Why are all the clay specialists in the bottom half of the draw?

This reminds me of the AO where all the HC specialists were in the top half of the draw.

No idea.

And as "hardcourt specialists" make up 85% of the tour I doubt the same argument can be made for the AO. :)

Davydenko's quarter is a nightmare. This could probably have been integrated into the Draw thread.

I feel some pity for the 15% that can't be included with hc specialists like Troicki, Serra, Simon, PHM, and Nieminen.

Its quite funny that except Nadal the top 5 claycourters are not specialists at all (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Nalbandian, Davydenko).

I cant even remember the last time a claycourt specialist took a set from Nadal on clay, I think Gaudio did that in montecarlo 2006.

are there really any claycourt specialists left in the game at the top end?

I mean, Rafa is obviously not. I'd say the same with Ferrer. So, anyone?

Maybe Ferrer but Almagro is very weak and seem to only perform in mm clay tournaments. We will have to wait and see how Djokovic performs this clay season, if he has improved as much from last year as on hardcourt he could potentialy even be 2nd only to Nadal on clay.

Let us wait and see who will win the battle to be 2nd best between him and Federer in the MC semifinal. That is if they both get there ofcourse.

probably Volandri in Davis Cup. Autumn 2006 some time.

don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that Djokovic could emerge as the number 2 on clay by the end of the year either. I hope not to be honest but it's certainly possible.

I think the only question I have in my mind is what a fit Nalbandian can do to Nadal on clay. Other than that I really dont think the draw matters that much for Nadal anyway.

Nadal beat Nalby in a practise match the other day

ARGH! The other things that might harm Rafa is his insistence in playing doubles. he and Tommy R just beat Nestor and Zimonjic

I think the winner of Monte Carlo will come from the bottom half of the draw. All the claycourt specialists are here: Nadal, Ferrer, Davydenko, Andreev. In the top half you have HC specialists: Federer, Djokovic, Nalbandian and Gasquet.

Do you guys think Nadal/Federer prefers playing Nalbandian in qf than Ferrer who is more of a claycourt specialist?

Nalbandian is a bad matchup for Federer. But then Nalby has to play Nole.... And Nole is looking good...

Fully agree. Those 'clay court specialists' in the bottom half of the draw would be TOAST against Nalby, Djoko and Fed (in good form, not now), even if the latter players are so-called HC specialists (which they ARE NOT).

Again we're talking about now not the history of fucken Monte Carlo.

You don't understand the term clay court specialist do you?

Nadal is the best on clay but he is an all court player and so is Federer.

Today there are no clay court specialists anymore. There are players who prefer clay but they are not specialists.

Spot on. The only player one can still call a 'specialist' might be Roddick, who really *sucks* on clay. ;)

Looking at the last 10 years or so winners of Monte Carlo. Kuerten, Ferrero and Nadal are all court players who excel on clay. Maybe they are not great on grass but they excelled on all the other surfaces.

Maybe Coria is really the last true clay court specialist.

Maybe the wrong term, all surface player.

He reached the final of Wimbledon twice and has done well on hardcourts.

I know what you mean, its hard for me to see him as anything besides the King of Clay but the boy can play on any surface.

I don't agree with the claim that there are no more clay court specialist, there are tons of them. Just as there are tons of hardcourt specialist.

Nadal is a baseliner who has an all court game, but he's most certainly a clay court specialist. Although he specializes on clay that shouldn't imply that he can't hold his own on other surfaces because obviously he can. He's a claycourt specialist who can play on all surfaces, but his specialty is clay- make no mistakes!

If anything Roddick & Blake are hard-court specialists who absolutely suck ass on clay. Nadal has won 3 hard-court MS shields, Roddick/Blake have 0 clay-court MS shields.
