Injured or not, this is a horrible loss for Haas. :tape:

This is Hartfield's first ever ATP win on hard court and he had previously won only one match on hard in ATP qualifying (Brydan Klein in three sets earlier this year).

Here are some snippets from an article about the match:
Haas made a series of unforced errors, particularly with his backhand and attempted drop shots.

He was playing his first competitive game since undergoing shoulder surgery on Nov. 10.

"This was my first test, I have progressively started stepping it up over the past 10 days but the shoulder left me at the end of the second set," he told reporters.

"There was not really any pain but the power wasn't there, the muscle wasn't ready.

"It was a big test, I thought I could get close to winning but I didn't expect great things to be honest."

That sounds okay to me.

I didn't watch the match, but I guess Diego played even better than he did against Federer in RG 2006. Congrats to him.

I remember he had won some matches in french indoors atp tournaments in the 2007 last months

First win on the hard courts, though he has almost "Hard" in the surname :tape:

Let's not use the injury or lack of match play excuses here. A one armed player who has been laying on the beach for 3 years should beat hartfield on hardcourt.

I guess Hartfield must enjoy playing on hardcourts despite his previous lack of results because he could have got direct entry into Costa do Sauipe this week couldn't he?

Thats unfortunate.

Even if Haas had only one arm he should still be able to win this match.

I was about to say this is a real bad loss, but then again you have to think about how long he's been out for and then think about it realistically. All things considered, it's not a bad effort from Tommy.

Well it was Tommy's first match of the year since his injury. At least he made it a three setter.

Kinda sounds like that Berlocq's first ever win on hard - double bagel over Young.

But since it was Haas' first match since the surgery, give him a break. Let's see what he shows in Indian Wells and Miami, I think here already we could bash him when he underdelivers.

I guess Hartfield must enjoy playing on hardcourts despite his previous lack of results because he could have got direct entry into Costa do Sauipe this week couldn't he?Of course. For the people who don't know, he has a really good volley, and in hardcourts that helps a lot.
For sure he knows how to play in clay, because he is an argentine, but do not expect bad results in hard... although this victory was absolutely unexpected.

He should be in the shortlist, but Austria's Davis Cup squad will take some beating.

But, as has been mentioned, let's not forget that this was his first match back, and if he doesn't have enough strength in his shoulder, that isn't much he can do against practically anyone half-decent.
