Great match! Lots of twists and turns but Robin won it in the end. Great fight!

I thought that Safin was supposed to be so-called "clutch player". If clutch means shitting his pants in clutch moments - that's OK.

Safin had 3 match points in the TB: 7:6, *8:7, 9:8.
He was leading 5:4 and 6:5 in games in that set.

Well the wrong Safin did indeed show up today...........Good win for Robin, especially as he had such a fight and saved a matchpoint.

He's rather un-Dutchman-like in this regard. He's got some fighting spirit in him, this lad. :yeah:

I think today's loss is very similar to last year's defeat in Monte Carlo: Safin lost to Vliegen 6-0 6-7(8) 4-6 wasting 4 match points.

I have to say I went for a run, albeit silent, around my house at 2 am during the crunch of that 3rd set... Tried to literally shake of the nerves.
Needless to say, it didn't work and I'm quite pissed off so now I can't sleep :(

Let the bashing begin - "hopeless loser, mug, waste" you should really learn to respect players, especially s.o. like Safin who's done so much for tennis. A player isn't great only when he wins you know....

Moreover, I'd like to add that the insults to Safin are also insults to his opponent. Haase is NO mug player - in the past few months, he already beat Berdych, Ljubicic, Murray and Tipsarevic, just to name a few players... in other words, he might well be a threat to a lot of players, and Safin is no exception. Haase is a guy to watch.

You could say Safins career stemmed from 1997 to 2005, now that was the Safin I really loved. But the guy ended up with a serious knee injury. Clearly why his results have been as bad, he never moved from number 3 in the world to where he is now for just randomly decreasing in ability and form. People need to remember, he was an even bigger headcase when he was winning, the difference then though, was that he had belief, confidence, but he is stuck in a shell now. As they say, a shadow of his former self.

Just got home from the tournament, here's my report of the match:

Robin Haase(NED) def Marat Safin(RUS) 2-6 7-6(9) 6-4

Marat meltdown No. 362. For fans this was a depressing spectacle to behold, but in it summed up everything Safin is and isn't as a player today. Up 6-2 4-2 and serving, Safin was in firm control of the match. But just a handful of points later, creeping doubts seemed to enter his head, haunting him, as he gradually started missing. He quickly went down 5-6 but managed to hang on to his serve, barely. In the tiebreaker Marat had his chances, even holding matchpoint at 8-7. It wasn't to be. He lost 4 of the next 5 points to lose the set and quickly went down 0-3 in the third. Again and again Safin set the point up nicely, running Haase side to side, stretching his opponent into sending back the typical weak reply, only to see Safin bludeon the final put away shot inches over the baseline. Regardless,Safin fought back one last time to level the match at 3-3, but that was essentially all he had left in his tank. At 4-5 the Russian double faulted at matchpoint and surprisingly didn't even react - as if he'd already accepted his pre-destined fate of defeat.

That's strange but... Marat is strange. He's completely unpredictable and maybe it's one of the reasons why he has got so many fans around the world.

Expected? I was there. Haase didn't have a prayer until Safin self-destructed 2 holds away from winning the match. The Dutch player did little more than get the ball back at times, but in the last set that was enough. A shame Safin couldn't hang tough like he did the day before against Ferraro...

How time flies -- he is currently ranked 86 and looking to drop out of the top-100

Although in fairness he is probably playing better right now than he has for a year.

I never watch Safin play consistently in a match. Safin is generally erratic for a long period of time then in the blink of the eye, he produces the most amazing shot. Its weird to see him lose his mentality in a short period of time

many players are like that , but in his best moments he was consistent of course not kinda like Hewitt or Nadal or such players.

The deciding moment in the match was when Safin was serving at 4-2 (40-30), 2nd set. He saw the finishing line and faltered, instead of making the final sprint.

Sad he lost this way, after showing flashes of his old self recently. Hope he has some good results in Monte Carlo.

Another perplexing yet predictable loss from Safin... Actually the Vliegen match mentioned befre from last year was the turning point for me, when I finally realized that the Russian simply was not going to recapture enough of his peak form or even a semblence of consistency any time soon, if ever

No, I think the poster was trying to get a speck out of his/her eye when writing that comment ;)

Seriously though, while I can understand disliking the racquet antics, please explain how exactly one "walks around the court like a moron." Does Safin put on an exaggerated swagger/jive walk, go over to his opponent's side of the net, put on clown shoes or something?
