On the other hand, Nalbandian playing bad is a cakewalk even for the likes of Wawrinka and Almagro, so still a chance for Roger.

I tend to agree with you, but Fed played quite well today (albeit helped by a much favorable matchup). Still Nalbi shoudl clinch it. Polls take a few seconds to appear.

Nalbandian in ridiculous form, and Roger looking halfway decent before the match? It's like the perfect storm for a "How did that result come from the way they've been playing over the last two weeks?" kind of match.

David is never a lock to win any match. He is more than capable of putting in an absolutely lights performance and then a unbelievably lousy one in back to back matches. It's quite amusing that so many idiots on GM over-praise him after his victories and over-criticise him after his defeats.
I'm certainly not going to underestimate or write off a player like Federer as well.
I just hope that David can bring the form he displayed today to the table against Federer tomorrow.

It depends on WHO will be showing up tomorrow. Let's have a look at the possible permutations:

Fit!Dave - Carbunkle!Fed -> Fit!Dave
Fat!Dave - Carbunkle!Fed -> tennis will lose (and Fed too)
Jesus!Fed - Fit!Dave -> hopefully a great match (which Fed will be able to win)
Jesus!Fed - Fat!Dave -> Jesus!Fed

As Jesus!Fed seems to have been Missing in Action since Shanghai 2007... I give Nalby the better chances. :awww:

Bernard Black

Almost guaranteed to be a tight match. I'm tipping Federer to win in 3 though, he's going to be well up for this so I don't expect any lapses in concentration from him. He could really make a strong statement for the rest of the season if he gets the W.

Saying that, I would love to see a Nalbandian-Nadal final. Dave really had Nadal's number towards the latter part of 07, so I'd give him half a chance to really push the clay king if he can get that far.

I was not predicting him losing to Davydenko or Monfils. I actually thought he would win easily today, and he did. Yes he can raise his game when the pressure is on, but how about that he simply is not able to raise his game to the level which is enough to beat Nalby these days...

I desperately hope you are right though.

I usually don't make any comments but after watching this morning his match against Robredo ( who played very well ) I must conclude that It was a long time since I watched this kind of performance in a player, maybe a 100% Federer could match it. If nalby plays like he did today I cannot see federer winning but It'll be a tight match I think.

If history was the predictor of future results, then Roger would have continued to dominate forever.
By the way, Nalbi was whipping Roger's ass at the RG SF a couple of years ago until he got injured. Nalbi made SF of RG twice and final of TMS on clay a couple of times, plus two or three MM titles on clay and undefeated DC record on clay. He's no clay mug.

Nalbi won't choke like Ramon Crapirez Hidalgo, and won't play 5 meters behind the baseline like Gael Mugfils. Roger may win but Nalbi has to be the slight favorite based on matchup and form.

Nalbandian in straights. Seems kind of weird to be predicting against Federer with such conviction but he is not on form, Nalbandian is, it's not a good matchup for Feds at the best of times. All that and the fact that since the AO Federer hasn't really beaten very good players means a win for him would be probably more surprising than a loss in my opinion.

Seriously you think Federer is in great form or what ? Yes , he won that tournament last week but maybe he wouldnt if Donkey didnt retire . How quick some people forget the way Fedex lost to Fish , lost sets to Rochus ( who lost straight sets to David here ) and Gremelmeyer . MAN any other player who was in this tournament would finish Roger if they had 5-1 lead in the 3rd set but NOOOOOO this clown chokes when he just had to keep the ball in play with Federer making huge UEs .

Wrong. The matched started turning when David started feeling the injury. Fed himself said he would have lost if David had been healthy that day  . I'm not saying Nalbi would have won, my point is he was competitive with peak Fed, so on paper he should handle the Fedmug of 2008.

close to everything points to a solid performance by nalbandian. close to everything points to a weak performance by federer. but i'm going with the 2008 parallel universe odds, which means federer wins this one easily.

I am surprised Nalbandian appears such a huge favourite here, first their personal history suggests that it will be a close match, second, Nalbandian is prone to playing crap now and then when not expected. True, current form suggests Nalbandian as the favourite but what matters is the form the players will bring out tomorrow. I will say Federer in 3, even though I believe Nalbandian is the slight favourite.

actually it doesn't. most of their matches have been fairly lopsided, depending on the form of federer and nalbandian. sure, some have been tight encounters, but i expect a rock solid scoreline tomorrow - just don't know who'll take it. ;)

Which matches do you have in mind? They have a big history with matches on all surfaces, so you see examples of all situations. For example, their last two matches on clay were quite close, in Rome Roger won in 3rd set tiebreak, in Paris it was kind of inconclusive due to David's injury and subsequent retirement.

unfortunately we don't get to see masters events on tv over here, so i'm usually stuck with internet tv. and as you know, clay tournaments aren't good to watch due to the contrasts so i chose not to buy the masters events on clay last year. i can't comment on the clay matches you're walking about, sorry. what matches do i have in mind? the indoor masters in paris last year for example or the one in madrid in 06. then the ones where federer seemed to have found the key to nalbandians game and cracked him up like a nut, crushing him consecutively in 05.

This is my favorite matchup. Whoever gets the lead in each set will be a great frontrunner and the other guy will doubt himself and play worse as a result. Ofcourse there will be many turns in the match, where confidence goes to the other player. Often Fed-Nalbandian matches end something like 3/6 6/1 2/6, I think Nalbandian is the favorite but anything can happen.

Oooo, you gotta be kidding me, it's been ages since the odds were against Fed (besides against Rafa on clay).

Fed will destroy Fit/Fat!Dave. He is ready for this one. He will get to the finals of MC at least.

I'd be very surprised if Fed somehow manages to win this.

MTF curse is likely to happen, everyone on Nalbandian means Federer will win.

Federer. After all he leads the head to head 16-0 as in all the supposed eight Nalbandians wins he did beat himself.

Nope, the eight times Fed won were fluke, fat Dave didn't care, his mind was focused on fishing at the time...

I like Nalbi and Fed too. Nalbi is the favorite ( I think ) but I wish that Fed will be the Winner. I want a final Roger/Rafa !

Nalbandian can barely move due his big belly and lives eating during the whole day so he can not enojy the life, where Federer never trains ,is good looking, nice, lovely, classy, multimillinaire,a celebritiy, GOAT and has a beatiful gf and of course his own line of perfumes .

When Nalbandian plays as good as he can, only Roger at his very top form can beat him. And I am talking godfed here, nothing less will beat a fit dave. so if we add those things into the equation, then add the fact that this is clay, Nalby is playing great and Federer is playing the worst tennis since he became the federer we know. this doesn't look good for Roger.

my head says Nalbandian in 2 sets. 6-4 6-3 probably.

Roger can still win, he just needs one of these two things to happen.

1. Nalbandian plays like the good ol Nalbandian we know (fat dave)

2. GodFed, NinjaFed, JesusFed, BackwardsPantsFed, any of those makes a cameo today at least for one set.. and we got ourselves a match. (backwardspants fed being the one who beat Nadal in wimbledon 2007, which wasn't exactly great but he had the heart of a champ in that one, just didn't let go)

at this point I just want the match to be good and for roger to walk way with some dignity cos this one could be VERY, VERY, VEEEEEEEEERY ugly..

Shortly before the match started judging by the MTF predicting skills in the past it should have been Fed in 3, but now it is swinging to Nalby in 3 or Fed in 2.
