Just what the doctor ordered, some easier matches and time out on court. Giving there are no late withdrawals, his first final should come here, and Davydenko (maybe not, he does slip up in smaller tounreys) in the final.

Do some damage on the red dirt :bounce:

Any thoughts on potential matchups?

Maybe a Volandri rematch? Or time to finally get a win against Hrbaty? ;)

The tournament looks like an excellent opportunity to start into the clay court season.

What about the rumour that Djokovic asked for a wildcard for Estoril by the way?

Exhausted from signing his coffee table book I suspect.

Nah, serious: I think Djoko actually wants to keep a healthy schedule for this year, concentrating on the Masters and GSs, to prevent a premature burn-out like he had last year, so he cut down the smaller tournaments. That's not a bad decision I'd think.
In all, I get the impression that the whole Djoko-to-appear-at-Estoril was never more than a rumour.

A bit strange that he decided not to defend his title there, but on the other hand he knows what is best for him and his body. The season is long and greater challenges as Estoril await for him ;)

federer could play great defense in the past and force errors from davydenko going for too much. Now he cant do that.

I have to agree with you here, Mikey. As we saw in the AO and in IW/Miami, he still doesn't seem to have much trouble beating the lower ranked players, and he's even looking good while doing so - but the real top players (I'm NOT counting Fish here :p) do give him a lot more trouble than before (all perfectly in line with the mono claim, btw).

I just hope he makes a good run in Estoril, gets some match practice under his belt and manages to reach the final. If it's Denko who he'll be meeting there (as we know by now it's always tough to make a proper guess), I just hope he puts up a good performance, whether he wins it or not.

it was written in GM roger hires a temporary coach for the clay season

Federer received by small crowds
SWISS TREINA ALREADY IN COURT OF CENTRAL JAMOR
The Swiss Roger Federer was welcomed by several hundred people on the premises of the Estoril Open, in the National Stadium, shortly after the 16 hours. The leader of the world ranking distributed some smiles but followed instantly to the Court Central, where he is training.

With the young Portuguese Joao Sousa as a partner of training, Federer is already accompanied by Spanish Jose Higueras, who debut as a new technical of the Swiss tennis player, the great star of 19. Th edition of the Estoril Open and tennis of the day.

It should be noted that Higueras is a former tennis player who joined the Top-10 world in the years 80, having played then, in 1983, the Open de Portugal, expelling the now national selector, Peter Lamb, in the first round. From his hands already passed, among others, Jim Courier, Michael Chang, Pete Sampras, Carlos Moya, Sergi Bruguera and Guillermo Coria.

After about half an hour of trading of ball with John Sousa - who was promoted just before the great surprise of qualifying in dismissing the Russian Golubev (2. º head-of-series - it came on the scene other Portuguese, Rui Machado, who has thus also an opportunity to work with

Yay I got to see roger's training session. For those that say roger doesn't work enough I have to say it looked a pretty hard training for me... It was well over 2 hours when I left.
Roger practiced against sousa and rui machado, 2 portuguese young players. The practice session was closely followed by higueras, which looks to get along pretty well with roger - they had a few long talks during the breaks (it seemed to me to discuss aspects of roger's positioning in the court).

Roger looked very focussed (didn't smile much) and his groundstrokes looked sharp (despite some mishits).
What impressed me the most was his bh slice - the ball stayed so low!! It was also interesting to see roger use successfully the fh amortie (don't know exactly if this is the english term) - I wonder if this is already a suggestion from the new coach...

Roger's one of the few that doesn't play real MM events, but considering he needs all the match practice he can get I have no problem with him playing here.

The reason I mentioned it was because it's so amazing to think Fed has won almost 50 titles the last 5 years and NONE of them were MM and very few were smaller tournaments.

You have Marseilles, Munich, and Vienna in 2003.
You have Gstaad and Bangkok in 2004.
You have Bangkok in 2005, maybe Rotterdam.

Most of those had better fields than the tournies Mac and Connors won in their heyday.

god.

Seriously. Imo the only WEIRD loss Roger had this year was against Mardy Fish. All of them were NORMAL. I've seen Roger winning against players like Soderling in 76 76 before. Almost every match that goes to tiebreak can go either way. Many matches Federer played against Karlovic went to tiebreak. What if had he lost some of those matches? :S The problem is that never lost them before, but now he is losing them once in a while.

From rf.com...sounds like nothing is official with Higueras yet. I hope it works out and he works with Roger for the entire clay season. Also glad to hear Roger say he's feeling good and ready for the clay season. Let's hope it translates to some good results. :)

Dear Fans,

Today I arrived in Estoril for my first clay court tournament of the year. I am excited to be playing this tournament for the first time and look forward to playing in front of the portuguese fans. Joining me in Estoril this week will be my fitness trainer, Pierre Paganini and Swiss Davis Cup capt, Severin Luthi will come later in the week from Belarus.

I am also excited as I have asked Jose Higueras, one of the most respected and accomplished coaches in the world of tennis, to join me. Jose has coached many of the games great players including former #1 Jim Courier and Michael Chang. We are going to spend the week together to see if we could make a good team.

I am feeling great, eager and ready for the next several months of tennis in Europe,

Love

Yeah, based on Roger's statement about him not knowing what he wanted from a coach, this temporary arrangement makes sense. Even if these two click during the clay season, I am not sure what Jose can do for Roger after the clay season other than provide a psychological crutch.

