ferrero was unlucky to be broken in his 5th service game.

From the moment he lost the first set, we all knew the match was going to end in just a few minutes.

JCF's crazy forehands :O:O

i think he sort of forgot that you can't just expect to hit winner after winner.

At no point did I doubt Rafa would win, but I have to give some major credit to Juanqui. If he played like that (not the bad errors, but the great points) all the time....but I guess that's too much to ask for at this stage of the game. It was good to see some fight in him. And that 146 km/h forehand from Hell....

I always get the sense that, for Rafa, playing friends is the equivalent of Chinese water torture. Win or lose the point, he looks so miserable. Consciously or unconsciously, I think he takes his foot off the gas sometimes.

Ferrer will be very tough. The fact that he presents some match-up problems for Rafa aside, he will certainly be the fresher of the two. With Rafa having played this match and the doubles to come. I'm hoping for a quick out there, so he can rest up for tomorrow.

Nice attempt from Juanqui... but to no avail, of course. Rafa is a monster right now, and I don't see anyone stopping him for the coming months.

damn good match. jcf played great tennis and really battled til the end, but the level of tennis he had to play to win each point off nadal was just ridiculous.

Nadal, still in neutral.

I don't think so. He has started this clay season very well, he is already in good form I think. Yes he has and will play better but he is above what I would call average clay court form for him. Ferrero played well from what I saw of this match and won 5 games. Good fighting but Nadal just too good and by a long way.

I said 6-3 6-2 in the predictions thread. Five games. Never in doubt. ;)

I'm glad that JC played well at least, and full credit to Rafa too:) I wish he didn't just give up in the second set though, a bit more fighting spirit would be very nice. Live scores gave me a heart attack!

Hopefully somebody decides to post a torrent of this match *wink wink nudge nudge*

amazing how accurate Nadals shots are. Almost no UEs. No way Fed/any other can match that om clay (this season). That lob in the secod last game, nice!
How do you win a point against him?? :)

JCF did play well but it was a shame he'd follow a good point or winner with a pretty shocking UE.
Losing 4 and 1 while playing well just shows how much of a beast Rafa is on clay

Jimnik

Greatest clay player of all time, is all one can say.

Nadal won all the long games with loads of deuces. He's just in a different class when it comes to mental strength.

As for the actual match-up, I would much rather have seen JCF try to play Andy Roddick style and just smash every FH he could. It would have worked better than trying to construct points and wait for opportunities. Patience is not a virtue when you're up against Nadal.

Ferrero is a two time Monte Carlo winner he played well. But Nadal is a three time Monte Carlo winner.

Rafa being a wall pretty much sums it up.

I don't think Ferrer will be such a big problem, he has great chance on hardcourts but on clay Nadal is so superior his game is all about clay

Ferrero is a two time Monte Carlo winner he played well. But Nadal is a three time Monte Carlo winner.
Soon to be four time winner and eventually destined to be six or seven time winner.

It kind of reminds me of Sampras playing Becker at Wimbledon all those years ago. Everyone thought two legends of the tournament playing eachother. But one of them became a lot more legendary than the other.

I thought the match was fairly competitive at least in the first set.
Shame about many UEs from JC, but that's often a result of him staying aggressive and going for his shots. At least he made Rafa work to win the set.
The game he broke back Rafa at 2-4 in the first set was great because JC attacked with his FH throughout.
In the end, Rafa was too solid, but I think JC could beat many top players with today's display.
Although the second set was closer than the scoreline suggests, now there was going to be only one winner. After getting broken in the long second game, it looked like JC's belief was gone. He could stay with Rafa in most rallies, but he just couldn't find the way to finish it off most of the time.

Good luck to JC in Barcelona! :yeah:
And Rafa, win the whole thing again or I won't forgive ya!

Nadal was playing great but you could just see it coming that Nadal was gona break at 4-5, Ferrero had the tools to keep playing at that level but not the head :)

Nadal is only gonna lose on clay this year if he either...

a) has a complete off-day
b) wears himself out physically by playing too many tournaments in a row

Ferrero should have played better.

should have, would have, could have, but didn't. Don't you think Rafa didn't allow him to play any better? On a tennis court there are always two players and each plays as good orv as bad as the other lets him/her. JCF wasn't playing against the wall, for you to say he should have played better. What if Rafa didn't allow him to play better.Did that thought ever occur to you?

mdjenders

Ferrero should have played better.

Did you watch this match? JCF played quite well, amazingly well at times, but he just had to work so hard to win each point. The high quality of Ferrero's play just showed how much of a beast Nadal is on clay.

This is why USA doesn't have a chance against Spain in Davis cup. It's a hopeless situation.

Good match. I thought Ferrero played quite well and tactically a good match. Couldn't really ask more from him. It's just too tough to string together points like that time and time again.
