Why Is Nalbandian Allergic To Optionals?

Nalbandian is currently #9 (largely thanks to winning Madrid and Paris) and three of the five optionals that he is now sitting on are worth zero points yet he hasn't signed up to play in any significant upcoming optionals like Rotterdam, San Jose, Memphis or Dubai.

How serious is he about building up the match fitness and consistency to one day win a Grand Slam title when he hardly botheres with any optionals at all?

If he played more optionals he could be back in the top 5.

David is just waiting for Madrid and Paris again.

I thought Madrid and Paris would have encouraged him to play more and choose the right tournaments.

He wants to enjoy his life and that means taking up activities that have nothing to do with tennis. Who are we to judge him?

So he doesn't play heaps of MM events, good for him.

Hi doesn't like tennis that much so tennis becomes his entire life. Good for him. He only plays good when he is short on money lol. :)

Although he can play on clay superb too, his most successful tournaments have been indoor so it was logical to play in Marseille and Rotterdam IMO (specially after Madrid and Paris titles ) And continue his unbeaten indoor run but he has chosen to play on clay.

Instead of playing two very insignificant clay court tournaments you'd think he would instead player two significant hard court tournaments like San Jose and Dubai.

He should at least be playing Dubai. If he wants to win a major one day he should be playing more optionals where the big names are playing (and Dubai has so many points on offer!).

Or on a positive note, maybe the clay court tournaments he has decided to play shows that he is very serious about the upcoming clay court tournaments and wants to make himself a credible contender at the French Open.

The Copa Telmex isn't insignificant at all for any Argentinean player, and I think it's great that Nalbandian, who is the best active South American player at the moment, has opted to take part in the SA claycourt swing.

No, it just makes sense to play his home tournament. Not much to read into it.

San Jose is just as much of a MM tournament, if not more so.

I just checked and Nalbandian is the #1 seed for both of those clay court tournaments so he should really have no excuse for not winning them both as the competition doesn't look that tough for him (he just better play well similar to what he did in Paris and Madrid).

He's not gotten as bad as Federer has, who plays 2 optionals a year ... and even then they have to be within a few miles of his houses - Dubai and Basel.

Buenos Aires is insignificant in prize money terms, but you must know this facts:

*) It's a home tournament for Fat Dave
*) Jaite (his coach) it's tournament director
*) Davis Cup is a priority for Fat Dave and is a week after Buenos Aires Open. It's also clay.

Anything else?

Because he is allergic to hard work and extra effort? :p In similar fashion to the average child being "allergic" to fruit and veg.

He played 6 last year, that's not that bad. But obviously he doesn't have the motivation to win any matches in them. A 3-7 match record in optionals last year.

Federer is playing 5 optionals this year:

Dubai, Estoril, Halle, Olympics and Basel.

hello! I'm David's fan not typical very critical. David is an arrogant dude who doesn't give a shit about fans at all. Good athletes do the job for the fans that's where money come from. Him is like the weather in Kansas City you never know or like dice players always look for a good roll that never happens.
