Well done Escopeta on reversing the result from last year at Vina, though leading 5-0 in the 3rd, there was the possibility of another monster choke like in 2007.

Time to win some more matches on tour.

It was an incredible & long match, Congrats to Roitman, He played great and fought for everything.
Well, Nicolas, ..showed a really promising tennis, such a tough luck,
Roitman tried to choke again after being 5-0, 30-00* and Nico started to believe but then a couple of winners did the job.

1st set started great for Nico, He actually had 2-0 and 3 BPS [0-40], but since then Roitman stepped up and then They went toe to toe until the TB.

In the 2nd set, Massu started playing poorly which helped Escopeta to keep his hopes alive, got a break and served for the set at *5-4, then nerves collapsed, Massu pushed him to TB and a some stupid balls played by Nico mixed with great shots from Escopeta made him win the 2nd set.
The 3rd set was all about Roitman playing awesome tennis, and Nico sadly not playing that agressive anymore, Roitman served for the match at *5-1, but DEJA VU!, Nico broke, played some nice shots until Escopeta closed it at 6-3

Good match over-all, Congrats to both.

Massu is unique with all these matches lasting more than 3 hours  But since last year he has been losing the most of those marathon matches :awww:

massu cant rely on his forehand alone now because he cant get around it as much as he use to. So his backhand which imo, has gotten worse these past few years, get abused.

massu is an asshole so I am glad he lost.

Nicely done by Escopeta, for coming through a gruelling encounter, and avoiding a monster choke in the last set.
He'll take on Ventura in the 2nd round.

When you start losing regularly to Roitman in your best surface, it's time to worry. I think Massu will be out of top 90 now, right? If Capdeville wins a couple of rounds, he could be the new #2 chilean...

I believe that he will be out of the top 90. And it has been time to worry for awhile now - for about two years.

And right now, Nico has more problems than whether or not he's #2 or #3 Chilean player. Paul never will be more than a low ranked player.

The question is whether Nico can find a way back. I think the answer is 'no' based on a number of reasons that I'm not going into on GM.

The whole thing is sad - I thought he had potential to be a consistent top 30 player. But it hasn't worked out that way. And he works hard, it's not from laziness - he just can't put it together on court.

Good job Sergio. Beating one of the biggest jerks in tennis. It never ceases to piss me off when Massu will look at like 50 balls between points. Hopefully, he's finished.