Also, I thought, Jose was under contract to coach Ginepri so I am not sure whether that contract has terminated.

you want to know his credentials? he has worked w such RG champs as Michael Chang, Carlos Moya, Sergi Bruguera and Jim Courier -- later he worked w Sampras but couldn't get HIM to a RG title... but then Pete isn't Rogi on clay... so I'm sure that Jose's opinion will count for sth ;)

Tennis ace Federer happy to try his luck on clay with Higueras
Mon 14 Apr, 06:53 PM

ESTORIL, Portugal (AFP) - Roger Federer will test the waters starting on Tuesday at the Estoril Open with the hopes that a coaching trial with Spaniard Jose Higueras could translate into long-term clay-court success.

The Swiss confirmed on Monday that the 55-year-old former great who has guided Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and Michael Chang among others will be a great aid in polishing his dirt game.

The world number one who is seeking his first title of 2008 after dealing with the mononucleosis virus at the start of the season, is playing at a non-Masters Series or Grand Slam event for the first time since winning Munich five years ago.

Federer and Higueras have worked together for three days, with the Swiss optimistic that the new relationship will play immediate dividends.

"Jose is gonna do this week and we will see how it goes from here," said the 12-time Grand Slam winner who refuses to characterise his search for a Roland Garros title as his main objective.

"It's just all starting, I'm happy he's here," said the 26-year-old who begins play on Tuesday against longtime friend Olivier Rochus of Belgium in the first round.

Federer, who parted with Australian Tony Roche last May said that he considered the possibility of hooking up with Higueras during his American tournament swing last month, where he reached an Indian Wells semi-final and played the Miami quarter-finals with a loss to Andy Roddick.

"I've been thinking about a coach for a long time, who would be the right guy," said the Swiss. "There here are not too many of them out there.

"Once I had Jose in my mind I asked if he was interested. He's quite flexible and came over. It all happened when I was in the States, I took the decision there."

Federer displayed his trademark cool demeanour when faced with a season where he gone through the first quarter without reaching a final.

"I was sick as a dog at the start, I'm happy I was able to bounce back.

"My first goal was to feel better again, get over the sickness.

"We're now in a different part of the season, it's back to zero for everybody.

"I disagree with those who say I'm playing bad. I'm definitely not playing bad. I'm on the verge of playing great again, that's what I'm looking at."

Federer said that his work with Higueras has more than just winning in Paris as a focus.

"You try to improve as a player, You need people around who make you better, fitter and stronger. Those guys work hard to make you play better.

"If that happens at the French Open, that's the perfect scenario. But I think it is the wrong approach to concentrate only on Paris.

"We'll have to see how this arrangement goes. It's pretty open at the moment.

"It's a similar arrangement like it was with Tony Roche - but first we have to get through this week and see how it goes from there."

there's no need to wonder if Jose can help Rogi off the clay as Rogi wasn't intending to work w him beyond the clay season... but there's always such likeable, compatible guys like Jimbo or Brat... :p

I think last year at one point he won 5 or 6 tournaments in a row. As much as I like Tiger I was glad to see someone else win only because of the stupid US media practically giving him the trophy before the tournament started and already proclaiming he was going to win the Grand Slam this year. Even going into Sunday and being 6 shots back of the leader the media here was saying Tiger would be the one wearing the green jacket at the end of the day. I just love seeing them with egg all over their faces.

According to Tony Godsick working with Higuerus would not be just for clay season but something similar to the arrangement he had with Roche. If this works out it will be interesting to see what their arrangement is post-clay. I actually don't think Roger needs a full time coach that attends every one of his matches. Heck he's won 4 US Open titles and never had a coach there with him.

Top-Ranked Federer Tries Out New Coach

GENEVA (AP) — Roger Federer, stuck in a slump, said he will work with coach Jose Higueras at the Estoril Open in Portugal this week.

"I am excited as I have asked Jose Higueras, one of the most respected and accomplished coaches in the world of tennis, to join me," the top-ranked player said on his Web site Monday. "We are going to spend the week together to see if we could make a good team."

Federer begins the European clay-court season at Estoril having failed to reach a final in four tournaments this year.

Higueras is a clay-court specialist who coached a teenage Michael Chang to the 1989 French Open title. The Spaniard reached two semifinals at Roland Garros as a player and also has coached Americans Jim Courier, Pete Sampras and Robby Ginepri.

"It is a test period, but it is not just something for the clay-court season," Federer's agent, Tony Godsick, told The Associated Press. "Roger is not looking to hire coaches just for specific surfaces. This is something he is testing out to replace the arrangement he had with Tony Roche."

Federer has worked without a coach since splitting with Roche last May. He is off to his worst start to a season since 2000, due in part to a stomach virus and mononucleosis.

The 26-year-old Swiss star plays 80th-ranked Olivier Rochus of Belgium in the first round at Estoril on Tuesday. Federer is scheduled to play Masters Series events on clay at Monte Carlo, Rome and Hamburg, Germany, before attempting to win his first French Open title.

Am I right that they aren't showing tennis right now?
They are not showing tennis right now, was showing Karlovic...I guess they will turn to tennis very soon, and the quality now is perfect! Maybe try again, and Luna as well :wavey:

From SB..it looks like he is not able to read Rochus' serve.

From TV it looks like he can read them but the thing is that he makes too much errors that i think have to do with him not being yet perfectly adjusted to the Clay Timing.

Still he's serving SOOO WELL!!! the only point he failed was when he tried a backhand amortie

40 UEs not good. I just hope he's starting to play better and can grind his way to a win. Taking the 2nd set is a good start.

I'm with Rogifan I have no expectations this clay season and having a new coach with him doesn't automatically = playing great again....at least not at the start.

oh well, if this match gives Rogi more clay matchplay, fine by me, but he has to win it...
