This was only Cuevas's 2nd ever match, and first ever victory, in the main draw of a tour level event, so well done to him.
At least Coria got plenty of time on the court, and won a set.

Yes, I agree, we have to look at the positive thing of the match. One set won, it's, at least, a sign of some improvement. Keep improving Guillermo! :yeah:

I'm not too unhappy with this result, I was expecting a straight set loss so :D.

Also, he wasn't broken every 2nd service game.

Coria holds Beijing dream

Clay-courter hopes confidence problem is behind him

Guillermo Coria is determined to represent Argentina at the Beijing Olympics after returning from a lengthy injury absence. The former French Open runner-up last played on the ATP Tour in August 2006 but has since been sidelined by a shoulder injury. The injury was related to a crisis in confidence which saw him commit a large number of double-faults, but the clay-court specialist believes both problems are now in the past. A nine-time winner on tour and a former world number three, Coria was also hit by a three-month suspension for inadvertently taking nandrolone in 2001.

Now he is back in action in Chile this week and hopes a successful return will be enough to secure his passage to China in August.

Stressed

"I needed to stop," he said. "My head was very tired, I was very stressed after so many years on the circuit. I was unwilling to wake up and train.

"The doping case and the shoulder surgery made me be without confidence when playing. Now I'm trying to return to the circuit to enjoy it.

"I don't know if the confidence is back to play at a good level - but I'm very close to achieving that. When I finally do it, I will have my best level.

"I will play the tournaments I like to play, at which I am comfortable.

"I need points and I would like to do my best to reach the Olympic Games, something I have never played.

"I want to quit this sport in the best way."

good result and match for Coria

"I'm very happy with my performance," said Coria. "I believe my real comeback started today. The serve was much better. I did serve a few double faults but they were not out by much, different from before when I made ugly double faults.

"I need to win a few matches to get back my confidence. My goal for this season is to play the most matches as possible and for next year to be back in the Top 10."

though he lost it was a good test for him...
he was 6-4 4-2 down 15-40 serving and he fought like before to win 2nd set... the match lasted more than 2 hours... good luck for him in sauipe

As others said, the fact that the match was so close, and the fight he gave esp. in the second set are promising signs. Hopefully he'll now accept the WC from Buenos Aires and have another good match (ir hopefully two) there.

To us Guille fans this feels like a tournament victory..a set won! Incredible...Now he just needs to draw Gaudio and he'll win a match! Actually if they faced each other now it'd probably be just as dramatic as RG 2004..but with the right winner.

He won a set and fought?!!

Well, I'm quite happy with that, that's 1 small step for Guille, 1 giant leap to Olympic Games, so to speak. |: Hopefully his progress will continue. :)

I am happy that he has a goal [Olympics]that will keep him playing even when he loses. If anyone deserves to get their game back , it's him. I hope he makes it to Cincy MS this year.

Cuevas can play though, hes going to be in the top 100 and probably the top 50 pretty soon

Definately. He was one of best players on the challenger circuit last season, and I was impressed with what I saw of him. Hopefully he can start to establish himself on the main circuit and continue to climb up the rankings this year.

Its amazing to how much support he is getting now when he was seriously hated a few years ago.

I guess like Hewitt, when you fall of the map, people dont seem to bash you as much.

10dfs in 15 serving games, nothing to be proud of but definitely an improvement. The big question is whether the second serves which went in were very conservative and easy to attack, because of the fear of the df.

:retard:  What about top 60 for a start?
And 10 doubles in match like this is more than "a few".

I hope he comes back with at least winning some good matches.

Have we forgotten just how talented this guy is? Top 10 is a realistic goal, providing he can nail down his serve.
