I also want to know the reason for pulling the plug on the SA clay swing this year.

Whenever he plays on clay, of course, he always wins, but more than that, he seems to get confidence that remains even after the clay season. After RG, he switches straight to grass and has great confidence in Queens and Wimbledon

In 05 when he made his mark, he skipped IW before reaching the Miami final, and this was after a mini clay season.

Not only is it easy points, but the money is also there, and of course, confidence, which has no price.

I also want to know the reason for pulling the plug on the SA clay swing this year.

Good question, I've been asking that myself as soon as I heard he'd indeed be appearing in Rotterdam...

Can only think of two reasons:

1) - He believes that playing this tournament + Dubai is a good practice/may enhance his HC performance, etc.
2) - Both of the tournaments pay excuberant appearance fee/prize money. Rumours are that Krajicek (or at least the sponsor) indeed pulled his wallet to have Rafa contend in Rotterdam, and well, as for Dubai, it's no secret that they have cash like oil.

If anyone can come up with better reasons I'll be glad to hear them - as I can't!

Dubai, IW and Miami are crucial. He simply just needs to keep a sizable lead over Djokovic and remain semi-close to Fed.

Remember, Fed also has some good points to defend in the clay season, F in MC, W in Hamburg and the RG final.

Dubai starts next Monday. As for the No1 we should all forget about that right now. Not likely to happen any time soon. The important thing for Rafa is to play better, avoid bad losses like the one against Seppi  and hopefully win one of the 3 upcoming HC titles. I really don't think he will repeat last year's clay season. That would be too much to expect IMO. I'll be happy with just RG... :D

Rafa doesn't need unfathomable courage to beat Kohli, I think.

Nope, but in their long years they have only played each other twice on hard and once on clay in DC.

It's about time we saw another Roddick-Nadal match.

It looks like since the modern ranking system was introduced, that Federer just got the worst opening round draw of any number 1 ever. The next worst was Lendl who drew number 13 in the Tokyo Indoor in 1985.

Murray is the top 5 player on hc and a tricky macth up for Fed. Well, in the worst case scenario there is a lot of time to prepare for the match with Pete.

 A win will be good here. Murray will be in the top 5 soon. I see that Nadal has got another tough and tricky draw. This is probably the hardest tournament in the world to get an easy draw since the draw size is small and everyone is playing yet it happened again.

Murray is the worst possible player Federer could've gotten. If Murray is serving a decent % i.e. over 55%, it will take Fed playing his best attacking tennis to win.

I'm a big Feli fan, so I care. I'm hoping between the singles and the doubles that MAYBE he can get through a first round match. His ranking's dropping, so he could really use it.

As for Rafa, I know things didn't go well in Rotterdam, but I wouldn't expect him to start making a habit of losing so early. He should do well in this tournament.

Hilarious! The first half of that thread is a bitch session mixing complaints over Rafa's poor hardcourt play and worse scheduling, complete with the "SA clay swing! SA clay swing!" Some time around the desperate "Can Nadal still get #1?" posts and the obligatory "Not since Rotterdam and not before Wimbledon." replies, it switches gears and focuses on Fed and his fans.

***

As for the Fed-Murray match, it's rotten luck for both. Murray has had a pretty successful start to the year. It was quite unfortunate to draw Tsonga in the first round of the Australian, and now he gets Fed in the first round of Dubai. For Fed, no other possible R1 match up is more questionable, though it couldn't be a better test/indication of what adjustments he's made now feeling better and having lost to Djokovic.

They are not very happy with us over at the Fed forum. But just to show our consistency and solidarity I copied and pasted another post;). Nothing like making the Fedtards angry,eh?

But at this point- I am not expecting anything. If he loses in the quarters or something while playing well- I can live with that. But if he loses early and/or loses because he is playing like a fool- well then

I am missing the upbeat aspect of my pessimism. I think mine could classified as "resigned pessimism." ;) Or possibly acceptance of lowered expectations. ***remembers Seppi match*** No wait...make that no expectations. Maybe if I expect nothing, any loss will be expected and any win will be a surprise. Oh Rafa, this is sad to have to do this as a fan of the number two in the freaking world. Sigh.

