Impressive performance. A lot of people here were predicting a Volandri win.

Pretty good really.

4 and 1 was good. Second set looked easier but the set felt harder somehow than that score looked.

I expected a tight match but Andy was too good today. Well done. :worship:

Never in doubt for people who says he sucks on clay. Tomorrow is Djokovic (or the day after). How did he play?:bounce:

Good result, but what the hell were all those break points in the last game Andy?

Well done :yeah:

He'll get spanked by Nole.

Of course. Nole has been very impressive on the dirt thus far.

:woohoo: :woohoo: Good match from Andy. The 2nd set was a bit crappy and scrappy, but quite high quality from both in the 1st set.

Volandri is a good clay scalp for Murray.

Next round will be a beatdown from Future GOAT, no doubt. But 3rd round is a good result :bounce:

Murray played well today. In fact the first set was pretty good quality from both players. Of course, this doesn't mean he will play well tomorrow. I just hope he plays better than at Miami last year:sobbing:

It will be Thursday. Tomorrow is still 2nd round.

He played well.

I hope he makes the match Thursday competitive. I think it will be close. If Nole wins, it's OK, Andy has much less experience playing atp matches on clay. I think Andy can do it though.

He only played one match. Was he impressive...no, he was average, but it was just his 1st match of the clay court season and the first match of any tournament is always tricky. Anyway, Murray can win of course but I doubt it.

Amazing that Murray hasn't won more matches on clay before this year. =P

Had the "pleasure" of watching some of the first set in the gym...obviously couldn't see the ball very easily (combination of it blending in to the court, and the fact I was a good 15 feet away), but at one stage I was thinking Volandri must be leading...seemed pretty close.

Nice win for Muzza, and these points will come in very handy. :yeah:

Volandri has one of the strangest service actions I have ever seen (reminds me of Lindstedt). Definitely don't recall him serving like that at this point last year...can anyone clarify?

Damn straight!

I thought Murray might struggle today, but nice to see he has quickly found his feet on clay. Hope he can give Djokovic a tough time next up.

Corretja would DEny him.

Novak would more likely deny HIM. Marian Vajda seems to know what he's doing.

as for this match , looked interesting until murray won the first set. 2nd set scenario was inevitable then.

concerning murray's transition to clay : no changes. still does a minimum of 1 dropshot per game on average.

The Volandri first forehand, I mean serve, is famous. He's served that way for some time.

 for Filippo. His expression was a bit weary and downcast today. He has a lot to defend in Rome...

Well done to Murray! :hatoff: I'm still waiting for Andy to really have that breakthrough, which says something, since I'm no longer expecting a breakthrough from Gasquet or Berdych.

Andy is hitting much harder than he used to on clay, so a Djokovic win is not a sure thing, even if Novak has owned their match-up.

But it's crucial for Andy to not fall prey to something that he still did today, even if the scoreline looks easy. He still has a tendency to get too clever on clutch points and immediately after breaking his opponent. It gets him into trouble.

He does seem to have changed his service action since last year a little bit, to me.

He used to serve practically sidearm, yes, but the action seems to me to be much more stilted and jerky than it used to be.

It reminds me of the British player Jo Durie, whose serve became very peculiar and piecemeal because she had bad knee problems and changed the serve motion to take pressure off the knees.

Volandri has had tendonitis tape on one of his knees for years and this year is sporting a blue heat tape around his left knee similar to that black tape Justine Henin was wearing at times last year on her calf.

Amazing that Murray hasn't won more matches on clay before this year. =P

2005: Was playing at Futures level. . .

2006: Had just split with Petchey and was without a coach at the age of 18/19, not surprising he was a bit "all at sea"

2007:
Monte Carlo- injured back playing doubles with Jamie, withdrew before singles
Rome - lost in first round.
Hamburg - got the wrist injury while leading 5-1 in the first round.
Roland Garros - did not play

I think that is the scenario, and so we really have not had much chance to see him on clay.

Nice one Andy, it will be interesting to see how judicious he will be in the use of the dropshot next round against Djokovic.

Plus he had back problems that he used to still get in 2006 due to his growth, that affected him in Rome and Roland Garros that year.

He really has struggled to make it through the clay season without injury since he turned pro.

So far the signs are good in 2008 and at least he's off and running and showing he's not a complete clay court clown.

A bit late, but well done Andy :D Good to see him free of injury on clay and therefore having a chance to really test himself :)
