Sampras to face Safin in exhibition in San Jose
January 31, 2008

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Pete Sampras will face former world No. 1 player Marat Safin in an exhibition during the SAP Open on Feb. 18.

Safin was granted a wild-card entry into the tournament Thursday. He will start his week by playing the exhibition against Sampras in a rematch of the 2000 U.S. Open final won by Safin in straight sets. Safin has won four of his seven career matches against Sampras.

Sampras, who retired after winning his record 14th major singles title at the 2002 U.S. Open, spent the past two summers playing in World Team Tennis events and participated on a limited basis this year on the senior circuit formed by former rival Jim Courier.

Sampras played a series of exhibition matches against Roger Federer late last year, winning the final of the three matches. Sampras will play Federer again at Madison Square Garden in New York on March 10.

Safin will play in San Jose for the second straight year. He lost in the quarterfinals last year to Benjamin Becker of Germany.

those are exhibitions, i wouldn't be surprised if pete wins. everybody beat him back then and some multiple times. he surely wouldn't stand a chance anymore nowadays against the top 10. exhibitions are exhibitions though.

It's funny that you say that when your avatar is a picture of the parents of a player who isn't as nearly as talented as Safin. No matter how many Grand Slam titles Djokovic may win, he will never have Safin's talent or beautiful strokes. It's obvious that you only like a player when he's winning, and not because of the way he plays.
I have nothing against Djokovic, and I think he deserved to win the Aussie Open, but you should be more respectful towards Safin, because he is a champion.

Great answer, I can tell you're very smart. For the people who actually have a brain, I was just saying that people should be more respectful with Grand Slam champions. Everybody knows that Safin isn't an "average" player. You don't win two Grand Slam titles (beating both Sampras and Federer) by chance.
I wasn't trying to insul Djokovic, I just think he's not as talented as Safin. But he won a Grand Slam title, he beat Federer, and I'd never say he's "average". That's all.

Don't mind that Allure, the guy is a complete idiot.

People don't show respect to slam champions enough, or even players who were highly ranked or so forth. Same will happen with Djokovic in 6 years time when he is on the decline although he won't have half the injuries Safin has ran in to.

Safin withdraws from San Jose, Hass to face Sampras
February 12, 2008

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Marat Safin withdrew from the upcoming SAP Open because of a stress fracture in his right leg and stomach flu.

Safin missed last weekend's Davis Cup tie for Russia against Serbia. He had been scheduled to play an exhibition next Monday against Pete Sampras to start the tournament. Tommy Haas will replace Safin in that match.

Fernando Gonzalez and Juan Martin Del Potro withdrew Monday from the San Jose tournament with injuries.