That is why I said while playing well. :) PHM and Andy can have good matches, at least I think so. But if say Rafa losses against Andy because Roddick's volleys were effective against Rafa playing like a bozo standing way back...well then.

And at this point, I am worried about him losing number two...so any round adds points. Plus, if he gets to the quarters, that means he beat Kohli.

Basically, my hope at the end of the day is that Rafa just please not suck. I am just finding that I keep lowering my bar on what could be my lowest expectations. If I keep lowering that dang bar, it is going to be subterranian.

Cheryl, you remember the entry field in Rotterdam.
Have you ever imagined that the winner would be Michael Llodra?

God, I really thought he would lose. First set aside, he was playing satisfactory.
I shall ask you, guys, smth. Why is Rafa standing so close to the baseline receiving first serves? I understand receiving the second serves inside the court but first serves, it's ridiculous. Not that this tactic is stupid but the machanics of his forehand do not allow him to take the ball so early nice and well enough. He lost so many points because of that. Strangely I saw a difference in the pace of the court or conditions when the sun was shining and when it went down. Maybe it was just an illusion. Like Rafa started to play better when the sun disappeared which is not that common for him.
Good luck in the next round!

Nadal Battles into Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships Second Round
Dubai, UAE, March 4th, 2008: The strength of the field at the Barclay’s Dubai Tennis Championships threatened to cost the tournament their second top seed in two days as Spaniard Rafael Nadal struggled to overcome Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber on Tuesday.

The number two seed eventually came through 3-6 6-1 6-4, but it took him two hours 22-minutes. He appeared to be in real danger of following Roger Federer out as he surrendered five straight games after taking a 2-0 lead at the beginning of the match.

Kohlschreiber, at a career high 27 after winning in Auckland and reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open in January, troubled Nadal by stretching him wide and serving well. And after taking the first set he kept up the pressure in the second, holding two break points in the first game.

But Nadal held him off, broke for 2-0 and survived another break point in the third game to hold for 3-0. After another break left him serving for the match, Nadal held four break point opportunities on Kohlschreiber at the start of the third.

Nadal eventually broke for 3-2, and although the German broke straight back Nadal was able to break him again to lead 4-3. That was enough to secure victory.

“It was a tough match,” said Nadal. “I didn’t play my best, that’s true, but it’s not easy playing here. Every player is a big player, one of the toughest draws on the tour for sure.

“I was coming without my best confidence because I had a strange loss in Rotterdam. Indeed!  It’s important coming back, winning a match like this. Starting the match 2-0, then losing the first set and five games in a row, so after (that) I was 100 percent mentally. :D

“Maybe I didn’t play the best tennis, but mentally I was very positive and fighting for every point.” :yeah: :)

HAHA Finally someone said it. I hated watching Madrid where they were sayin "hes one of the best returners... possibly the best in the game" jason goodall and doug addler, I think that just proves us right when we say that Commentators are clueless. Rafa gets alot of returns back if hes playing an average server and because he sits in the linesmans chair to return, but with his quality of returns he might as well stand on the baseline and only get 1/4 as many back, if they are at least GOOD returns. Sheesh.

He lost to a loser on hard courts. And roddick has a worse baseline game than 80% of the tour, so it makes no sense. I think it also boils down to Rafas serve, if he was strong and constant in his serving you know roddick woulda imploded as he always does cos roddick is no hot shot returner either. Its really a stupid loss, worse than losing to seppi I reckon, cos at least seppi has more than just a serve and he had nothing to lose against rafa.

Such a shame, the number 1 ranking is just outta reach yet again. Hes never gonna be number 1, gotta win IW and get past the quarters plus Swiss miss has to lose early in both... and rafa enjoys losing to nobody's...

