Hi, I started a new thread like Marat is starting a new season :o

To be honest, I wasn't expecting anything from Marat at Wimbledon. However, I do expect a lot on his best surface. Still holding onto the faith, and as Yogi says, "It ain't ovah till it's ovah" :D

I won't be able to follow most of the hardcourt season as I'll be away on vacation. I wonder whether that's a good thing ;)

I'm definitely hoping along with you guys. For some reason, I found his press interview very hopeful for the rest of the season! And very important, I'm probably gonna have excellent coverage this year (thanks to Belgian national tv!) :woohoo:

Where are you going on vacation Ilhame? :)

I'll be spending six weeks in sunny Morocco :)

I have a satellite there and might catch some tennis on german tv or something, but again that means kicking my mom away from the tv, which isn't always easy. ;)

So do you think they'll show the smaller hardcourt tournaments?
With the olympics and the Tour de france..

Sporza forever  ;)

I'm not leaving till July 10, but I'll miss the big TMS tournaments. I think I'll be in time for USO for sure, but perhaps miss the start of the Olympics.

Forgive my stupidity for the following, but in the post-match interview he gave, he mentions the Super 9's. What tournament(s) is that and when is it?

I take it that he prefers hard courts better. Will the Super 9's involve hard courts? I know the US Open does.

Thanks in advance. ;)

PennyThePenguin

super 9s = masters series

the old name for the TMS.

marat's odd... he sometimes uses super9s then in other interviews kinda remembers to be politically correct and says masters... ah well... some terms just stick. like that rubish about "partially permeable", "semi-permeable", "selectively permeable" membranes. (don't mind that piece of useless info)

maratski
06-24-2004, 08:41 AM
Most players still talk about the S9 events. I've heard so many players use the term.

this thread cheers me up a bit... at least i'll be looking forward to something from marat. Go marat! who said anything about giving up?!

junekidd
06-24-2004, 03:26 PM
HOHO, drf716, it's just he himself that said "give up", but now he has apologized for that saying.
I have to do some other things to spend this three-week holiday. and then to look forward to the great result of marat on his hardcourt season!

They showed Halle and Queens, so they're probably gonna continue on that path,no? At least the TMS and perhaps some other? And a decent coverage of US Open -meaning more than belgians- for sure!
I don't know... I'll already be happy with an hour here and there!
Yeah, viva Sporza - especially for us bums without Eurosport...

I didn't expect much from him either on the grass court, even though he has the game he doesn't have the mentality.

I definetly think that Marat will kick@$$ on the hard-court, but you never know.

There are so many people here who like Justine Henin-Hardenne!

I havent completly given up on him, yet. ;) :o Hoprfully he wont disappoint us in the hardcourt season, like the grass season, and i've yet to find out why he hates grass so much. He's got the game for grass. Lack of confidence, and tactical strategy i'd say. Actually, i thought Marat's best surface was indoors?? He's won the Paris Indoors like twice, so i figure he's damn good on the stuff. :)

I have a question! Marat's next tournement is Toronto TMS, right??

Denise
07-13-2004, 04:24 AM
yeah, seems that marat will gonna play in toronto....will he suppose to play in LA and sopot??? Well, he said that he won't play small tournies, right??

holagirl56
07-13-2004, 06:20 PM
Marat withdrew from LA, because he is currently taking a vacation. He says that he will play Sopot only if he's performance needs it.

If you need to know more go to tgfr.com

Well, his HC summer started atrociously with drawing Hardcourt King Kiefer first rd. Toronto. It was a tight match. At least he didn't tank

Maybe, still he should have played a warmup like LA. Where is Lundgren?

Off to Cincinnati.

PennyThePenguin
07-29-2004, 12:57 AM
lundgren's sitting in the box...shaking his head every now and then... but if this new semi-mental toughness is due in part to him...then... i'm not complaining. marat needs to raise the concentration level though... but of course. we already knew that :D

Jmp has me looking at the positives of Marat's defeat and his year in general.

