yeah, where is the MIT? well in case it goes ahead, put me down for Nadal to win ... Which is obvious considering Nadal has won 107 matches out of 110 in the past 3 seasons on clay.

Regarding the draw ... Nice one: Djokovic on Federer's side je je :)

Metis has been AWOL. But she is back now :rocker2:

Put me down for SF.

The draw is ridiculously bottom heavy. Davydenko's quarter is pretty tough, and Ferrer is probably the hardest QF opponent Rafa could have drawn. Nole's quarter is a cakewalk, unless Murray shows some clay form.

Oh well. I have to disagree here. If we were objective, we should easily admit that the heaviest quarter of the draw is the first one. In particular, the second 1/8 makes all the difference: Robredo, Wawrinka, Soderling, Stepanek and Nalbandian.

Yeah, I still disagree. Clay is far from Nalby, Stepanek and Sod's favourite surface and, other than Nalby, none are big tournament players.

Compare that to Davydenko's quarter - Davy, Almagro, Monaco, Andreev, Chela, Acasuso.

Rafa - W.

I feel bad for Monaco and Almagro.

Overall, fairly evenly distributed draw, I think.

Rafa's is pretty tough, though: Ancic, Ferrero, Ferrer, Davydenko, Nalbandian/Djokovic/Federer is a possibility.

Hopefully Kuerten can get past ljubicic so he can get destroyed 2nd round.

Of the 4 seeds, Djokovic has the easiest draw.

But all in all, I still think it's pretty even.

I don't see anybody on Roger's side giving Rafa trouble on clay. The baby balls Murray/Gasquet/Djokovic won't do anything here. Roger played badly in Estoril he's lucky he faced a bunch of challenger-caliber players and then fixer Donkey in the final. Honestly, Querrey did Rafa a huge favor by dumping Lord Carlos for him.

On Rafa's side I am stuck on Ferrer in the QFs. I know Rafa hasn't lost to David on clay but this is 2008, the year of upsets. Plus, David just won Valencia. Ferrer has been flying under the radar all year. This makes me nervous.

Oooh, I hope I'm wrong, so wrong, but I will say Rafa in QFs. Bamos, Rafa.

Better not play Barcelona in my opinion. Much better for his schedule. Playing three weeks in a row is not that smart but not playing Hamburg would be better than playing everything.

I fear that Nadal and his team will show us their true smarts and play everything though . Working his ass off in doubles . Same clownish behaviour earned Monaco an injury in the SA clay swing.

the_natural
04-24-2008, 02:29 AM
I dunno about that match, I felt great watching that first set, he was unplayable Mario could hardly get his footing right rafa lost six points in total in the first set, in the second set at 2-0 he seemed to drop out of the zone, he was pretty much hugging the baseline in the first set and then at 2-0 he made one or 2 loose errors then seemed to start thinking about his shots and the follow through didnt look as aggressive, i think that minor change in mentality makes all the difference between hittin right on the lines and hitting 2 inches out as was the case with rafa.

After that it was very unencouraging because he went from that aggressive playing up in the court to rafa of 05-06 Standing several feet behind the baseline, sure he was still trying to change direction on the ball and everythin but he did it from so far back that mario had more time and was able to make rafa run alot more, he also looked alot more comfortable with rallying from the back, I know Ancic also started to red line his game and was just hitting the outside edge of the line to win points but still, its not encouraging when he comes up against Ferrer, Davydenko or even Federer... hell if Nalby picks up form it could be dangerous for rafa to move into his shell like that. Then after he broke Mario he moved back up in the court.....

I also have a problem with his backhand, sure its solid but he doesnt seem to be able to hurt opponents with depth on that shot, hes got that short angled shot which isnt THAT deadly when you dont have that deep one left hand corner to move your opponent far back behind the baseline and keep them from attacking the ball, he was hitting alot of BH Down the line but they had lots of side spin that was moving them back into ancic, so when ancic hit to the backhand side of rafa he was hardly running at all and was also given time to wait for the short ball and then make rafa run.

I know im stressin since its early in the clay court season but rafa can have a habit of "sticking to what wins matches" and if he finds that the 5 feet behind the baseline and running all day, style wins more points he may stick to it, and with the way this season is so compacted and the amount of tournaments hes gonna play (hes gonna do barcelona he loves it and its Barcelona for gods sake, hes not gonna skip on his people), I dont think he can afford to worry about saving points and making himself run more as much as his opponent does, he cant rely on wearing them out either that should be the plan when all else fails. Geeze i hope he keeps up the aggressive brand of tennis, cos hes the only player who can play with that much top spin that close to the baseline and open the court up that much on clay.

Nice start from Rafa I hope he won't spend too much time on court tomorrow.Rafa's first serve rate was really impressive it seems that playing on HC helped his serve.

