A 17 year old player, who is ranked #1488, wins a top-50 player in his very first challenger level match. Pretty impressive!

Has anyone seen this young guy playing before? I just wonder what is his playing style.

I've never seen him but he is very tall so obviously has a big serve but I've read that his footwork is quite good, better than Karlovic or Isner  His favourite player: Federer

An incredible achievement by Janowicz to beat a player ranked 1430 places above him :worship:.

He has played only two Futures in career. Pretty impressive win for a boy who has just earned $318 so far.

Just like Voo said - Janowicz can be compared to the ones of Isner or Karlovic with better footwork. I haven't seen him too, but from what I read it is just like that.

Doesn't sound like a fix to me. Simply talented young player with very big serve playing in front of a supportive home audience giving it his all against established veteran for who this wasn't really a very big match. I doubt Mahut wanted to lose but on the otherhand, clearly Janowicz would have wanted to win much more.

It looked like a nasty fix. All the people who praise Janowicz will see what Stakhovsky will do to him tomorrow.

Mahut used to be one of my favourite players. Not anymore. Seriously,I lost the respect for this person.

It's great that a Polish player makes such an impressive debut, but it's so sad the circumstances are like this. So much I would prefer it happened after a true fight. Mahut didn't even pretend. Sorry to disappoint all of you who think the junior is so amazingly good.

Well, I've seen Janowicz play and he isn't as bad as you're making it seem. :p

He still very much has a junior game, but he's also got some talent. You don't make the junior US Open final being a hack.

I've just read an interview with him after beating Mahut. What a simple boy :haha:

Q: Do you have an object that brings you luck?

Janowicz: A computer (laugh). I think about it and it helps.

Q: Do you think about some computer games?

Janowicz: Counter-strike (laugh).

If it's going to be a quick game, it's only because JJ finished playing past midnight. I don't care Mahut fixed that. It's his problem. Big win, anyway.

^ Exactly. Mahut saved double mini-match point at 4:4 in the second set and won a game at 2:4 in the third set after saving BP with 5 or 6 deuces. Even it was a fix, it wasn't a nasty fix, Mahut could have lost quicker.

Mahut may be a good player, but he is hardly the most reliable (for getting consistent, good results), and he isn't exactly a world beater. Obvioxusly I'm not going to begin to argue Nathi's point, but if I did't know better, I'd say people are over-reacting a little. ;)

Yeah, two years ago he lost to Dlouhy and also won a set there so it looked like a fight on paper.

In fact, the Frenchie was rushing the ballkids and even took a cloth from them and started to clean the court himself, because he was in hurry for a plane. Three sets against an eventual tournament winner nevertheless - it doesn't look like a thrown match at all to those who didn't see it.

I know that the match against Janowicz was taped and will be sent to ATP. Of course nothing will happen to him.

As for JJ and his abilities, the US Open junior finalist and a top ten junior player does have a talent obviously. The thing is with the game he presented he would have lost to any random player from the quallies, including Grzegorz Panfil.

Why didnt he lose the second set 6-7 if he had a plane to catch?

It's interesting for me too. Janowicz had two BP's at 4:4 in the 2nd set, Mahut could served a double fault at one of those two occasions and lose 4-6 4-6

The plane thing was 2 years ago.

This year he is still here. He plays doubles today at 8 p.m.

Anyway. I am really a person who doesn't seek the fixes at all the controversial matches. But if I happen to see something live and know some insider things (I work each year at this tournament) then I can have my opinions on things; and it's understandable they are different to the opinions of the people who don't know anything.

I'd suggest to finish the topic.

Mahut also lost suspiciously against Hartfield last year indoors as well. Dodgy player IMO.

nathii, please, u'r polish, and u should at least pretend that u'r happy for him... one thing that i can say about mahut is that he tends to get really nervous at crucial points. I haven't seen the match, but i can imagine what was going through his head when some random guy started the match with an ace..and then hit 16 more.. he had nothing to lose, the pressure was on the frenchman.. he just couldn't handle it, which doesn't surprise me..

Now I won't talk about Mahut, but about Janowicz :)

He's a really nice, spontaneous kid. He isn't a choker, but he fights also when the situation is bad. We already know this from the US Open last year, where he was coming back even when a break down in the last set. This is a great advantage in tennis and a new thing in Polish ATP tennis (Kubot :tape: ). Unfortunately, abilities don't match the potential yet. Jerzy played both matches with the stomach muscles injury, and he arrived here with a tight injury. His errors are sometimes huge, but everything is possible to be improved. I hope that the head that seems strong prevents him from becoming the second Gawron (great junior and nothing else). Stakhovsky played his worst match at the tournament today, but a few shots from Jerzy were delicious. Of course I am looking for more. Maybe the next year.

the difference between janowicz and other great polish juniors is that he has a big weapon - his serve.. that's why he can be better than koniusz or gawron. In fact, he should be better..:).. i certainly hope so..;) btw, nathii, how's wroclaw..?u can pm me if u dont want everybody to know..:P
