#`@@`#...Am i the only one who finds it amusing how Djokovic always talks about himself in the 3rd person & his trademark line: "...being the 3rd player of the World and winning a Grand Slam the sensational and charismatic Serbian obviously expects mroe...etc."

**
So when Novak becomes #2 no doubt he`ll say "...being the 2nd player of the World..."
The next progression of course is for Djoko to "...being the 1st player of the World..."

<>I`m surprised no one has every told Novak that this pecular expression he likes to use doesn`t quite convey what he wants to say. I guess everyone`s too impressed with his aura to correct him:confused:

"being the 3rd player of the World"~~could be interpreted as `the 3rd greatest ever` or the `3rd player to ever pick up the game`!!

It's the way he says it in English, I think everyone is more than capable of understanding it, I don't see what the issue is? no one corrects some of the Spaniards when they say "pression" or one of the other adorable things they say....also, Novak doesn't just say it when he's talking about himself, he says it when he talks about other people too, he'll say "he's one of the best players of the world" or whatever.

I never noticed that before- is it possible that maybe he's not aware of it? People tend to have a "set list" of things that they'll say in interviews and pressers.

Like a catchphrase, perhaps. I'll listen more closely next time around, and see if I can hear what you mean, Aussie. :)

And anyway there are still native English speakers who don't know how to use adverbs. I feel like punching one of the fuckers every time I hear "I played good today" or something. That's a far more pressing issue.

For a non-native English speaker, I think he speaks excellent English, even colloquially at times. He also doesn't have the 100%stereotypical Slavic accent - sometimes his pronunciation has a little bit of German or French influence so it sounds better.

It's not just you.

I find it amusing too. So amusing that it destroyed my life.

I used to be a regular tennis fan, but one day I heard a Djokovic interview where he used this sort of sentence construction and before I knew it, I was on the floor of my lounge, rolling around in uncontrollable, hysterical fits of laughter. Eventually it subsided after about 2 hours and I passed it off as a weird one-off and never thought about it for a while.

Then a few months later I saw him do this again in another interview and he did it twice. I lost all control.

I lay on that floor for 2 days, screaming with laughter. I couldn't sleep, eat, or do anything but lie there and laugh, no matter how tired I felt. Eventually my friend found me and called an ambulance, and he saved my life. I could literally have laughed myself to death.

They rushed me to the hospital, where in the end, they had to strap me to a bed and inject me with tranquilising drugs.

It happened 3 more times just the same. I couldn't stop watching his interviews, but if I did, and he used an unusual grammatical construction, I'd fall to the floor in hysterics and have to be rescued again.

It ruined my life. I lost my job, my family disowned me. Even my mum's pet dog wouldn't come near me except to try and piss against my leg.

I spent a long time in recovery and started to put the pieces of my life back together.

It hasn't been easy. Every day is a struggle. I know I must keep clear of Djokovic interviews if I want to retain my sanity. Even reading the transcript of what he says in this thread has forced me to choke back the giggles. And the temptation is so strong to fire up an interview and let the good times roll again. But I've worked so hard, and come so far back from the abyss, so I won't.

I beg of you, don't let what's happened to me happen to you. Just say no to Djokes.

True. His english is quite good considering that it's not his mother tongue.

I also make a lot of mistakes and most of the times I dont even notice them, and what I say or write sounds correct to me.

Compare his english to some other players' (whose names I wont mention) and you will realize how good his language skills are.

You might find this funny.

Peter Bodo talks about how the players measure up in the press room: (http://tennisworld.typepad.com/tennisworld/2008/04/comparation-mia.html)

"Roger Federer's pressers are crisp, on-target and professional. Occasionally there are moments of levity, but on the whole they're like a meeting of the UN World Council on Reducing Erosion in Riparian Corridors.

In his interviews, Novak Djokovic tends to make speeches instead of engaging in conversations; of all the top guys, he's the one in gravest danger of referring to himself in the third person. (When I asked him in Indian Wells what luxuries he'd allowed himself now that his material well being was secure, he very sternly warned me that this was a "private" matter. I'm fond of Novak, but if that's his idea of something "private", there's something lacking in that boy's life.)

And Andy Roddick pressers can be like certain late-night conversations in a bar; you never know if you're going to share a laugh with the guy - or end up rolling around in the sawdust, fists flying.

By contrast, Rafael Nadal's appearances are a press room happy hour, sans booze (these tournament promoters aren't entirely nuts). Feel bored? Cranky? Uninsipired? Get on over to the interview room, Rafa's coming in! The guy turns the room into his kitchen, hops up on the counter, and you talk. It's a warm, enjoyable experience and that means something. Even when he takes exception to an ill-conceived question or comment (Rafa, don't you ever get tired of being stuck at No. 2?), Nadal expresses his annoyance or displeasure without malice - a slightly pained expression the only clue that he's discomfited."

I'm unprepared.

In future, if I could see the schedule in advance...?

Just pull out all the old chestnuts, you know, that everyone in a country of 300 million plus people all think and act EXACTLY the same way, how we are all war mongering idiots like the President, and whatever else you can dig up. Originality is never the point, just the gang mentality, 'oh let me join in too' bashing.

This would seem a bit off-topic but I gotta say, for all his on-court bluster and bravado (which can be a good thing for some, or off-putting for others, depending on preferences), Nadal in press conferences is just one word --- likeable.

I mean this guy's neologisms are just hilarious! ie. when he was praising Federer as a player with great skills and "sportivity" in Roland Garros 2005. I guess he meant sportsmanship. And "pression" and "comparation" are just killers. That's really cute.

for instance when Djoko goes on American talk shows [eg. Leno] you can tell that 80% of the audience doesn`t even know Serbia is in Europe:eek:

I'm sure most of them would know if someone reminded them that Serbia was part of Yugoslavia

2002 FIBA World Basketball Championship For Men
*Yugoslavia delivered the knockout blow to USA Basketball.

In an intense battle that wasn't expected until the gold medal game, Yugoslavia battled back from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat the United States 81-78 on Thursday. The loss kicks Team USA out of medal contention.

*INDIANAPOLIS -- Peja Stojakovic, Dejan Bodiroga, Vlade Divac and the team from Yugoslavia linked their arms and raised them in unison, then danced in a circle around the championship trophy.

Thousands of their supporters loudly chanted "Serbia!" and sang their national anthem.
The heartland of America felt a lot like downtown Belgrade after Yugoslavia beat Argentina 84-77 in overtime for the gold medal Sunday in the World Championships.

Serbia and Montenegro, under the name FR Yugoslavia won 2 world gold medals (1998, 2002)

;) :p

This could be interpreted as a philosophical question... :awww:

But, basically, they were arguing over an irrelevant piece of grammar :) from what I understand, if you're a native Serbian speaker and you directly translate into English, there is no difference between saying you're the 'third (ranked) player in the world' or 'third (ranked) player of the world.'

EDIT: whereas, in English, the phrase 'third player of the world' is rarely heard  and hence some people found it odd.