DAMN IT

Well, I think the loss to Seppi is more shameful. Cause he is virtually nobody. I can't comment on Rafa's game right now because I wasn't able to watch the match this time but it seems like Rafa had been making too many silly mistakes. OK, I will give you my 2 cents on Rafa's game as a general. I have been thinking about this since last year. I noticed smth when I watched some older matches. First think the forehand. What bloody happened? Nowadays' forehand mechanics is way too different than before. It now looks less classy and is at the same time less effective. He was ripping so many winners off of it and at the same time the UE he made back then were by far lower than now. Second, as strange as it seems the serve was much more effectove back then although the service motion was quite lame. And finally where the f*ck is that fire in Rafa's game. He seems now like a domestic cat rather than a wild one.

To summarize: I don't mind if he is retrieving from the back too much but I MIND these silly mistakes he is producing. They are too much for such kind of play. Rafa's return game is getting worse. Keep the ball in play! It seems like he is getting confused by all these changes to the game he and his team are trying to implement (trying to be agressive, what the heck was he doing inside the baseline on Kohli's first serve, when we all now he doesn't know how to block properly and that the mechanics of his forehand won't allow proper return). Maybe it's too much. Just now I want to see old Rafa - 2005 Rafa with all his vulnerabilities from that period.

Don't be so negative, people, and don't pay too much attention to the haters' posts in GM proclaiming his decline. The same things were said last year too.
:clap2:

If I had any points I'd good rep you.
That's what I think too. Rafa will come back I don't have any doubts about that. He has had bad periods in his career before but then he managed to overcome all the difficulties and started playing well and winning. And what is the base for all this negativism? He hasn't lost any ranking points since the last year. In contrary he managed to amass some more. True he isn't playing some superb tennis but then who is. Even mighty Roger is having some rough time right now. And talking about Roger even he hasn't been that good when he's been 21. So what's the reason for this entire bad attitude towards Rafa? I'll support him no matter what. He's a great tennis player, he's a champion. At his age he's achieved a lot. Now he's having some rough time and what? Should we dump him, make fun of him, being sarcastic? As if all the abuse he gets from his haters is not enough.
I'll stand by Rafa! I believe in him. And even if his career is in demise due to injury or some sickness then I'm even more with him.

Oh man, the duck beat Djokovic too? This is too good, makes it all better, really.

Exactly. :)

Poor Rafa, some of his fans are deserting him now.

If he loses just once on clay this year it will be even worse...

If his false fans want to go, let them go. He doesn't need that. It shows how weak and negative they are, and that's not the sort of support someone needs. As long as he has the support of his girlfriend, family and friends, who cares? Fans come and sometimes go, but your loved ones are forever, even after the tennis years have gone.

Hi guys I am new to the forum.

I dont think his true fans would not desert him. Those that do are just bandwagon jumpers. Anyway I am quite sure Rafa will eventually find his form. Right now most of the top ten is having a crappy season. It's all those exhibitions they play in the off-season when they should be resting. I hope he does well in IW and MIAMI.

I think s/he isn't. Some of the thread's names, avatars and sigs might mislead ppl into thinkig so. Coming first time to the board and reading in this section I thought Rafa had no more than a handful of true fans here.

there wasn't much he could have done in that match IMO, the duck was hittin' some 150mph serves  and he came up with them when they counted, at 15-40 down :o he followed up by takin' out Djokovic, so apparently he was playing well... anyway, it's just been a weird start to the season so far, but Raf will come back stronger, he always do :yeah:

He doesn't have that many hardcore fans at MTF. And because it's a relatively small group we know each other's styles quite well. And we all agree Rafa is sucking HARD right now

Doesn't mean we don't want him to win every match he plays.

Sucking HARD - best expression ever for Rafa's state right now. :worship:  :worship:  :worship:
Let's hope he'll stop sucking for the US spring masters. :D

P.S. And now I get what Genci wanted to say in the chat thread.

Yes, it does

What I meant was that because we are a small group, we know when thread starters/regular posters are being sarcastic or making an attempt at humour. The fact that we all agree Rafa isn't playing so great was unrelated. I should have made it a new paragraph.
