The match result is almost irrelevant to Kuerten at this point - he's taking the chance to say goodbye to his fans.

Clearly he's hampered with the hip problems in the match and can no longer realistically compete so in this match and in the ones that follow, what I will be focused on is his opportunity for the fans to pay their respects to him.

Always good to see Guga anywhere, anytime, even if the result is not favorable like today.

One of a kind, and forever loved. :hatoff:

I thought I was ready for Guga's retirement after all these years that he's hampered by the hip problems.

But I am not. :bigcry:

Such a lovely person. So sad to have to watch him like *this*, being barely able to move, crying - at least true tennis fans will never forget him.

The most loved player...and classiest player (to fans and opponents)...the beginning of....:sad::sad: his farewell tour.

Had he not had the hip problems, Guga would have:

1. Ended the year #1 the year Hewitt first ended the year #1
2. Ended Rafa's clay court streak,
3. Still be in the top 10 in the world.

He cried before and after the match... his speech was something that I can't explain... if I cried now, imagine when he does his last match at Paris :scared:

Guga is really suffering with the injury... you can see in his expression the effort he is doing just to say goodbye to the crowd... his body can't handle it anymore

Kuerten was the one player who had me watch tennis in the late 90s to early 2000s. He has an amazing backhand that I have faithfully tried to copy in my game and I play almost the way he plays. I love Guga.

I hope he plays some exhibition matches when his health permits him.

It will be a very sad day when he hangs up his racket later this year.
A pity he lost yesterday on his home soil, but it comes as a relief he could finish the match despite having medical attention on court.
Hope his hip will last so he can play all the tournaments he's planning to play this season, including RG.

Well said :)

As a fan it hurts to see that it seems not to be for Guga to end his career with a great result, but even more painful it is to hear that he is still bothered by his hip injury.

It's nice that he plays this farewell tour and gives the people a chance to see him. The reactions of him and Larri and the crowd speak for themselves.

Great post. It is hard to see one's favorite players not playing as well as one would wish them too, mostly because one wants to see them happy and successful. Guga has been very unfortunate with his hip injuries.

In some ways with hindsight one could say he was done once he originally came down with the hip injury all the way back in 2001. After than he was still able to win 4 more smallish titles and he managed to perform pretty well at his favorite tournament, Roland Garros for the next three years but he was still a shadow of his old self.

But in my mind the way he has refused to give up, even when any sensible person would have over 6+ years is as much as anything what makes him such a champion. I would love it if miraculously he somehow managed to find a way to win a few matches in his final year at RG. No one deserves a storybook ending to their career more. But it probably won't happen that way. It is easy to be sad about this.

That is why I like your post so much scoobs. You have managed to put a genuinely positive happy spin on what can seem to be a rather sad ending to a great career. Guga has thoughout all his struggles never felt sorry for himself, at least outwardly that any of us can see, and has always kept his joyful enthusiasm for life. Actually I bet Guga's view towards his final tournaments is not at all different to yours, partly he is doing it so that his fans can say goodbye to him, also I think he wants to be able to say goodbye to them too. Great post scoobs. :yeah:

When you live your life with passion and a smile of your face and childlike sense of excitement you age less quickly. ;)
