2009: Top 10 Disliked Players. Retired Players only

Action Jackson

This thread will be open to around 27th December and you are only allowed to include players that are retired

So this means any player who is retired can be voted. If voters want to give reasons, then that's cool, if not, then they don't have to.

Here is how the points will be distributed.

#1 = 10
#2 = 9
#3 = 8
#4 = 7
#5 = 6
#6 = 5
#7= 4
#8= 3
#9 = 2
#10= 1

Voting for the same player 10x will only count as 1 vote. Also at least 5 players should be named or it won't be counted.

If you can't separate certain players. Example if they are 1st both will get 10 points and the next one will get 8 points.

As last year the categories were combined to include all favourites and arseholes, this time I decided to split them into active and non-active players after a few complaints hehe.

This isn't going to be easy at all, but here goes.

1. Tiriac - A cheat when he played the game and also his shonky business practices not just through being an agent. He wants to be seen and heard everywhere now, the guy got even richer ripping off State assets on the cheap. Funny he does nothing for tennis in Romania.

1. Connors - Manipulative arse clown and one of the biggest pricks ever to grace a sporting arena. Some would call it charismatic, others would call it boorishness. Takes a special kind of guy to run around the other side of a court to rub out a ball mark and call someone an abortion. This is a guy who needed to be beaten up.

3. Gilbert- Winning ugly sometimes isn't enough, he did very well with the talent he had. The man is like a 24hr radio and also that 0-16 record vs. Lendl great reading.

4. Agassi : Image is everything, well he was a great player without a doubt and there's where it ends. Yes, this alleged classy individual, catches a serve in a Davis Cup tie away from home just to give Jaite a game. The spin around him towards the end of his career was nauseating. A great player without a doubt.

5. J.McEnroe : Talented genius with a tennis racquet and loved watching him when he played tennis and forgot about the gamesmanship antics of trying to put his opponent off just to spur himself on. Got the code of conduct rules changed cause of him.

6. Cash: Nice headbands mate, always looking to blame someone else for what happened to him, instead of taking responsibility. Loves coming out with outrageous comments just so he can be heard.

7. Becker : Couldn't stand this guy at all, very interesting character though, a mixture of the very arrogant and at times quite thoughtful. Loved watching him play on clay when he thought he could beat the best baseliners from the back of the court.

8. Chang : God is my idol, nothing wrong with having religious beliefs at all, just keep to them yourself when playing tennis.

9. Rusedski: Captain Happy.

10. Courier: Doesn't seem to be as big a prick these days now he has retired, but some things are hard to forget.

What do you mean about Agassi catching a serve? He actually caught it with his hand?

My list would coincide with yours except my dislike of Agassi stopped as he started acting nicer (so I could pay better attention to his game), and I never disliked Becker.

Yes, he was thrashing Jaite in Argentina in a DC match. It was Jaite's game point and then as he served Agassi caught the serve with his hand and then Jaite won the game.

I disliked him, but he was worse when he put on the fake nice act.

What did Agassi do to Karol Kucera?

Kucera was having problems with his ball toss, as used to happen quite a lot and Agassi was getting pissed off.

So he started mocking Kucera's ball toss regularly and then hitting moonballs, but the mocking was worse than the moonballs.

Edit: The Poo hasn't officially retired hence his points haven't been counted.

I never cared particularly for....

1 Fabrice Santoro (Mr. anti-tennis -- is he thanks god retired?)
2 Greg Rusedski (daft)
3 Michael Stich (gifted but a jerk)
[[4 Lleyton Hewitt (bull terrier)]] damn still active
4 Brad Gilbert (making a career of winning ugly)
5 Richard Krajicek (don't know why really -- the looks?)
6 Sergi Bruguera (see Santoro, although at a higher level)
7 Yannick Noah (showman with precious little to show)
8 Marcelo Rios (see Stich, although at a lower level)
9 Magnus Norman (dull, duller, Norman)
10 M-V Washington -- worst GS finalist ever.

If Santoro is not retired add Scharlie Steeb.

I would find it difficult to make a list now, but ask me in 10 years time and I would hammer one down in a heart beat.

Me too. Thank God Mac's not at the top of the list. Thought he might be. But I'm with you, didn't dislike most of the old farts, but there's boatload today.

The young McEnroe was indeed a terrible brat on-court, but a far a too ingenious tennis player and a too interesting man off-court to "hate" him. In fact, I have him #1 on my "like" list. If you hate McEnroe you hate the game.

2. Andre Agassi

Earlier in their careers, these two would be flipped. Andre was a big asshole and massive underachiever. As his career progressed, he matured and became a more likable person.

Sampras just became more and more arrogant as he piled up the slams. I'll never forget that comment he made about Rafter, when asked to compare his game to Pat's.

1. Muster - tennis was virtually unwatchable in large portions of the late 90s thanks to this guy. Probably the ugliest and most boring game in tennis history. He also had a disgraceful personality - would do absolutely everything in his power to win with no ethics at all.
2. Rios - entertaining game at times, but awful human being.

Those two are the only players I really dislike personally, the others here I just find their game-styles unutterably boring or offensive for some reason.

1. Andre Agassi -- Giant Asshole. What he did against Kucera was the worst thing I've ever seen someone do on a teenis court.

4. Mary Carillo - Complete bitch shows her absolute lack of character and professional integrity everytime he's on camera. Clearly a man so no reason not to name her.

5. Ivanisevic -- dumbass

1. I agree with others about Agassi. I didn't like him early on in his career with those stupid outfits and his woeful haircut. But later on, when he played challengers to get his ranking up and went bald with dignity, I forgave him. Are you referring to the moonball incident against Kuchera at US Open?

4. Not to be mean, but I agree. She has a rather husky voice.

5. I personally loved Ivanisevic. His quotes still make me laugh today like the one when he said he should be jailed for the way he played.

Least liked players:
1. Coria (I think he's officially retired now).
2. Tarango
3. Kafelnikov

Not really, just hard on himself and very direct, that can rub people up the wrong way.

Some things I've disliked over the years but with no personal animosity to the players involved.

Llendl for making strength and fitness such overwhelming factors in the game.

Courier for the same reason as Llendl.

Becker for his emotional outbursts which jarred and grated.

McEnroe for his tantrums and stalling tactics whenever his opponent gained a head of steam.

Agassi rushing his serves as if he had had enough.

Connors for that roaring grunt that accompanied the ridiculous serve of his.

Kafelnikov for the insane schedule he kept as if tennis was only a means to make money as quickly and much as one can while one can.

Rios for his surly, ornery attitude.

I get a feeling this is the Jimmy Connors dislike thread because I can't imagine anybody more annoying playing the sport.
Until Safin officially retires that is:

1. CONNORS
2 Jarryd
3. Arthurs
4. Chang
5. Wilander
6. Kafelnikov
7. Krajicek
8. Korda
9. Rafter
10.Becker

( these big servers always pissed me off, in 5 years time KARLOVIC will surely make the no 2 ). Agassi used to annoy me too but I appreciate what the guy has done for the sport. I could have swapped him with Becker though, but Becker annoys me more now looking back at some of his games.
