2009: MTF Top 10 Favourite Players. Retired Players Only

Action Jackson
02-07-2008, 04:55 AM
This thread will be open to around 27th December and you are only allowed to include players that have retired.

So this means any player who is retired can be voted. If voters want to give reasons, then that's cool, if not, then they don't have to.

Here is how the points will be distributed.

#1 = 10
#2 = 9
#3 = 8
#4 = 7
#5 = 6
#6 = 5
#7= 4
#8= 3
#9 = 2
#10= 1

Voting for the same player 10x will only count as 1 vote. Also at least 5 players should be named or it won't be counted.
If you can't separate certain players. Example if they are 1st both will get 10 points and the next one will get 8 points.

As last year the categories were combined to include all favourites, this time I decided to split them into active and non-active players.

Agassi or Rafter should probably win this.

I don't remember Gumy, what was he like?

The Gumy Bear was a bit of hothead, who was known for smashing rackets all the over the place, which pissed his managers off.
He had a nice one handed backhand and was a superb and fierce fighter. He was always in great shape and was known for his strength and conditioning. He was very popular with the ladies.
Matches that stick out include his marathon 5 set defeat to Corretja in the 3rd round at RG in 1998, which carried over into a 2nd day after play was suspended, his 6-4 7-5 victory over Rios in the 1996 Santiago final, and his demolition of RG champion Guga at Kitzbuhel in 1997.

My all time favourite is JMac. Some of them are fillers but are mentioned because I had fun watching them on court.
With some of these players, there's a love/hate thing going on (like with 3, 4, 5)
Borg is on the list due to his :worship: clay court qualities and for doing that RG/Wimbledon double but he's not higher due to his Iceberg tendencies (as you can see from quite a few of the list...I tend to go for fire rather than ice).

I second you on the exciting attack tennis, but personally I have to like both tennis and character of a player to become a "fan".

And I think that's why not many people were fans of Edberg AND Becker, they're very differents inside (even if Becker is a nice guy too).

OK we don't disagree then. But isn't this what makes tennis so exciting -- different characters? Your "fire an ice" characterization is spot on -- wouldn't it have been less interesting if both had be cool and controlled like Edberg, or both emotional powerhouses like Becker?

Yes, tennis definitely need different/opposite characters to have great rivalries.

In that aspect, I don't find the Federer - Nadal rivalry as exciting as the Borg - McEnroe one for example.

Fed and Nadal are "too nice" even if Nadal is more demonstrative on court. But off court, they're quite the same.

Fire and ice was about personality as I understood, so for fans of Goran and Edberg, there is enough of both and they indeed seem to appear more often together than Edberg-Becker.

What do you mean with "they appear more oftne together than Edberg-Becker"? Edberg and Becker played each other 35 times, including three times in the Wimbledon final, they broke through at roughly the same time (1985), they peaked at roughly the same time (1989-91) when they both were in the world's top 3, and they exited the game roughtly at the same time (1996).

By contrast, Goran is several years younger than either Becker or Edberg, hence his best years (1992-96) conicide with post-prime Becker and Edberg.

No I meant Alami. He wasn't as talented a player as Arazi (who could be a genius with a racket but was also very lazy), but like Arazi and also El Aynaoui he was another talented Moroccan wizard who had a lot of variety/an all court game and was an entertaining showman.

Well he has not retired officially its true:o but as sad as it makes me I doubt he will ever be back. On the Atp site it has Moya listed as Former World No. 1 Carlos Moya will be sidelined for an indefinite period of time due to a hip-bone injury. His ranking is now down to number 456 and he just turned 33.
I hope I am wrong. Anyway, if I can't vote for him, just take him out and move everybody up. That way Andre and John can both be included.:)

Moyà is already plotting strategy for his comeback (http://www.elmundo.es/elmundodeporte/2009/11/13/tenis/1258116262.html).

See the first post in this thread: You have to name at least 5 players, otherwise George won't count your vote ;)

If you have the time can you give us the result for 2009 please? Thanks in advance George :)