I don't think his serve is so improved. The difference is that on hard he is going for the aces and that's why his 1st serve percentage drops so much. Now on clay he just puts the ball in play with lots of topspin hence the high 1st serve percentage and higher effectiveness. Because you know in rallies there is no one who can outrally him on clay.

Interesting I just understood it myself why the big servers are far less effective on clay apart from the slow court. There is smth more. The balls get quite heavy from the dirt and they pick up some moisture from the court as well. They fluff up and become bigger. Now they cannot be controled so well with flat serve. Hence players hit it at the net or out. The first serve percentage drops and those who count on their serves find themselves in "no man's land". And if they choose to reduce the speed in order to have more 1st serves in they are again slaughtered.

Anyways even if Ferrer doesnt beat him there is still the match thrower as a potential opponent in the semis, and u know he wont throw a match against rafa the way he did against his beloved rogi in Estoril, i still dont understand why the f@#$ that stupid bald headed tree stump is able to play so confidently against rafa but then when he plays against someone who is completley thrown off by his style and ISNT fast enough to get the majority of his shots back, he completley chokes... i guess its just cos its the swiss miss and he falls victim to the hype, but yeh his game matches up so perfectly to federer and rafas but he only plays his best against rafa and only seems to believe in hismelf against rafa.... I hope rafa turns that around and makes the russian pay, this is like a warm up for Davis cup too.

U know this draw is turnin out to be alot tougher than we originally thought I reallllllyy hope Rafa wins MC, I mean thers huge potential for Nalby or Nole to take out the cheese before the final, and if rafa wins he defends so he moves closer to the number 1 ranking again. But im still really scared of the next 2 matches.... Im not sure if he feels as invincible as last year... And hes definatley lost serve more this year than he did last year at the beggining of the clay court season, but mayeb its a good sign in a way that hes not trying to save points hes going out and winning em and not being afraid of making some errors??? On Rafa's side I am stuck on Ferrer in the QFs. I know Rafa hasn't lost to David on clay but this is 2008, the year of upsets. Plus, David just won Valencia. Ferrer has been flying under the radar all year. This makes me nervous. Oooh, I hope I'm wrong, so wrong, but I will say Rafa in QFs. Bamos, Rafa.

i just said that because i trust in rafa and he is playing great, i know that Ferrer is a big competition and his game is great and i know he can beat rafa but i hope not and i know this season for rafa is going to be difficult becuase we are seeing more great tennis players with different games but he has so potencial and he can do a great season this year.

His serves are faster than before,I remember Rafa a few years ago serving "first-second" balls on clay which were really really slow, now his serve is more consistent and efficient as he added power.I don't mean he shall go for the ace on clay, but it's faster.I've also noticed that he attempts more winner points than before,i don't know if HC have something to do with it!

Concerning the size of the ball on clay, you're completely right, and it's exactly the opposite on HC especially when the temperature is high. You may have tried to play on hard court with an old ball with no fluff around,it becomes very small and fast...eek:p

Feli and Fer is the main doubles pairing for Spain in the DC now while Rafa and even the Robredo mug are more for singles in the DC. "The matches he wins, he grinds them out. :( Even if he wins today 2 and 3 [against Davydenko], it's still a one-and-a-half-hour match, which is quite surprising. Might have had something to do with that there were lots of deuces and BPs and long rallies which meant long games and 5 min per game on clay wasn't THAT long actually. So it shows you you'll always get your chance against him. I'd like to be able to push him tomorrow and see what he can come up with at the most important moments."

And look what Fed had to say:

Damn it i hate that stupid swiss miss, but the cheese will have a good chance of winning tommorow, its just playing without thinkin, just reactive tennis and it looks dangerous.

Rafa is looking like he did in Hamburg last year I dunno what the hell is going on, The first round he was deadly, he was being so aggressive against the short ball, and then it all seemed to change in that Ferrer match, he came out strong and then ferrer steps up the aggression and rafa is on the back foot, rafa looks a little slow too and his footwork doesnt look so good, he looks like hes been overplaying because hes not running around to hit aggressive forehands. And the biggest problem with rafa's game right now is that F@#$ing backhand, its dropping so short, and is such an easy sitter, hes not gonna be able to get away with that tommorow Cos Koyla was just hitting loads of Cross Court Forehands, The cheese was hitting alot down the line and then that short sharp angled one too, and its not even trying very hard just using the pace of the opponents against them.

I swear to god rafa better bring his A game tommorow, I have a really bad feeling about this final though I mean even the forehands are dropping short, barely going past the service line, and hes only showing flashes of brilliance he doesnt look anywhere near as good as he did this time last year.

