Was Ilie Nastase always such an @sshole?

Just read in the news that at Fed Cup Serbia vs. Romania, he called Ivanovic and Jankovic, who were playing a doubles match at the time, "WHORES"! Snezana Jankovic demanded that security kick him out. Then he insulted Boba Zivojinovic, tried to get into the players' box with Snezana and Ana's father, and tried to assault the umpire.

Assuming the allegations are true, was he always such an asshole?

Do you have a source on that?

But yes, supposedly he is an asshole.

Actually, I don't think he is an asshole anymore. Maybe he still has some "manifestations" when tennis is involved( he is our Federation President, after all and maybe he was teased) but he grew up to be a very happy, calm, funny( in a good and wise way) and genuine human been. He has a young wife and 2 very little girls, he is the only one who has the courage to make fun of Tiriac in public, and generally he speaks his mind( a very rare thing in today Romania) but in a very polite way. I was very surprised to see him behaving like that in the last years because I, like everybody else, used to know all those "nasty" things about him!

Isn't that his history? He's an out of control jackass.
What else do you expect from him?
Same with McEnroe and Connors. They show people no respect.

Yes he was. We would cringe when he was playing and he would start talking to the ump. We felt he had no boundries. Whereas, Johnny Mac and Connors did. It was somewhere....

His coach, who was ugleeeeeeeeee was from Transylvania. ;)

This is in Romanian; can someone give a rough translation?

http://sport.hotnews.ro/stiri-tenis-2276272-ilie_nastase_avut_conflict_arbitru_budapesta_fed_c up.htm

Ilie Nastase had a conflict with a referee during fed cup in budapest.

the president of the romanian tenis federation is accused by the blick magasine of agresing a line referee at the match between sorana/monica and ana/jelena. the ex romanian player denies of touching the referee but he admits he approached him to show him the mark/ask him to judge corectly.

"i didnt touch the referee, cuz if i would he would have got kicked".nastase said after being removed by the bodyguards and placed back into the court.

under the title "brutal tenis-ilie nastase hits a linesman",blick says:ilie couldnt control himself after the good game of the romanian team slided on a descendent cours.after a tight decision, nastase ran on the court and slapped the linesman, considered guilty.eventually, the romanian was showed out by 3 bodyguards.it seems nobody could stop him from coming back in the arena a few minutes later as nothing happened.

4 years ago, before the DC match against Switzerland, the same magasine denigrated bucharest ,describing it in grey colours as full of dogs and beggers and with no mobile phones.(nr- even Federe apologised for that article to us ;))

One of the Romanian press agencies says that the Swiss paper Blick publiced that Nastase hit un umpire during an incident in a Fed Cup match between Romania and Serbia. He aknowledged the incident but denies that he hit the umpire. He said for Mediafax:" There were some problems in the double match. Our girls contested a serve and then I went to the empire to tell him not to rob them because they are only children and they gonna be affected. They called for the bodyguards to take me out of the court. I did not touch the umpire because if I did I would beat him so it was for the best that they took me out" He also remembered that the same Blick, which is called by him "a tabloid", publiced before a Davis Cup match between Romania and Switzerland a very depreciator article about Bucharest, a town viewed as a grey town, full of wild dogs, beggars and poor people for who a mobile phone is a rarity.
It says nothing about the "w" word and usually the Romanian press loves to enhance the famous people wrong doings, so maybe it was an exageration? I know very well that once you acquired a bad fame, it stucks with you for ever. And Romania actually had a chance to beat Serbia in Fed Cup! This is enough to make your blood running!

I always sort of laugh when I see posters decrying such small things as glaring at the umpire and cursing on the court. Nothing, and I mean nothing, the players today do holds a candle to Nastase. He bad and funny and charming and gloriously talented. A bit of a madman really. He's kind of uncomfortable for me to watch. JMac and Connors were his disciples, but Nastase was the original.

Nastase, what a guy he was. Very temperamental and a bit of a nutcase, but there was nothing to say he called them whores, so making something out of nothing yet again.

He was an arsehole on court and did many dodgy things, but he might have been the original, but Connors was a bigger arse clown without any doubt.

You should see this Wimbledon Doubles match where Connors & Nastase played together against Newcombe & Roche. They were absolute wankers and Newcombe had a go at them at one stage. They were certainly nut cases on the court, and with the two of them together they were obviously a nightmare to play against. I never warmed to Nastase, although he did have a beautiful game at his peak.

i read through the threads on mtf almost daily but rarely post. my uncle is visiting me and as i scanned the thread headlines, i thought this one would interest him. he told me a great story about nastase. in the 60's and 70's there was a tournament held in salisbury, md called the national indoors championships. from the players involved, it sounds like it was comparable to the masters series we have now. during a finals match, nastase was complaining that a reporter in the press box was making too much noise. those were pre-computer days so the guy was typing his coverage of the match on an old typewriter. nastase complained twice but when the guy didn't stop, he left the court, stormed up the steps to the press box, snatched the typewriter out of the guys hands and smashed it on the floor. he calmly walked back down to the court and was ready to play again. the crowd gave him a standing ovation. the next day, the press shredded nastase, feeding the "nasty" nicname. my uncle says that in those days, men's tennis was a "gentleman's" game that received very little media coverage, so these outbursts by the top players sounded all the more outrageous. the "bad boy's" brought attention to the game by adding a bit of fire to what most people thought was a boring sport. maybe we owe those early "assholes" a debt of thanks for bringing tennis out of the obscure and into the spotlight. sure, those of us that love tennis appreciate it's elegance but for the casual viewer, when a great player acts like an idiot, it kind of livens it up a bit. don't you think?

It 's kind of funny because I've read here a lot of opinions which were based on one article from only one publication. As far as I know the things were not like they showed it and I had the chance to listen to what Ilie Nastase and the Romanian tennis players had to say. I also saw some articles that are a little bit more explicit of what happened.

Apparently the same arbitrator will come to Sibiu for the Davis Cup Romania vs France

Former tennis star Ilie Nastase resigns as head of the Romanian Tennis Federation
February 12, 2008

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) -- Former star player Ilie Nastase has resigned as head of the Romanian Tennis Federation.

The resignation comes after he was criticized for spending too much money on a Davis Cup match against France which Romania lost 5-0.

Nastase adds that he's also resigning because he had failed to purchase a building and land for a tennis academy, which had been one of his goals. "I have been defeated by the justice system and the press in Romania," he tells Realitatea TV.

Nastase, a major star in the 1970s and Romania's best player, held the position for eight years.
