: 1.93m
Weight: 87kg
Current Junior Ranking: 38
Highest Junior Ranking: 23 (1st January, 2008)

Mark is a right handed, 16 year old originally from Perth, however he enjoyed a brief stint in the Cash-Hopper Tennis Academy in Queensland before permanently relocating to Melbourne. At 193cm, his serve is a huge weapon, as is his forehand, and at only 16 and still developing, these strengths are bound to get even stronger. His junior achievements include winning the 2007 Junior Davis Cup with Bernard Tomic, aswell as winning numerous Junior titles, including 2005 ITF's in France and Belgium, aswell as the 16's Australian Claycourts in 2006. He is currently ranked #38 on the Junior world rankings, making him the secondest highest Australian, after Tomic.

He has recently attempted to break onto the main tour, and is still attempting to win his first maindraw match although his efforts have been promising. In his first attempt, he qualifed for the maindraw in a $15K ITF event in Australia in late October, where he lost in the first round to Marinko Matesevic in two tight sets 7-6 6-3. In 2008, he was awarded a WC into another $15K event in Australia where he drew #1 seed Nathan Healey in the first round, where he lost in another tight two setter 6-4 6-4. His goals for the year include gaining an ATP point/ranking, while still cutting an imposing figure on the junior circuit.

Mark is currently contesting French Open juniors, and just won the first set 7-5 in his first round match against the 11th seed Cedrik-Marcel Stebe of Germany. Hopefully he can close it out in 2 sets and make the second round.

He's been playing junior tournaments on the clay as a lead up and hasn't done well, losing all his clay leadups in the first round - including a loss to Novak Djokovic's brother Marko. He did, however, compete in a Futures event in Great Britain, where he won his first round of qualifying, but lost in the second round. So not really the ideal preparation, but we'll see how he goes.

Up 7-5, and serving first in the second :bounce:

PERILS OF THE WIMBLEDON SPECTATOR
By Damon Wake, PA
Normally a spot of sunburn and the effects of too many strawberries are the
biggest perils facing Wimbledon spectators, but yesterday one woman discovered
that watching tennis can be a dangerous business.
Sitting in the front row of the stands on Court 3 to watch a boys' doubles
match, she was hit full in the face by the first serve of the match, hit by
17-year-old Australian Mark Verryn.
The woman, who has not been named, was taken away for treatment by St John
Ambulance volunteers, and was later spotted recovering by smoking a cigarette.
Mike Gibbons, from St John Ambulance, said the woman was shaken and bruised,
but after an icepack and a rest was well enough to continue watching the
tennis.
"It came as a bit of a shock to her, but it wasn't a big problem from her
point of view," he said.
"Smoking a cigarette wouldn't be a treatment we would recommend, but if she
felt comfortable doing that it shows she was all right."

Why no Verith in the US juniors. After Tomic went out in a screaming heap and our other two lost last night we needed him Thomas and Eastern in there! Bickering at the top end and favourtism by TA is hurting aussie tennis! Come on TA! Make the peace and get all our young players back on track!

Won through the qualifying in Dubai Futures.

Plays an Austrian qualifier in 1R

He won his first round in three sets 6-2 2-6 7-5. He will now gain an ATP ranking point regardless of his next round result. Too bad hes left it this late to gain the point because he will not be able to directly be accepted into either Australian future tournament qualfying draws and will probably have to rely on a wildcard, again.

Plays the number 1 seed tonight, nothing to lose against him Mark should just go for it.

Mark scored the final spot in the AO Wildcard Playoff. :yeah:
Hopefully with a good showing here he could convince TA for a QWC into the Open, or a MDWC if he wins it of course.

He also competed in the 18's Nationals this past week.
Was forced to qualify, and did that easily (the only ATP ranked player in the draw LOL)
Then he went on to reach the SF, where he succumbed to #1 seed Brendan Mckenzie 3-6 7-6(2) 6-2.

Mckenzie said "I felt like I played pretty good considering the conditions, it was raining for most of the match and Mark [Verryth] was playing some great tennis so I just had to hang in there and hopefully play well enough to win,"

This result was probably the thing that secured Mark's berth in the WC Playoff. :D

I don't really see Verryth as being anything more than Guccione, but in fact much less. If he ever makes the top 150, let me know. When I saw him play I was (quite frankly) disappointed. Sure he has had his fair share of injuries. But if you are having injuries now (at 17) what chance do you have in five years time?

Good luck though, seems like a decent person, hope he can do well in the juniors in January

Sorry Scott Hong kong Have to agree with Aussie here.

