Sad for Mónaco, I think he will be out a few months... the winner of González vs. Cuevas will be the champion.

He got injured (left leg) during his doubles match. Apparently, he suffered a small accident and it's a severe pull, even more than that.

Sadly, he won't play the final and, I think, the Davis Cup tie.

I thought this type of ankle injury was impossible to properly diagnose until the initial swelling had subsided. Something that takes days rather than hours.
Hopefully this is a worst case scenario and it's not quite so bad. Then again, I'm no doctor.....

I can't say for sure, but I believe that some players really like to play doubles sometimes with their friends. Or simply because they enjoy playing doubles  it could have happened playing singles or even outside the court (e.g Cañizarez before 2002 World Cup).

Monaco wins Movistar semi, but ankle injury gives Gonzalez title

Vina del Mar, Chile (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez survived an upset bid by unseeded Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay on Saturday to advance to the final of the $462,000 Movistar Open, and then won the title by default, as third-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco suffered a sprained left ankle after his semifinal win, awarding a walkover to Gonzalez.

Gonzalez edged Cuevas 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Monaco cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Spaniard Santiago Ventura, but his injury prevented him from taking on the tournament's top seed on Sunday.

The walkover gave Gonzalez the win in the ATP's first clay-court event of 2008, his third in this event and his ninth career title. The Chilean also won in 2002 and 2004, and was the runner-up in 2005.

Before learning he had won the title due to Monaco's injury, Gonzalez survived two match points by a pesky Cuevas, who had advanced to the semis by upsetting seventh-seeded Argentine Jose Acasuso, 6-3, 6-3. Cuevas won the first set on a tie-breaker, and, on the verge of upending the top seed, could not put Gonzalez away on two match points in the second set. Gonzalez went on to win the tiebreaker, 8-6, and took the third set handily.

Gonzalez overcame an 18-minute power outage at 5-6 in the second set and saved two match points at 15-40 in the 12th game before coming back to win the tie- break and the final set. Gonzalez also trailed 3-5 in the tie-break. In the third set, Gonzalez broke in the second game and saved a break point in the seventh game to go up 5-2 before breaking Cuevas in the last game.

Cuevas, 22, was playing in only his second career ATP event, as he lost in the first round of the 2007 U.S. Open. He also took down fourth-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain on his way to the semis.

Monaco's straight-set win set up a rematch with Gonzalez, who owns straight- set wins over the Argentine in their only two meetings. The third seed suffered a sprained left ankle in the doubles final, however, forcing him to retire from that match, and canceling Sunday's final.

"I'm happy to have won this tournament once again but a little sad for Juan, who wasn't able to play the final," Gonzalez said. "He is a great player and even better person. It's tough for him not be able to play tomorrow's final and probably miss Davis Cup next week. We are good friends and I hope he recovers fast from this injury."

It is the first time a singles final walkover has occurred on the ATP Tour since 2003 in Basel, when David Nalbandian withdrew due to a left wrist injury against Guillermo Coria.

"It's very unfortunate that this happened to me in such a good moment of my career," Monaco said. "I'm sad that I won't be able to play the final here in Vina del Mar and the Davis Cup tie against Great Britain next week. I'm hoping to make a come back at Buenos Aires."

Of course the top players should play doubles when they want. For one thing it helps them work on their serves, their returns and their volleys. It is also nice playing matches without so much pressure. A lot of players regard is as preferable and more useful than ordinary practice.

Likewise the suggestion that doubles players are clowns is again ridiculous. Many of the top singles players are not able to play at all well in doubles just as many doubles players can't play well in singles. A few are versatile and fit enough to do both. Both singles and doubles simply require different skills and talents.

Disregard the poster who originally suggested singles players shouldn't play doubles. He is a fool.

Good post by the way, VaiBrasil, and hope Monaco heals quickly.

The article GWH cited should be correct. According to ATP, Pico's injury is a second degree left ankle sprain.

http://www.lanacion.com.ar/deportiva/nota.asp?nota_id=984012

My Spanish is rather sketchy- but it is my understanding that they are saying that he does have a break in his ligament. Is that correct or I am reading it wrong. So would that actually be more of a 3rd degree sprain? Or do they mean that he has a partial tear- not a complete tear.

And I guess they are going to have to plaster his ankle after the swelling goes down. I do not think he will be able to defend his BA title. I just hope he can make the clay masters and RG. He was having a very good year, semis at Auckland, doubles title, got the furthest he ever has at the AO and the finals here. This sucks. :(
