The draw just came out, Roger has a relatively easy first round, after that he should face Verdasco and then he could potentially have to play Nalby in the QF followed by Djoko in the semis :o

Federer shouldn't have trouble with Simon. In round 3 (first round is a bye) he could face Karlovic, Grosjean, Verdasco or Monfils. All good players, but also all players that Roger HAS to beat.

The quarterfinal against Nalbandian looks tough, but Nalbandian could potentially lose to Robredo or Haas - two players that Roger ought to beat.

Semifinal against Djokovic will also be tough, but he could also go out to the likes of Murray or Moya. Not likely though. Generally, I still like Rogers chances against Djokovic on clay, IF he is fit and confident. And that's the big question, really.

Nadal will win the title anyway, but I'd be very happy with a final appearance from Roger. Even a semifinal will be OK. Anything less will be disappointing.

Should be an exciting tournament!

Not a great draw, but the first few rounds aren't difficult and that's more important. If Roger want the French and wants to get back to his winning ways, he needs to remind Nalby and Djoko (or Murray, whoever comes) who is boss.

I'll worry about the final when we get there.

@Bennymaths, well Super Mario is a difficult 2nd round opponent, Ok maybe not for Nadal. Ferrer is relative hard for quarters too.

Good attitude! He is still Federer the draw doesn't make him lose (before the final), it's mostly his form.

I think it's a relatively fair draw for both Raf and Roger.

Nalbandian a problem? Don't see it. He hasn't matched his Madrid-level for months and I don't see him do it now.

Roger should be able to make the semis here - and hopefully knock the S**T out of Djoko, but I'm not counting on that to happen. Keeping my fingers crossed of course.

Raf is a lock-in for the final, unless something really unexpected happens - Almagro, perhaps? Have to laugh at people thinking Ancic can pose any threat to him... :cough:

From the quarterfinals on, the draw could be tough for Federer but hopefully the matches in Estoril have given him some needed match practice and he'll have a better idea of what he has to work on for the remainder of the clay season.

My thoughts exactly. And hopefully he'll have something left in the tank - there are only a few days for him to recover from the Estoril final (yes, I do count on Roger to make that final here!)...
We'll just have to wait and see. Right now I'm quite optimistic, and I've lowered my expectations - he doesn't need to reach the final in MC, as long as he doesn't drop too many points I'll be okay with that.

This is the type of draw he'll probably get at RG. He'll basically have to play 3 finals to win it i.e. against Fat Dave, Djoker, and Nadal. Early rounds look good though.

A good win against Denko tomorrow could change everything though.

To beat Denko, one of two things have to happen:

--Fed completely ups his level and plays like past years -OR-
--Denko completely chokes.

I don't see Fed winning more than 5 or 6 games with his current state of groundstrokes, return of serve, power, movement, big zit, etc. etc.

Best that Roger gets the tough draw as early as MC for him to know just where his clay game is at -- should give him enough time to tweak before RG.

Verdasco, Grosjean, Nalbandian and Djokovic are all capable of upsetting Roger just as he is equally capable of taking them out. For the duration of the clay season, only one name can be pencilled in for the final and that is Nadal.

I know they don't even bother with the draws, and even if Nadal got "potential" strong opponents there's no such thing as a strong opponent for Rafael on Clay.

True.

MC plays closest to RG, correct? Would rain then make it play like Hamburg, i.e., slow but low-bouncing? If so, I wouldn't mind some 'heavenly' assistance for Roger in that regard so he can at least duplicate last year's runner-up finish and thereby not lose any more points.

How many points will Roger get for making Estoril F (or winning it). Might that make up the points lost if he goes out earlier than the F in MC?

Estoril awards 120 and 175 points, respectively, to the runner-up and winner. For MC, Roger's defending 350 points.

Thus, if my reckoning is correct --

1) If he gets 120 at Estoril, he has to earn at least 230 points so as not to be in deficit. A SF finish (225) at MC would set him back by 5, which means he has to gun for no less than a final spot again to gain some breathing room.

2) A win in Estoril would be the better scenario and can afford him a SF finish (225) at MC while gaining him some points, too.

Isn't he like an ATP version of what's her name the little pusher on the wta, she's really fit and quick but can't generate much pace at all, the tiny spaniard what's her name. Even Hingis looked like a power hitter when they faced each other. :o (Medina Garrigues, I just looked her name up) He might bother Federer if he's having trouble finding his range and rhythm initially which seems to be the case for all his first round now a days.

He'l push the ball around and retrieve a lot but I don't think he should really impose himself on this match, I think this match is more about what Federer does or fails to do.

There has to be something up with Roger other than mono. Perhaps something psychological, something we don't know about. Think about it, that's a lot of years to be playing tennis and a lot of years to be dominating. Maybe this dip is just a result of the numerous heavy stresses combined with mono, its after-effects, and the loss of confidence from other recent losses. He really isn't God

When he was down 4-0 or was it 5-1 I thought for sure it would be over. I think deep down he cares much more than his outward appearances show. And today he was able to summon something inside of him and crawl his way back to victory. So I do give him props for the "warrior" moment even if it was against the likes of RRH.

ATP Tour - Federer anticipates return to form
Eurosport - Wed, 23 Apr 10:51:00 2008

A poor start to the tennis season due to glandular fever would not distract Roger Federer from trying to achieve the remainder of his goals for the year, the world number one said.

Federer, who was effected by the condition earlier this year, failed to retain his Australian Open title in January and came away empty-handed from Masters Series events in Indian Wells and Miami.

He won his first title of the year last week at the Estoril Open and is in Monaco for the Monte Carlo Masters this week.

"Some people don't understand how extraordinary the last four years have been," Federer, who has been number one since 2004, told La Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview on Wednesday.