I think you guuys are right its the doubles, i dunno what Rafa is trying to prove but its just idiotic, I wonder if the pressure of trying to make history in monte carlo is building up too, and the pressure of knowing he has to play 2 finals, do you think he will hold back some energy in the REAL final tommorow so that he wont let Robredo down in the doubles??

Also Anyone notice how far hes moving behind the baseline?? I know I know its clay, but even for him its far, and even when hes getting shots that he can step into, he just seems to be standing in place and hitting it, the only time he seems to become aggressive is when hes in the lead, I have a reallly bad feeling about tommorows final, He has the game but is he gonna bring it...

Oh great i just read that the doubles match was 1 hour 55 minutes. Just great F@#$

Hey long time no see :) But I wish you hadnt agreed with me and had told me i was just being a deluded paranoid fool

Im also really scared because whats with the friggen Slice??? How many times was he slicing/chopping that backhand? Im really hoping that it was just a tactic he was using against Koyla since he does seem to have problems with people using the slice alot he finds it tougher to hit that low ball down the line and if you get enough of those back usually koyla has a problem, but i hope it was one off...

Rafa used to say that when he played the Swiss he was more aggressive because he felt he had to play his best tennis and had to be more aggressive in order to win. Thats gonna have to be the case tommorow...

Damn it i cant get over this bad feeling I really dont think Rafa will be able to win tommorow, The swiss is playing nothing to lose tennis, and as well as rome 06, Rafa on the other hand is playing almost as badly as Hamburg 07 (I say ALMOST because at the very least he is changing direction on the forehand, but thats it, hes just so far back that its hard effective at all.)

Congratulations to Rafa - marvellous display and fully deserved win. Watching today, I honestly don't think he gets the credit from the wider world which he deserves - stupendous stuff. Guess after yesterday I'm in the mood to appreciate guts!

Was pulling for Roger today - it will be Rafa's turn at Wimbledon.

RAFAEL NADAL

R. NADAL b. R. Federer 7 5, 7 5

SCANAGATTA Q. What did you think when you were down 4‑Love in the second set?

RAFAEL NADAL: The true. The true. Just think about I gonna lose the set, but try to lose the set 6‑2, not 6‑Love or 6‑1, for go to a third set with good feelings.

Thatís my mentally was in that moment, no? And just try to fight every point because he was playing fine and I was going a little bit more behind the court, one meter behind. So he has the control of the court, of the point, always in that moment.

And I just try to change a little bit. I was analyzing whatís happening right now because heís winning the points easy to me right now, and I donít see no space for win the point, no? I thought I have to go a little bit more inside and try to fight every point.

Q. What does it mean to you to win your fourth title here?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, very happy, no, for sure. Is very special moment for me. You know, I played all the tournaments this year very well, but I didnít play the last match of every tournament well because I lost easy in Australia, I lost easy in Indian Wells and I lost easy in Miami.

Thatís, you know ‑‑ when you are playing well, when you are feeling you can win a tournament, and finally when youíre arriving to the last round and you play bad match, always you go into the next tournament with bad feeling, no?

So was the moment for if I have to lose, lose well, playing well, no? So today I play well. I fight every point. So winning for me fourth times in a row is very, very special, no? Probably one of the nicest tournaments of the world.

Q. Do you actually feel different playing a final on clay than you would, say, playing a final in Miami or playing a final in Australia? Is there a different feeling in you?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, the only thing I know if I am not playing very well, I have more time for think or for change the game. You have more options here, no? In Miami, you donít have many options. You have to play aggressive. If you are not playing well, try to be a little bit more defensive, is very difficult always, no? But here you have more alternatives for do, no?

So when I go to the court, I go always with a little bit more confidence, because that give me a little bit more confidence. But feeling nervous for sure, no? When I start the second think, I wasnít win a title yet, I feel it a little bit nervous, no? But finally I got luck, no?

MARTUCCI: What does it mean for you to take so many times the serve of Roger Federer? So many times you were leaving him one point, zero points.

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I donít know, no? I just try to put pressure on his backhand when I have the chance, try to be aggressive, and try to have a good return long. Thatís only my goal when I am in the returning, no, play long the first shot for try to have the control and can go a little bit more inside.

I know he had two breaks up in the first set. I come back. And in the second set the same, and I come back, too. So was a little bit strange because thatís not normal, no? When youíre playing a final against Roger, heís a big server. Anyway, if you are playing against me, is not normal to lose the serve four times, no, because, you know, during all the tournament I lost my serve, I donít know, three, four times, no more, no? And today four.

Q. Are you more surprised to win a set against Federer from 4‑Love down or win the doubles?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, probably when you start the week winning the doubles is a bad news, because you have to play a lot of matches, you have to play after your singles. But finally when you are in semifinals, you have a big illusion for try to win the doubles.

