Great comeback for the local lad and this will mean a lot to Ferrer, this is where he spends a lot of time.

Ferrer coming back from 2 breaks down in the 3rd set, he just keep fighting and good for him.

Mucho had this on his racquet, but got tight and couldn't put away the warrior.

Yes! The right Spaniard won! Now Almagro can stay bitter and keep that chip on his shoulder firmly in place.

Almagro was *5-2 up in the third I think.

He led a double break and served for the match at 5-2 having not faced a single break point in the 3rd set up until that point. He served for it again at 5-4 and had 15-30 on Ferrer's serve at 5-5.

Ferrer is the 4th "match point saved winner" this year (after Gonzalez, Querrey and Davydenko). He has won for the 2nd time a tournament saving MP on the route (previously in Stuttgart 2006).

Pics = amazing fighter :yeah:

What a fighter this Ferru. Totally took me over

I was about to write about Stuttgart situation, but Voo beat me to it

I completely agree that Ferru is the best fighter in the sport, now that Mantilla has retired.
It's funny to see El Cabezón's 17 match winning streak at this event ending in the final ever match to be played on clay there.
He was royally pissed off in the tiebreak.

Nope, not what I meant at all. But the statement still stands. Any Spaniard who defeats Almagro is the "right" Spaniard in my book. That reminds me, I need to change my sig...

I'm absolutely delighted to see Ferru winning his home title. This is the 7th title of his career, and undoubtedly the most important one of the lot so far.
A proud day in his career that's for sure.

Mucho, managed to get a few laughs from the crowd at his speech. It looks like this will be last edition of Valencia as a clay event and a very fitting winner.

TMJordan
04-20-2008, 03:53 PM
Oh man.

Hoestly I was worried about Mugro closing this out, no doubt he is the better claycourter as he showed, but got tight and Ferrer is just too much of a fighter.

In the 6 years that there has been a claycourt event at Valencia, it is very fitting that both the first edition in 2003 and last edition this season have been won by local players in Juanqui and Ferru.

As one of the few fans of Nico here- I was not too keen on him losing the match this way. I thought that he had done well to start the third set well after playing somewhat badly at the end of the second set. And then...couldn't put it away. I hope he starts to show what he can do in the clay Masters etc and the way he lost this is not a sign of the same old same old for the big clay tournies. He did not look happy during the trophy ceremony- but then seemed to be in pretty good spirits in his speech. (I think he mentioned that he had to thank his parents because it is dangerous not too...) I can't help it- I like the guy. He is a stinker and seems to own up to it.

Conversely- I am very happy for Ferru. What a fight. :worship: Nice to see again finally- and he seemed very happy with the win. I am very glad that he has a title after a pretty shakey 2008 so far. I hope this gives him confidence for the upcoming months.

Great win for Ferrer against the in-form Almagro. This was always going to be close, but Ferrer's extra experience made the difference. This should give him confidence for a good clay run.

Congrats to Ferru on a great win. Just shows what you can achieve if you fight till the end & what a fighter he is. I for one, am very proud of him and the way he won. Let's hope it spurs him on for the Masters Series Clay Court events.

Having saved two match points in his quarterfinal victory over Fernando Verdasco, Ferrer becomes the fifth player this year to win an ATP title having saved match points during the tournament; he joins Nikolay Davydenko (Miami), Sam Querrey (Las Vegas), Kei Nishikori (Delray Beach) and Fernando Gonzalez (Vina del Mar).
