Struggling in the first set against Lalo on clay? Second was better (if you don't mention that choke at *5-2 when serving for the match), but overall I wasn't impressed at all. He is going to lose against Pipo if he doesn't change his tactics. I wonder is he even listening Coretja at all ?

Beast beat Beauty huh? I wonder, is it possible to support a player without actually liking them? Cos that's how I feel about dear old Andy. If he doesn't lose to Volandri next round Djokovic will cut him down to size.

The second set was a lot better, choke aside. We'll see how he gets on next time out.

I disagree I thought it was a good first match on clay for him. Nothing spectacular but solid stuff.

He needs to be more agressive on the
1st serve return though. The guy was almost in the stands to return some of those.

at the end of that first set I saw murray go for 6 drop shots in like 3 games, he lost all of them... needs to stop doing that...
Played ok I thought...

Thinking the same. Why was he 10 meters behind baseline on 1st serve ? He couldn't even reach the net in those 1 st serve ROS a numerous times. Was that something that Alex sugested? With Pippo's "drop shot" serve he won't be able even to get to the ball in time.

I thought it was solid for Murray given that clay is by far his weakest surface and he barely has any ATP level clay wins at all. Good job he can build on this.

Yeah but why do you assume he will receive at the same spot against that serve?

If you didn't notice, Lopez has one of stronger and nastier serves on the tour. I bet he's gonna come much closer to the baseline vs. Pippo.

I don't assume, it will be suicide if he does that and thats what i said. And Lopez is not that good server on clay , and his first ones are flat and doesn't bounce high so you don't need to go that far behind baseline, most of the times Andy was leaning forward to reach them.

Yeah, his brother seems to be a great guy. Always smiling, which is nice. Shame he's not a good singles player.

For the record, I don't 'hate' Murray. I don't hate anyone. I don't like his on court persona, that's all. He's not my kind of player. Though I support him because he's British (unless he's playing one of the players in my sig ;) )

Been a long time since Andy won a match on clay.

Don't think he won one last year so it will be close to 2 years since his last win.

I thought he played reasonably well for a first outing on clay. Some things looked to be working well, other areas need to sharpen up, but he got it done in straight sets and that is good news. I thought Lopez played pretty well in the first set but his head dropped through most of the second.

Now he has had some time with the clay under his feet in a match situation, hopefully next match he will feel a little sharper and play a little better.

A solid, if largely unspectacular effort, but good enough to do it in 2.

Good, solid start to Murray's clay campaign. Volandri will be a much sterner test though, so we'll really get to see where his game is at on clay.

Not quite sure what he's done to offend my fellow brits responding to this thread. Chill out guys.

This is a fun tribute to Muzza - celebrating his first clay win of the season by being as foulmouthed and ill-natured as possible. I like it.

Well I know Feli would lose, but he did a hell of a lot better than I thought he would. He may be a Spaniard, but clay is certainly not his surface (last year's Stuttgart SF and 2006's Gstaad Final notwithstanding). Another tough first round draw, but last year his ranking wasn't anywhere near high enough to even get into this event.

Andy is a cock on court but a nice lad off court.

It's a question of how you like your cocks.

Well, this was a match he was expected to win, so at least he got the job done without much drama. :yeah:

Could really do with a R3 result in his mandatories, so a win over Volandri would be cool. He needs to remember how he was playing against Volandri last year, and bring the same game plan onto court...none of this overly passive crap.

Andy speaks rubbish.

It might be a more favourable surface for his game (even that is open to dispute) but with there being so many solid dirtballers out there, I'm not convinced he will ever be one of the stronger front-runners. Would love for him to prove me wrong though.

He did back in 2006 but he's said since then he plays best and is happiest on hardcourts.

Still, he had success prior to 2006 on clay albeit at lower levels and there's nothing in his game that suggests he can't play well on clay now as well. It's just unfortunate that in both his 2006 and 2007 seasons on the dirt he was marred by injuries of one kind or another and a bit of tactical uncertainty when he wasn't injured.

All the signs in 2008 are that he has taken steps to correct all these things.

Well done Andy :DStruggling in the first set against Lalo on clay? :eek:I'm not so shocked ;) I wonder is he even listening Corretja at all ? I'm sure he is. Nothing about today's result would make me think otherwise. It's just the start of their working together and if he does lose to Volandri it won't mean it's not working either. I don't think he has anything to lose on clay this year as he has nothing much to defend and can just go for it.

I expected kinda easier win so this one confused me a litle bit, but then again it is his first match on clay so it might be adaptation issue after all.