Anyway, if I lost the singles yesterday, well, when you are in the semifinals of a big tournament like Monte‑Carlo in doubles, you have a special motivation, no?

Well, I know if I am playing well with Tommy, we have good chances on clay for play good. I think is more difficult come back for 4‑0, no?

Q. Does it mean something for you to win the doubles? You seemed to be very aggressive. In the semifinals, calling the supervisor.

RAFAEL NADAL: No, we call the supervisor because we thought we are fine about the discussion, no? Well, for us is important because we have Olympic year this year and is impossible (indiscernible) with the doubles. And for sure the doubles help for the singles. Thatís hundred percent true.

Q. You mean for the mental, to be aggressive all the time?

RAFAEL NADAL: It help because you have to volley. You learn a little bit the movements in the volley. You have to return a little bit more aggressive, more inside, so you have another option when you are playing the singles. You can return like doubles sometimes. You practice different shots than the singles. So thatís always a good practice.

MARTUCCI: Looking back to your win against Albert Costa here, if you go back with your mind, what do you remember about that moment? Far away?

RAFAEL NADAL: Looks not far away, but at the same time, yes. Well, all is happening very fast, no? You know, well ‑‑

MARTUCCI: How much different were you?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I am coming here for the first time. Was here I was in the top hundred for the first time, no, when I win against Albert Costa, something like this. Always is important tournament for me, no (smiling)?

Well, is a big change, no? Was the first big tournament for me. I played probably my best tournament in my life since that moment because I play qualifying, won against Kucera, against Costa, have a good match against Coria. Right now everything change, no? Happy about the change.

Congratulations to Rafa on winning his fourth straight MC and also to the Ass Twins on winning their dobles!

Raf's confidence is on a high and he will most likely repeat his clay sweep again this year... who's to stop him? ;)

LOL, I could see only the final 6-7 games and what I saw was beautiful. Roger looked tired to me, though. As if he was playing doubles not Rafa. But he played Estoril so that is maybe the reason or he could not endure Rafa's tempo.
Well done, Rafa!

I think its the latter honestly. You know Federer was also overratted for his performance in that match, They said he was "unplayable" for those first 4 games of the 2nd... No i watched it again, it was a combination of a FEW flashy brilliant shots from federer, he was just hitting his way out of trouble, that was IT, he was going for all his shots and just happened to get a few lucky shots back, then the rest was rafa having that weird concentration lapse that hes had all week, where he starts thinking and then starts to miss and then he moves 1 metre behind the baseline, People SAY that federer was being more aggressive and taking control, but in reality Rafa became more defensive so his shots lacked the usual sting which allowed federer to take the ball earlier/with less trouble and change direction and rafa was doing all the running, he was just scrambling for the ball and it was dropping short cos of how far back he was, and considering all that, Rafa still had a good hold deal of control over most of those games, alot of the time he was actually in a position where he could have hit a winner or he had federer in a bad position on the court and then made an unforced, case in point, the first 2 points of his first service game he hit a forehand (may have been 2 forehands) into the net trying to be very aggressive. that set the tone for hte next 4 games.

One thing i felt from that match was that even when federer was just playing nothing to lose tennis, and simply aiming for the open court and for extreme low percentage shots, it never felt like he really controlled rafa or that he was totally taking the play away from rafa, it felt more like something that he could only sustain for a short period of time and that if rafa fought back and stepped into the court and moved FORWARD when hitting. getting more pace spin depth whatever, then that game plan just wouldnt work. The great new thing with rafa is that is hitting through opponents on clay the way Blake/Youhzny hit through him on a hard court, I really feel that if rafa plays this great new brand of aggressive tennis that nobody can actually be aggressive against him on clay, Not davydenko not federer not hewitt as they all were last year, cos its just too difficult.

Also this time last year rafa woulda lost the second set, his return of serve is a huge factor now, hes not just putting it back with alot of spin hes taking more initiative when returning. This was the tough final he needed against a top player to shake off any remaining doubt he had about his abilities late in the tournaments

Nice post the _natural! :wavey: That's pretty much what Rafa also said in his presser that he got more passive at the start of the 2nd set and had this lapse of concentration, and of course it's always connected - one player steps back a little and the other player steps up, there was some brilliant hitting from Fed, gotta admit.

Hi :)

Congratulations to Rafa for winning both titles in MC. :bigclap: I knew he could do it. :D
Congratulations to you all, my fellow Rafafans :D

I'm very ...no, I'm extremely happy for Rafa and his titles. All of his matches were very exciting and the final was ... tense and still so beutiful. Especially when Rafa started winning every game after 0-4 in the second set. Unbelievable!! That was magic.

Rafa is definitely the best clay court player ever born and the undisputable king of Monte Carlo. :worship:
