Thousands welcome Australian Open winner Djokovic at home

Agence France-Presse

BELGRADE - Some ten thousand people welcomed on Saturday the winner of the Australian Open, Serbian third seed Novak Djokovic, at a ceremony in downtown Belgrade.

The crowd, mostly youths, chanted "Nole we love you" as they gathered to cheer 20-year old Djokovic, who had claimed his first Grand Slam last month in Melbourne.

"Nole is the king," "Nole the champion" and "Nole No 1" read posters seen around.

"I can hardly describe how thankful to you I am," Djokovic said from the balcony of the Belgrade City Hall before throwing into the crowd tennis balls, rackets, T-shirts and caps with his signature.

Prior to the ceremony, Djokovic told reporters his first Grand Slam title was an additional motive to him to keep towards the top position in the world.

"I deserve to improve my position as early as this year and to be at least second best in the world," he said.

"Pressure will be bigger on Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, they will have to preserve their position," he added.

With the win, Djokovic closed the world rankings gap on Swiss world number one Federer, whom he beat in the semi-finals in Melbourne, and number two Nadal of Spain.

What is Djokovic talking about. He deserves it when he surpasses Nadal in the rankings :retard:

Can't wait till Nadal makes him eat clay and Federer thrashes him the next time in IW/!

At the end of 2006 he announced he'd go for the top 10 - did he got there: he's totally stable #3 in the world.

If he's announcing he's going for "the top two spot", we can expect an interesting end of the year, with his history of overachieving (or possibly underannouncing) ;)

NOTE: He did say "deserve" (Serbian original conferred) ;)

02-03-2008, 12:31 AM
Well in the end, I don't think "deserve" is the right word, but otherwise his sentiments are correct - it's his job now as #3 to focus on displacing the current #2 and then ultimately the #1.

Certainly Nadal's position could be under major threat if he underperforms in the feb/march swing and then Djokovic also achieves better things on the clay than he did prior to Roland Garros last year.

If those two things happen then we could see a new #2 before the French Open.

I think Nadal is going to have trouble defending his points in Miami and IW, but, you know, Djokovic might have trouble defending his. There's a lot of room for Federer to just widen the gap. :)

Farenhajt

Nadal COULD get ultimately unlucky and clash with Tsonga at the relatively early stages of both IW and Miami. I certainly do hope he has at least SOME weapons/tactics ready.

Yes, Djokovic does need to defend a good chunk of points over the next two months, and then with Nadal pretty much maxed out right through the clay season again, Djokovic has more of a chance, with nothing better than 2 QFs to defend at the three TMS events.

It doesn't look likely that Djokovic will take the #2 before the clay season ends unless Nadal has a major slipup in that part of the season.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out. Federer could do with a strong IW/Miami to ease the pressure on him, with the clay season looming and the prospect of meeting Djokovic in his half of the draw at those events.

here is more precise (not to say properaly quoted) statements of novak.

BELGRADE (Reuters) - Serbia's Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic was given a raucous welcome by around 15,000 fans in central Belgrade on Saturday following his win in the Australian Open last Sunday.

Djokovic, who had gone to his Monte Carlo residence after capturing his first Grand Slam title last Sunday, hurled his racket into the crowd from the city hall balcony and described the reception as "unreal".

"I am at a loss for words to describe how I feel and I am so grateful you all came to celebrate my victory with me," he said.

"As a child, I stood where you are standing now to admire our great athletes who had won silverware for our country in the past and now here I am. It's a very special feeling."

Djokovic beat Frenchman Joe-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6 to become the first Serb to win a Grand Slam and his success sparked massive celebrations in Serbia.

The country had come to a standstill during the final while bars and restaurants crammed with fans staged parties after Djokovic's triumph.

"The pancake shop my family owns at the Mount Kopaonik skiing resort in south Serbia was so packed they couldn't fit in everybody," said Djokovic.

He added: "I took up skiing before I started playing tennis and if I had chosen another sport, it would have alpine skiing because I have so much passion for it."
Fans in Belgrade on Saturday sported Serbian flags and held banners, one of which said "See you here after Roland Garros," offering a sign that many of them expect Djokovic to keep producing results.

The 20-year-old world number three, who played in the semi-final in last year's French Open, said he was looking forward to fresh challenges.

"The Australian Open success has motivated me to work even harder, improve further as a player and I hope to win many more trophies in the future.

"I have had a good break and I am now looking forward to the rest of the season in which I hope to move up the rankings if possible.

"But the first major challenge I am looking forward to is our Davis Cup world group tie at holders Russia next week.

"They are the favorites but we have a very strong group of players who are young, have a great team spirit and an appetite for success."

ANOTHER NOTE: The actual original meaning was "deserve to be", not "deserve to improve". Obviously, he feels he's actual #2, and now there's a job of proving that pointwise too.

And therefore he feels that Nadal does not deserve to be number two? Why does he not just say that he hopes to be there instead of implying that the person holding the number two position is less worthy? There a way of aiming to be your best without slagging off the others ahead of you. And- per you- he is saying that in his opinion- Nadal is not the "actual" number two- points be damned. To me- that is putting down Nadal.

I don't see the implication

I was basing it on the following

The actual original meaning was "deserve to be", not "deserve to improve". Obviously, he feels he's actual #2, and now there's a job of proving that pointwise too.

In my opinion- if one were to say that they deserve to be in a position that is otherwise occupied by another person- and that they are the actual number two- that implies that the person saying such comments does not feel that the person who is the current number two does deserve to be there at this juncture and is not the actual number two.

I am not saying this as a hater or anything. But I do think you can be confident without implying that you are more deserving to be in a position that is currently occupied by someone else. Get the points and you will be there. That's it. Aim for it, fine. But don't break out the word "deserve" because it implies that you are entitled to it and the person in your way is not.

The second article had more moderated comments- that were just fine and dandy to me. There he said he felt it was possible, etc. but did not say that he should be there because he deserves it.

Maybe it is a matter of semantics- but "deserve" is a pretty loaded word and Farenhajt stated that is exactly what Nole said.

I don't see that as putting Nadal down, but more as a "currently my tennis, on the whole, is better than Nadal's, on the whole" type of statement. And in such statements, may they come from anyone and concerning anyone else, I don't see anything condescending, just a normal sportive competitiveness, self-confidence and possibly some off-court analyses.

NOTE: I think (but am not sure) that the first interview was given to the press prior to the mass celebration, and the second was derived from his speech for the crowd.

For god's sake!!! You must be a lawyer! "Did you sleep with his wife?" "No, I didn't". "So implicitly, you are trying to say that you were awake whole night in the bad with his wife. Doesn't that mean you f..ed her?"

There is nothing "implicit" in the statement of the sportsman! He probably didn't even think about Nadal or Federer when he gave the statement. Relax! They are not at the court-room, they are on the tennis courts.

I don't agree with him saying he deserves to be at #2 in the rankings, for now he has less points than Nadal and Federer and therefore deserves to be at #3. But I can't blame him for looking up, he's now at 3#, has just won his first slam it's only normal that he wants to go after the top two spots. He maybe could have expressed himself better but that's not such a big deal imo.

The ranking is quite simple. The person who has more ranking points worked hard enough to gain his ranking and as a result, he has earned his spot.

Once Djokovic gets that #2 ranking, he has deserved it, not before and it's a lack of respect to say otherwise. I think that Novak has every right to say that he aims higher than his #3 spot but he can do that in other ways.

Funny you say that you think people aren't honest about this. Well some of them are, I can tell you. As the saying goes... "Form is temporary, class is there to stay."

Tennis fans 'obsessed with class'? Okay. If you rather have your sportsmen and/or their fans/entourage behaving like rowdies/soccer hooligans, be my guest. But don't start acting like a crybaby if a lot of people don't appear to share your opinion on that...

And NO, I'm not a hater of Djokovich, his fans, and/or Serbia.

...rowdies/soccer hooligans...

Are we on a brink of accusing Nole's box/fans that sooner or later they will start a fight on the stands? Set the court on fire? Draw some blood from the opposing tribe? Accuse umpires/linespersons for being bribed whenever they call against Nole or give him a violation? Do we expect Mountain Hag's special blog during a month long imprisonement because of public exposure? :) Perhaps you might look "hooligan" up.

(Perhaps it's not at all coincidental that the worst soccer hooligans come right from the most class-obsessed country.)

The fact is: Nole's fans/box/entourage are as far from a destructive force as some Vaches Sacrées de Tennis are from true class.

^^ All I'm trying to explain to you is that not all tennis fans appreciate the same kind of behaviour of either players, fans or entourage.

My opinion is that indeed Djoko's box wasn't exactly showing the behaviour that I like to see. But that's just me. As much as I have a right to express MY opinion, so have you to express yours - as long as you don't accuse me (and quite a lot of other people I daresay) of ridiculous 'Serbia-hatred', it's all okay with me.

And with that said - I rest my case.

Well, I'll take for granted you ARE from where your flag says you are - so it's kinda funny you already mentioned Serbia twice where no Serbia was involved :)

As for other posters, I really don't see why you feel you might share the same destiny regarding my view of them... IF and WHEN you attack my country, you will get slapped (as they have been). Not punishing in advance here, love, don't worry. Just be levelled and responsible (as I've seen you are) - or just skip the controversial subjects - and I'll respect whatever you say.

And the sentiment will only grow stronger as Nole draws closer to RF. What will really be interesting to watch is the major eruption of MTF gutter population when Nole takes over the #1 spot.

Lets get this straight once and for all. Not being able to stand Joke is not about social class, not about Western Europe v Eastern Europe, not about misquotes, not about fear of him overtaking Fed or Nadal. It is about him being a fucking asshole who acts like an jerkoff on the court like at the AO, talks a bunch of shit (which his fans try to rationalize away with the above stated bulshit reasons) and the fact that his parents have chosen to be his mouthpiece and act like retarded idiots. That is the simple reason. So keep trying to push your class warfare, and why is everyone picking on the poor Serbs bullshit. Everyone loves Jelena and Ana by the way. It's him and his twisted parents. STFU

You know you're wrong, honey, and you know you're spilling a truckload of crap, since we all know you'd gladly stand the Devil himself if he promised he would never beat (let alone straightset) Rogelio in a slam again :)

(Jelena's clueless against the Belgian dwarf, and Ana still needs to upgrade in order to challenge her - no reason to hate either of them. Yet.)

Keep believing your own bullshit like the Mountain Hag and Howling Jackal. If you need to think that everyone trashes him because he beat Fed and won 1 GS then I will leave you happy in your delusion.:wavey:

Certainly not everyone - for example, we don't see much fans of other top tens trashing him: only angry Fedbitches, worried Rafatards, disillusioned Muzza-worshippers and "straight from 19th century" class-obsessed people. The first three have their interests/hopes directly jeopardized, and the last ones are just... well, what to say :haha:

Don't you guys think you should lay off the Novak bashing threads for a while, because you're starting to look ridiculous and a tad emotionally unstable.

That is the only sane reply in this whole thread. But at least MTF has found a new hobby.

Nobody ever accused Novak of being humble. :p
