From Eurosport: Goran Ivanisevic bowed out of men's professional tennis on Friday after a 6-2 6-3 6-4 defeat by Australian Lleyton Hewitt in the third round at Wimbledon. Bidding farewell on the same Centre Court where he won the Wimbledon crown in 2001, the 32-year-old Croatian had no answer to seventh-seed Hewitt's dynamism in a one-sided encounter

--------

Why is it that all the matches I so look forward to end up being one-sided maulings? *sigh*

Well, Goran did not play much in the past year, and his body is fragile. So, I kind of expected those result

Very nicely done, Lleyton! It's almost funny to write this, but damn, Goran just couldn't handle Lleyton's big serve! :worship: :worship: And Lleyton was very classy at the net with Goran.

Congratulations on a great career, Goran, and keep us entertained somehow in the future.

I would like to go this year, but I just got a job at a restaurant and i have to take off a week before LM to go on vacation with the fam, so I know I cant take off right after i took off a whole week! I dunno what to do. If I go, I will buy tix late. But hopefully, I will go, i mean, Lleyton will be there!!!!!!!!!!!

It's sad to see Goran leave, he's so great to watch on a court, always in for a joke. And today with his Croatian shirt after his loss  Great guy, fare well Goran!

Part of Lleyton's post-match interview:

Q. How is that as an occasion, apart from the fact you won in straight sets, but Goran's last match?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, it's a weird feeling, I guess, walking out onto Centre Court knowing that if you win against one of the probably the most likable guys out there on the tour. Obviously, he's got the crowd support and that. It sort of puts an end to his career. You know how much Wimbledon means to him, as well.

So it's an awkward situation, but, you know, I think I blocked it out as well as I could going out there today and just figuring that, you know, I've got an opportunity to get myself into the second week here at Wimbledon. That was my mindset right from the word go.

Q. What was the exchange at the net afterwards? What did you say to each other?

LLEYTON HEWITT: No, I think he said something like, "You killed me out there today," or something. You know, I just said, you know, "You're a great champion. It's been an honor playing against you out here on Centre Court."

Q. When the match ended, were you watching him at all?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Well, I was watching ‑‑ I more wanted him to have, you know, a walk off the court last. You know, for the crowd, his last time out there on Centre Court obviously, for the crowd really to embrace him as such a great champion that he's been out there.

I was more trying to get out of his way more than anything.

Yeah, it'll nice to see Lleyton play from a seat where I won't have trouble seeing the ball or figuring out which player is which (yes, Arthur Ashe Stadium, I'm talking about you). Hope you can make it!

Yes.

Get a grounds pass instead.

Ashe is a big stadium, and the upper decks are very hard to see from. Good for drinking and talking to your friends, though, and you won't get yelled at for talking, like you would closer to the court. Either get a lower deck seat (scalpers will have single session tickets, which are legit), or stick to Louis Armstrong, the grandstand, and the non-show courts. Be sure to hang around the practice courts, you'll see everyone eventually.

I am really going to miss Goran. He is such a likable person and though he lost today he at least lost on the same court he won the title in 2001. I wish him all the best.

I suppose he's likable ... when he's not spouting homophobic slurs.
