Ancic is a tough first match for Nadal :retard:

I'm still :rolls: about people considering Ancic to be any of a threat to Raf ON F**KIN' CLAY...

Superior, commanding performance in that first set - barely any errors, truly worthy a game to the undisputed King of Clay. Of course, much of it had to do with Mario's main weapon - his serve - being totally OFF, but still.
Raf! :worship: :worship: :worship:

Mario managed to make more out of the match during the second set, but I had not a second of a doubt that Raf would be able to finish it off in two. Good attempt though, Mario.

It's weird for me that Djokovic won a major...but I have to accept it. There's really no disputing (based on quality of tournaments, quality of opponents, etc.) that Nadal has had easily the second best hardcourt season of the year. He's been a top 5 hardcourter for a while now...lack of titles notwithstanding.

cherry2008

I think Nadal is an overachiever on HC. He plays with his amazing claycourt game on HC and he still is the #2 on HC. That is amazing..... That shows he is a monster on clay to achieve so much on HC with that claycourt game of his.. It should not be happening, he shouldn't be #2 on HC with that claycourt game but he is... Weird.

Good effort by Nadal, but half of his points were Ancic's UEs. I don't know where he got this suicidal idea that you need to finish points ASAP  - it doesn't work on clay, and esp. not against Nadal.

post of the thread so far. Totally ridiculous. In the third set, a pissed off Fed was more focussed and increased his level but the Spaniard CHOKED.

There are no claycourters anymore.

Typical claycourt game would only be a bad matchup for Nadal unless it was an incredible player. Anytime two players play a similar game if one is significantly better it is very bad news for the other guy. See matchups such as Youzhny - Federer and how they play out. Typical claycourters would have probably less chance to beat Nadal than top HCers who try to apply their game to clay unless they were of the highest order.

As requested, Commander:

Djokovic, the current World No. 3, said of Nadal's hopes of finally getting to No. 1: "He's probably the best player in history on clay and he's been chasing Federer for a long time, so he's motivated to do that this year. [But] he has a lot of points to defend during the clay swing. I have started this year the way I wanted to by winning the Australian Open and Indian Wells, and hopefully I can continue that form on clay."

lol @ ancic winning 6 points in the first set

nadal off to the start federer could have only dreamed about...

UNFORCED ERRORS
Ancic 30
Nadal 13

That's 6.5 a set! He'd better clean his game up quick or he'll soon be catching the bus for Barcelona.

post of the thread so far. Totally ridiculous. Roger was spraying errors left, right and centre in the second set - his Spanish opponent found confidence and fought back by being patient with Roger not being patient enough. In the third set, a pissed off Fed was more focussed and increased his level but the Spaniard CHOKED.

Ah ok, i thought Federer played his best tennis ever and RRH was the new Borg. Or maybe it was irony. Chose.

I thought Mirka was very pretty around the time Federer first won Wimbledon. Now she looks more as if she were his mother than his lover.

I know! It makes me want to do it SO bad. Just to see what would happen.

There was a guy in the office who was OCD and had everything on his desk just so. The clerical staff would sneak in and move a few things -- just a quarter or half inch -- to see him go ballistic.

If i was playing Nadal - i'd run over and throw those bottles out of the venue

these modern day players need to learn those tricks - Mcenroe and Connors would do that.

I respect her for all she does for Roger... but not her clothing style. I guess she wouldn't appreciate my band tees either.

I'm sure Sod's plan was to extend the match and lose.

And if we are talking about divas, look no further than Roger in that final.

No double bagel? Retire already Rafa. :o

Seriously though, as many have mentioned, Mario was unlucky to draw Rafa so early. He didn't stand a chance at all.

Super Mario I didn't realize that he has also just gotten his law degree at the same time as being on the tour That's amazing. :hatoff:

Well at least he'll have something to fall back on after his career is over

I felt bad for his parents out there today. Tough draw, better luck next time. Cut out the dfs.

Rafa - nice haircut
yeah - clay !

Well, there is not such a thing as "typical claycourt game". Easy example, Guga and Ferrero, Guga would be a bad matchup for Nadal while Ferrero would be a good matchup for him.

I wonder whether he'd go mental if someone went there and put them not in line

Perhaps somebody could strategically throw his racquet so as to smash the water bottles

That doesn't really work. First, none of the top players play in Newport, so you have to scratch that one. Second, not all the top players have the ability to play in all four of the tournaments leading up to Wimbledon because there are two each week. Federer plays only two grass tournaments, and has been a winner of the two he enters  times. Just the lack of everyone being together in the grass tournaments cuts down on the competitive level, imo.

At least some of the spring clay tournaments are masters level tournaments and have good entries in most of the tournaments except *cough* Estoril.

Super Mario put up a little bit of resistance in the 2nd set, but it's a huge transition from anything going against going against Nadal on clay. The first set was over before Mario knew what was going on.

He didn't

so u see that explains it all that why he is not the real no 1. infact that wouldve beenone of the biggest jokes in tennis history if he were to become the world no 1 without winning anything for 11 months or so.

(if he were to become the world no1) one would have asked, he is the world no 1 for what?????
for sucking for major part of the year
for staying trophyless for such a long period.

i guess its not a difficult question to answer, or is it sir???????????????

but yes sir, he is world no 1 for both the above mentioned factors
