Some more applause from me. Even though I wanted Nole to win, I admire and respect Jo-Wilfried tremendously. He is a magnificant new talent - and seems like a genuine nice guy too. I wish him a successful, injury-free 2008 and a Grand Slam of his own before too long :)

You won't see an awful lot of that if you attack Nole as being "a brick wall" with "not much talent", will you? :help:

Absolutely :D Tsonga had an amazing two weeks and took out a whole bunch of impressive players. He rose up 20 places in the rankings this week alone and if he can keep up this kind of play, another 10 is not out of the question. :)

Well done dude :yeah:

I wish the best for this guy in 2008 and beyond. It has been so nice to see him mature as a player and also improve his fitness. He has been a joy for me to watch this tournament and I really hope that he just takes good things from his run here and does not fade away. He has the talent to be a real factor in men's tennis and I hope he is.

All,

Tsonga is a joy to watch. It is something isn't it - that sort of out of nowhere - he has touched us so? I think Baggy was the last one that did so w/his OZ final in 2006.

I too am reminded of Marat when watching T-Man play as some declared on other threads. Here's hoping he stays injury free and spirited.

If Jo Will improves his fitness...and keeps working at improving his backhand and strategy, I honestly believe we will be looking at a future #1. What impressed the most was that he was dictating play against a player with the firepower of Djokovic. Yes, he should have moved into the forecourt more. Yes, his fitness betrayed him. Yes, he experienced some nerves. But you know what: the game is there. The groundstrokes are there. The serve is there. The volleys are there. The athleticism is there. Mark my words. He will be at the Masters Cup (barring injury)...and he could be the new face of tennis.

The top three may be in denial, but the truth is that this was Tsonga's arrival. With power and grace, and movement sublime, I'll reach the top spot...its just a matter of time. Enjoy your title...your future's not bleak. But please don't forget: you're still one Aussie Open behind Kriek. When I take the top spot, I'll remember this night. When a man is his first final, gave you a most awful fright. Now that I know what it takes to win, with serve and more forehand, the top's where I'll end.

My own view is that yes he has all the weapons but his game can be a little bit high risk still. If he can consistently reproduce that game he will go far. If he can't, his results are always going to be up and down - he cuts his margins on shots pretty fine sometimes.

However, I wish him well - I especially hope he doesn't catch the Melbourne Curse and struggle for the rest of the year now.

I doubt he will ever get any higher than he is right now or reach another slam final.

It was fun watching him play though, at least against Nadal. He gave me quite the scare with Nole. ;)

All,

A few more thoughts.

Jon Wertheim also mentioned the Marat comparison in his mailbag.

Jo - W won $686,000.00, give or take a few dollars. Yikes! That money will go along way into developing his career further, paying for travel, paying his coach, treating his parents and brother to nice gifts (Paying parents back a little), saving some and buying a new sports car. LOL! Look at me spending and saving the man's prize money.

He'll be 18 in the rankings. No movement for the first six players. James moves to number 9.

Tsonga should also be proud because it was his first singles' final. He needs to try to develop that net game more along the lines of what he was able to produce against Nadal. I didn't see his other matches - but Youzy is no slouch. What makes my heart smile is to think of how close the French Tennis Fed is. Most likely, many vets will have some tips/input for him. Pioline was in the stands last night.