1. Came off a year of injury and #83 in the rankings to reach the finals of the Australian Open for the second time, beating Roddick and Agassi along the way.
Jets all the way to the 30s in the rankings.

2. Reached the 4th rd. of the French Open, where he was derailed by blisters.

3. Reached the quarters of Cincinnati where he was defeated by a real rival, Hewitt.

4. Moves up to No. 13 in the rankings, 10 points from No. 12.

5. Yet to play in his best tournament, the US Open, and great possibility to reach the top 10.

Not a bad season all in all :)

( a tourny win would be nice though)

Shadow
08-06-2004, 07:45 PM
well, considering he started the year as no 83 and where he is now, and his AO performance, its not so bad at all but considering his loses then, especially since Hamburg, and HOW he lost, its really frustrating.
and yeah, where is a title? he has won 3 titles after 2000. :o

Tennis Fool
08-06-2004, 07:53 PM
The titles will come again. Don't worry.

And remember, this is the Marat who has a hard time with 3-setters, so going deep into Cincinnati and to be competing again with the likes of top 10ers is great!

Shadow
08-06-2004, 08:06 PM
I want to be as positive as you are. Lets hope they will come.

I agree, we can take positive things from this week, because he has won 3 matches in a row, but i really thought he would be really hungry to win against Hewitt. But there was no sign of believe and will, he looked like he didn`t believe to win from the first point of the match.

The only thing I'm concerned about is his wrist. He had it taped apparently. But as JMac says, sometimes those aches and pains are louder when you're losing.

Shadow
08-06-2004, 09:47 PM
I worried about it too, i hope it`s ok.

Or maybe he stepped his play a bit back because he was afraid something will happen to his wrist again, as it was bothering him. Its said his backhand was flying on him.

his wrist seems fine....ouf!!!!!! :)

Q. What was the problem with your wrist?

MARAT SAFIN: No, just was a little bit too, you know ‑‑ taped too strong.

Q. Has that been a problem before with your wrist?

MARAT SAFIN: No, I'm just protecting it by putting all the time the tape, just protecting my wrist.

sorry if I'm asking an obvious question but I haven't been on the Marat board lately so have no idea what's up with him...was just wondering if he was playing the Olympics or not?? I saw he was down to play doubles with Youzhny...and then I see he's going to Sopot which is kind of a stupid thing to do if he's playing in Athens straight after, so was a bit confused!

BelgianWaffle
08-07-2004, 04:49 PM
we are all confused ;)
Apparently he is playing Sopot *and* the Olympics

Shadow
08-07-2004, 04:53 PM
yes he is playing both. Sopot to keep the promise, he made.

anyway, Tennis in the Olympics will only start Sunday, the day of where the final of Sopot would be played.

PennyThePenguin

weird guy, playing both sopot and athens. ah well....

~EMiLiTA~
08-08-2004, 07:42 AM
Thanks for the info guys!
Well, yeah it's kinda weird this whole Sopot/Athens thing...different surfaces and everything...you'd think this week would be an ideal time to rest and prepare himself for Athens. There are some other players doing a similar thing too...I think Rafa Nadal is also going both, but in the Olympics he's only playing doubles...if these ppl get deep into Sopot, it'll be a big rush for them afterwards.
Whatever this promise is that Marat's talking about, he knew Athens would be after Sopot so why did he put his name down for Sopot in the first place? I really don't get him sometimes! Toooo enigmatic for me!

Shadow
08-08-2004, 12:25 PM
I think no one can really get that guy sometimes. Thats part of the rollercoaster lol ;)

Tommy girl, as Einstein said " the most beautiful thing you can experience is mystery" so there's no such thing as too enegmatic. ;) I realy like him when he's mysterius, plus I don't think that the Sopot thing is all that weird. i mean Myskina is doing it in WTA.... Or are they just two crazy Russians? ;)
