PARIS -- Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will make his Davis Cup debut for France in a first-round match against Romania next month.

Tsonga, who burst into the limelight with his run in Melbourne, was called up on Tuesday by captain Guy Forget to play singles alongside France No. 1 Richard Gasquet in the Feb. 8-10 tie in Sibiu, Romania.

Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement, losing finalists of the Australian Open doubles final, will play doubles.

The 22-year-old Tsonga knocked out three top-10 players, among them Gasquet and world No. 2 Rafael Nadal, on his way to the Australian Open final, which he lost to Serbia's Novak Djokovic on Sunday.

"Being able to represent France is a dream come true," Tsonga, who climbed 20 places up to
18th in the world rankings, told a news conference.

All,

I read on yesterday that Tsonga plans on moving to Switzerland where several other French players live. Is it a tax free country?

All,

Thanks. Below is the article. He probably put in his paperwork on Monday. LOL! I wonder if he did it so quickly to avoid paying the tally to France out of his windfall? I think I know the answer. LOL!

All,

I read on yesterday that Tsonga plans on moving to Switzerland where several other French players live. Is it a tax free country? It's not "tax free", but they just have to pay a certain amount of taxes, whatever they earn, and it's outrageously few compared to what they would pay in France. Swiss articles were saying yesterday Tsonga would have to pay only 40.000-70.000 CHF taxes a year (Le Matin (http://www.lematin.ch/pages/home/actu/suisse/actu_suisse__1?contenu=369848)).
He actually signed the papers during the Australian Open, he didn't waste time.

Some of them, like Mauresmo, Bartoli, Santoro, Clément, really live there, at least partly, but others (like Gasquet and Monfils) are just having an address in Switzerland for tax purposes. I mean, Tsonga is hiring a small studio apartment in the middle of nowhere, so it's pretty obvious he doesn't intend to live there.

They all "move" to Switzerland because French people can't benefit from the "tax exile" in Monaco.

La Rippe is not "the middle of nowhere" :fiery: that's quite a good place for fishing actually... :o :p

i'm in dire straits as well, my cable box has been kaput for a few months and i barely even saw any Aussie Open apart from BBci matches

think Sky shows the DC games then TMS events, british eurosport shows Dubai and loadsa WTA tennis.

It's slightly surprising that Romania hasn't opted for an indoor claycourt like some other nations have done. Probably a funding/logistics issue. A claycourt would be much better for Hanescu and Pavel (I believe Tsonga hasn't played on clay due to injury concerns).

VERY strong team there, especially if all guys are in-form. Can see France going far this year...they should get past Romania; they're capable of getting 3 points from singles vs USA; a fast indoor court could help them get the better of Spain in the SF.

Bonne chance!

Jo is better than Paulo. ;)

At least he knows how to smile...Paulo has always been grumpy when I've seen him in person. :ras:

These two are likely to jostle for DC places...I mean, I'd rate Tsonga over Mathieu on all surfaces except clay. I'm quite keen to see how Jo will do over the European clay swing.

If he can beat nadal on a slow hard court, I think he'll have his number on clay as well. Good luck Tsonga

Let's hope Russia is off the table before we are due to meet them .. it's been three years now I believe.
Mind you Tsonga just beat Youzhny at AO .. we've got a chance :)