"I can't be finished in February when I had won the Masters Cup in November. Now I'm well.

"I had glandular fever at the start of the year but I wanted to play anyway because I have lots of goals and they are all important.

"Winning my first Roland Garros, my sixth Wimbledon title, the Olympics and beating Pete Sampras's record of 14 grand slams," he added of his goals for the rest of the year.

If you go by what Roger said after the match, let's hope Monfils won't make Roger "fake out".

(Apparently Fed said something like "Hidalgo played so bad in the 1st, he faked me out"; I assume he meant Hidalgo created a "I'm going to win this match anyway" feeling in him.)

I thought he was only doing it in practice (as seen from photos) but from Estoril highlights and now at MC, Federer is standing too far back from the baseline. This has me confused. I thought the reason why he found returning to be hard on clay was because he preferred the ball to be coming at him much quicker so why that positioning?

Well faster ball doesn't equate to taking the ball on the rise. Fed has never taken the ball on the rise like Blake or Davy but he doesn't stray too far from the baseline either.

I may have to look closely at his positioning when I watch the tape today but if what you are saying is true, I would be disappointed.

I hate when Rogi wins the first set easily and either finally wins but w great difficulty, as today, or worse, loses the match altogether... I am still concerned about his health... I haven't seen his match but I can't help thinking that the mono still hasn't quite left him. It seems as tho he had one or two half-decent days followed by horrible ones... must be lingering after-effects... or he's just getting old... poor thing! :sobbing:

ALLEZ, ROGI, vs. La Monf!

it just gets tougher and tougher... altho today's epic win is indicative of what Rogi has to do to win, esp on clay... he has to suffer [like TFA said, altho I never see TFA suffering on clay... he certainly didn't today; it was poor Mario who had pain inflicted upon him w whippy Vamos topspin mania]

TFA, it's yours to lose... the entire clay season... difficult draw, indeed...

I hate to use the word that starts with "M" but the lingering effects of what that word means is fluctuation in energy levels through the course of several weeks to months to even years apparently. That seems to be consistent with what Roger is experiencing so who knows?

RogiFan88
04-23-2008, 10:00 PM
yeah, who knows? in any case, tomorrow's match will be full of noisy Monfils fans so sth else for Rogi to battle, besides his opponent and himself...

can someone give me a summary of today's match? how did he win the first set so easily? how did he lose the 2nd set and why did he go down 1-5 in the 3rd and how did he manage to hang in [which is a good thing... Rogi now needs to grind and fight and win "ugly" from now on, esp on clay]?

I hate to use the word that starts with "M" but the lingering effects of what that word means is fluctuation in energy levels through the course of several weeks to months to even years apparently. That seems to be consistent with what Roger is experiencing so who knows?

Exactly. Moreover, those energy levels can even fluctuate day-by-day.
It's entirely consistent with a post-viral syndrome. That's why I don't get it that still so many people seem to think it's an excuse, or even worse, a rightout lie.

Well, it's a known fact that very often people have to experience nastiness like this themselves before they should make any judgement at all.

yep, so many people cannot put themselves in other people's shoes... just too self-centred all the time... gets so boring... no compassion, no sympathy, no consideration for others...

it must be so frustrating for Rogi tho, when he was looking forward to a great 2008, preparing for it at the end of 07 then he has this setback to hold back his calendar for a few months! the question is, in the clay season, is he better or worse off than in 07?? in terms of his tennis mostly...

also, people do not want to believe that a real illness actually hampered Rogi's progress this year... they'd rather believe that he's simply crap and s retire and cease to be the No 1 guy... in favour of such a charismatic joker as NTG [completely forgetting about TFA of course, exc for the clay season]

I've never heard of his opponent. The fact that he found this win so hard baffles me!

the guy's been around for awhile, he's about 30, never won a title... pure claycourter, nothing to lose, blablabla... and Rogi had never played him before... always dangerous... :p

This is what happens I underestimated this Hidalgo dude and look what happens, the "pusher" almost pushed Federer to the brink. These are certainly worrying signs.

Well fortunately he survived this near colassal loss.

It might be a matter of young age and ignorance. But still it puts me off big time, as I happen to know quite a lot of young people having had their completely undeserved 'share' of diseases, and I know what it can do to people who just have 'ordinary jobs', let alone a TOP ATHLETE! ~shakes head~

I'm afraid you are entirely spot-on here.
(I'm not referring to your remark at 'TFA', here, as I think Raf has indeed proven the world that he's not just a top class tennis player, but a very likeable human being just as much... but that's just me.
As to NTG... charismatic joker? I'd say the most bigheaded ARROGANT player I've seen since Johnny Mac/Jimbo. And that's saying quite a lot! :help:)

my comment about TFA is fr NTG's POV -- he was ignoring TFA in the hc season and now he's glossing over Rogi in the clay season, preferring to put the pressure on TFA, targeting TFA on his best surface... :p

gotta make dinner, laters!!

Yeah, he was indeed ignoring Raf's entire existence during the HC season as the current #2 (and I don't buy any of the silly postings that he didn't do reasonably well during the HC season), and if your goal is to get to #1 while you're STILL only the #3, that's pretty obnoxious... :(

Have a nice dinner, RogiFan! :wavey:

it's only pasta, salad... nothing special... and some Swiss chocs and choco ice cream for dessert... :p

btw, TFA has done better than he did last year to date, even if he didn't defend his IW title... so he keeps gaining pts while Rogi gifts him some, and it sure took the pressure off TFA when NTG crapped out to Anderson in Miami R2...

Plus because Roger never took time off some think it's not possible that he was sick because if he was he wouldn't be playing, he'd be in bed or a hospital somewhere.