The fact Mark Veryrth has been spoon fed by TA for 5 or so years now, getting the best of everything available Im wondering with his height and strength being such a bonus why he hasn't done more, yeah great win against Groth but not done much else this year.

I think there is a lot more kids with more raw talent to be tapped into, but again TA are tunnel visioned.

The same as they have been for years......

Have never seen a player that gets so many injuries as Verryth. Agree with ace ventura and oztennis here - big kid, big serve - might translate eventually into a big game (aka gooch) But i hear that he has lots of attitude - a lazy one apparently - having had numerous warnings and being kicked out of ais a couple of times - might be rumours though ...

Mark defeated Groth 76 76. Good win for him. There's still time for him and you would think there is a good chance of him being a late maturer but he can't afford to keep losing in the qualifying of futures like he did at the start of the year even if he did have to face the likes of Parr and Delgado. Has a winnable second round match and hopefully he can make the quarters here.

Mark has spend the last few weeks in the North American continent playing tournaments in Canada, Mexico and the USA. He is playing in a Mexican futures tournament this week where he has won his first round in straight sets, 6-3 6-3. He will most likely play the third seed in the next round which would be a tough one but at least Mark is proving he can do it on his own overseas.

By the way he is only about 3 points away from being ranked inside the top 1000 so I guess he should be able to make it there some time in the not too distant future. The potential with him is massive given his height and strength. Come on Mark show Tennis Australia that you should have gotten some of that funding and not given it all to Bernard.

jmf07
05-06-2010, 03:21 AM
Before this match he had been on a 6 match losing streak, 3 of which occurred in futures qualifying. Good to see him win a match in the main draw even if it was against an easy player but since his QF in Australia earlier this year he has been super disappointing. Would have been nice to see him last week and take on Santiago Gonzalez but it wasn't to be. People who have seen him play still say he has potential and it is just a question of whether or not his game can click and his style does seem to suggest that he will be a bit of a late bloomer but he can't afford to keep losing in the first round of 64 man futures qualifying draws.

Mark bowed out in the second round to a Japanese player. Mark has entered a future tournament on clay in the US the week after next so I suppose he will stay in the US playing futures for a while after next week. I would really like to see him finish the year inside the top 500, he is the 9th highest entrant on the future list in the US future so maybe he will squeeze in and get a seeding there.

Mark is playing in a US Future this week where he recorded a 6-0 4-6 6-3 win over fellow young Aussie Stephen Hoh who received a wildcard due to his college connection with Illinois. Next up for Mark will be Jarmere Jenkins or Johnathon Cooper.

Looks like Mark is making a bit of an impression overseas, this week he was awarded a wildcard into the Mexican challenger in Cancun where he lost in the first round to Haracio Zeballos 6-1 6-3. Next week he'll play in a Mexican future where he will most likely be seeded. He will also play in two more futures in Mexico after next week before returning to Australia for the Aussie summer of ATP tournaments.

Mark seems to be doing fairly well this year but with the exception of this week has not played since August. Hopefully he can string together some wins and move up in the rankings.

After two unsuccessful tournaments Mark has made the final in the Mexican future this week. A win would see him jump to around 530 in the world and ahead of Jason Kubler. He has also entered next weeks future and should be seeded similar to what he was this week. He will then return to Australia for the ATP tournaments then challengers then futures. I guess he just needs to stay consistant and continue to make semifinals and finals where he plays and he will be in the top 300 in no time.

Mark won the final 5-7 6-2 6-0. His second futures title for the year and it would seem he is really started to get the hang of things on the pro tour now. Hoping for a strong result from him this week too, another win would see him close to the top 400 and a few point behind Matt Reid.

Well done Mark. He has withdrawn from this week's Mexican Future which is an indicator he will be playing the WC Playoff. He hasn't been officially confirmed but it would be a huge surprise if he wasn't awarded one of the 8 remaining wildcards.

Mark playing in a Guatemalan 10k future tournament this week. He is seeded sixth and won his first round against the Argentinian Qualifier Julian Busch 63 63. Net up is Matteo Volante who is in here using his protected ranking but has been in woeful form. Hopefully Mark can make the quarters.

How the hell did he not get a QWC for the AO? Why did guys like Saville and Banes get them over him?

Who knows . Saville is going to be a good player. He probably had a case to receive one ahead of Verryth but I don't think Banes did. Verryth is less than a year older than him and is ranked in the 500's whilst Banes is ranked outside the top 1000. The funniest thing though from the wildcards was Ball receiving a MD Wildcard but Feeney beat him in straight sets at the Wildcard Playoff a month earlier and failed to receive a QWC. Not saying Feeney should have got one but why did Ball get a MD WC?
