Navratilova predicts Henin and Djokovic to win FO 2008 -how good are her predictions?

She likes to blab but given her accomplishments I'd think she has a better tennis brain than Bud Collins. How good have her analyses been in the past? Speaking for myself, I think it's an interesting prediction - I'd think S. Williams and Nadal would be the much more typical prediction.

I wouldn't back Djokovic for the French unless he beat Nadal on clay, or at the very least wins a clay master Series. Until then, she is geting ahead of herself.

Right now it is pretty obvious on past results that Nadal will win comfortably, but anything can happen (he might lose a few more sets)

I think Henin is a pretty safe bet - she loves the clay and is very at home in Roland Garros, whilst Serena is far less comfortable on it.

For the men.......... wel Nadal has got to be the overwhealming favourite to win the title surely. But, having said that, even his run has got to end sometime, and with Roger far from at his best in 2008, who better to end it than Nole

For real, when I hear her talk, I turn volume down, or try to focus hard not to listen to her.

"Hey mister umpire, can you tell that bitch on another side of the net to stop grunting, she is beating the hell out of me just because she grunts so much and I cannot hear the ball hit the racket."

This is what I'd foretell.

One more thing I'd like to add, merely because Martina Navratilova may fit the profile of what one would expect an alpha male to resemble, fails to qualify her as a knowledgable authority in terms of analysis or anything having to do with men's tennis.

It's not because she's a lesbian or "fits the profile of an alpha male" that she's qualified to analyze men's tennis, but because she's won 18 slam singles.

Different strokes for different folks.

The fact remains that Rafael Nadal has been the premier player on clay for the last 3 years, in fact his dominance on clay goes unmatched by any other player on tour, perhaps even more impressive than Roger's streak on grass due to the relatively shortened season.

There is absolutely no evidence that would point toward such not being the case this season, although I would be curious to know whether Martina believes that Djokovic is actually capable of defeating Nadal -- or will need someone else to do the dirty work for him.

Well, actually I was more interested in what people thought not of these specific predictions but her analyses in general. I can understand that she may be quite biased when she discusses the female players, but I have no idea about the quality of her analyses if/when she discusses male players. Although, it definitely sounds like she likes Novak just as Borg likes Nadal, so predictions are probably not too informative.

I haven't seen Navratilova talking too much about the men's game, it is just the case that Bud Collins is so hilariously bad that any decent commentator would be better than him. For me it is too premature to make a case for Djokovic at this point.

But that was a fluke. I mean who thought Fatoli would have beaten the #1 player who had been in 5 straight GS finals. The women's title is solely for Henin or Serena. A final instead of a quarterfinal between this two would be

Oh, and Rafa's winning on the men's side. :yeah:

Exactly Henin is not even playing well, and when her body is semi crippled as it has been this season she's vulnerable even on her favorite surface clay. Just remember she's had an early exit at Roland the year she came down ill with that virus.

We haven't seen either of Novak or Justine on clay to even judge their form on clay. Lets wait and see after Montecarlo is over and perhaps even after Il Foro Italico championships to judge if these predictions are any good or valid, as of now they are too premature and not worth much.

In some cases one would need to wait and see how they play the early rounds at Roland, having good runs at the pre-tuneups does not guarantee success at Roland either.

true Aloimeh, agree...

imv she is biased all right, and she clearly is "fond" of nole, whatever that means. but her no of slams are valid indicator to the extent. i mean, she knows what sort of character you have to be to manage something as wining a gs. so i say it is a good sign. for predictions id wait until they meet prior to RG, if at all, so we can have a look at match-up with nole being "less fatigue hampered" (which looks like the main negative notion of djokovic's game). so who knows?! but generally, novak doesn't have nadals movement on clay. its not a video game, i know, but still...

She's entitled to her predictions, personally I think it's dumb to make them when the clay season is barely underway and the main contenders are only just starting to play - and in the case of the women won't play now until Berlin in 2 weeks time.

After Monte Carlo we'll have a better idea of the state of the main runners and riders but right now it's all a bit of a stab in the dark.

^^ I have come to realize that tennis greats are as biased as us fans when it comes to predictions. If you have followed Borg's statements before the French and Wimbledon in 2007, it was the same. Borg even bandwagoned for Murray and then subsequently Djokovic too at some point. So while I admire Navratilova's accomplishments, I would give her predictions about as much importance and I would give to your opinion or mine or ClayD's for that matter;).

Jaap
04-22-2008, 09:57 PM
For one, given that she has 18 grand slam singles (including a record 9 Wimbledons), 31 grand slam doubles, and 10 grand slam mixed doubles (and got career grand slam for singles, doubles, and mixed doubles), I'd take her opinions as being a bit more relevant than yours. I admit it's premature and biased, but it's ridiculous to dismiss the opinion of someone of this stature just because she's lesbian (for the record, I'm no fan of lesbians - I just don't think that "dyke" point has anything to do with her tennis competence).

If Henin has a really big attachment with the FO, then you never know.

I watched this interview with Federer's mother, and she talked about how important Wimbledon was for Roger, and the special energy and feeling that gives him. It's like returning home. It gives you an extra boost in terms of performance.

And I will imagine no less for Henin.

French Open for men this year...Still early to tell.Since we are yet to see Nadal play on clay. But Nadal and clay season is like walking home for him as well. Martina is a total hater. When she made her perdictions about who would win the FO this year, they also asked her who the best grass court player is currently and she said without hesitation that it should be Justine Henin! And she reluctantly acknowledged that it was Venus Williams because she had won Wimbledon 4 times. I was just dumbfounded that she could even say Justine considering she had never won Wimbledon, yet Venus has won it 4 times and made it to two other finals and Serena has won it twice and made one other final.
