Tennis in the middle of nowhere.....

Today I went to the tournament in Rosmalen. Itís a bit far from where I live so I left home early. Play started at noon and I left home at 9 a.m. since I also still had to buy a ticket. Iím glad I left early cause I didnít arrive till noon. I was surprised to see the place was so big. There were 5 courts and another five courts for practice.

The first thing I did when coming in was check the practice courts. Nadia Petrova was practising with Mary Pierce and there were two other girls practising on the same court. On the court next to them was Michaela Krajicek with some young girl, whom I assume was Carly Gullickson. For some reason I saw Jana Novotna on the practice courts. On the practice courts on the other side you had Popp and Andreev. I stuck around for a while and also saw Ancic for a few minutes. I took a pic of Barbara Schett when she arrived and then I moved on.

I went to Court 1 where Youzhny was playing Dupuis. It was 4-3 when I walked in. Dupuis wasnít serving that great and made a lot of errors. He lost the first set 6-4. His coach was sitting close to me and I heard him encourage him in French all the time. On my other side was the Russian camp. They were less noisy. At one moment the coach shouted something at Misha and he replied in Russian. A silence followed so I assume he said something bad. Andreev watched some of the first set. In the second set Dupuis had a few breakpoints and couldnít convert any of them. Misha was playing well. He was aggressive and took the set 6-0.

After that match I wanted to see Hrbaty, but he had just lost when I got there. Since there werenít any interesting matches going on, I went to the practice courts again. Davydenko was practising and Robredo, who was waiting for his match to start, was being stretched by someone. That stretching looks mighty sexy I have to say. I took a pic with him and moved on.

I walked further to go and take a pic of Gisela Dulko. Canas was sitting on the stairs reading a book, while waiting to enter the stands with a girl, who is probably his girlfriend. Jankovic was cruising and was leading 4-1 when I came in. Her coach was sitting in front of me and her father behind me. They were taking plenty of notes. This match was boring in my opinion and I left after having taken pics of both.

Robredo is the man I wanted to see so I went to his doubles match. Iíve heard a lot about Karsten Braasch and now Iíve finally seen THE SERVE with my own eyes. Words canít describe it lol. The match was entertaining and you could see Tommy was the better doubles player. Braasch made a few more errors. Etlis-Rodriguez are a good doubles team, but one of the two, donít remember who, had a terrible serve. Iíve seen a few double faults in the first set. Braasch-Robredo lost the first set and I moved on again.

I spotted Rainer practising with another German and Karlovic was on the same court with an Asian guy. Rainerís coach was sitting by the side smoking and telling Rainer what to do. That looked funny. I took a few pics and continues my stroll around the grounds.

Michaela Krajicek was on centre court. She played against Schaul and lost the first set. Michaela was making too many errors, perhaps because she was nervous. She also seemed to be slow on the court. If she could cut down on the errors, I see her having a bright future. She did come up with a few nice shots, but the finishing touch was missing. She reminded me of Dinara Safina, cause she also walks like her brother. In the second set she asked for the trainer. It took like 5 minutes before someone came on court and she was taken away. It took too long so I moved on.

I went to the practice courts again where Coria was practising with Popp. Alexander was wearing the same sweaty shirt as in his other practice session. Meanwhile I found out Michaela retired cause she fainted on court or something. She was standing on the baseline till she suddenly fell. Popp and Coria played a few games. Coria was stuck at the baseline as usual. In those 30 minutes that I watched them he came to the net once. Afterwards his physical trainer stretched him for like 15 minutes and then he left. On the court next to them Sluiter and Verkerk were practising. On the other side Nadia was with her coach and Loit came out later on.

On court 1 Andreev was playing against Wessels. They were already in the second set when I came in. Igor was playing well and was aggressive. Wessels seemed very frustrated. At one point he yelled in Dutch: ďCant the damn ball bounce well for a change!Ē There were some nice winners, but the match was over quickly.

Back on the practice courts I saw Hrbaty, who already lost and Jankovic, who won pretty quickly.

There was only one match I wanted to see on centre court and that was Vliegen-Verkerk. I had a good seat and enjoyed the atmosphere. Both players were serving well and started pretty equal. In the third game at 15 all a bird flew over the court and it took two minutes before it flew away lol. At 4-4 the first breakpoints were for Vliegen. Verkerk saved them and after saving some more breakpoints in the coming games in went to a tie-break. Vliegen was the better player in the first set, but Verkerk was better in the tie-break and took the first set 7-6 (7-2). Verkerkís serve was above 210 km/h regularly, but he also hit a few double faults. Vliegen doesnít a really fast serve, but good placement. He went to the net sometimes, something Verkerk clearly wasnít doing. Martin canít really play on grass from what Iíve seen. His serve alone wonít save him on the surface. One thing that amazed me was how bad Martin judged certain balls. It happened THREE times that he thought a ball was going out, but was in. Easy points for Vliegen ;)

I left for one final walk around the courts after that first set since I had a long way back home. Verdasco was still playing and I quickly took a pic of him. I also saw two games of Llodraís doubles match. I wanted a pic of him as well.

There was only one bus per hour that passed the stadium (Rosmalen is really in the middle of nowhere) and the only hour it didnít go was 7 p.m. I had to wait another hour for the bus and then take the train. I decided to call my parents who were kind enough to drive 70km and pick me up.

I had a great day and will love to go again next year, but only if I have my driverís license.

Other tidbits

I didn't recognise Andreev at first. I saw him everywhere, including at Misha's match and thought he was german. I know there are a few cute germans on tour and thought he was one of them.

My arms are burn't cause it was very warm today.

I saw Eltingh and Haarhuis there.

The place looks very friendly and the player's lounge was far from the practice courts so you see players walking EVERYWHERE.

Schalken held a press conference in the afternoon. Plenty of kids asked him questions.

I asked a geezer to take a pic of me and Misha. I guess he had never seen a digital camera before cause he held the camera right in front of his eye cause he thought he had the lens in front of him. I told him where to hold the camera and how to take a pic lol.

Tommy ass Robredo rocks my world.

Some grandma thought she saw Paradorn practising. It was either Paes or Buphati.

I recognised Novotna, while the geezers didn't.

Hmm... Schalken would seem to be screwed, bearing in mind he has to play Ancic and then Andreev, both of whom beat him on fast courts last year. Heck, Andreev beat him 3 and 1 in Moscow, and is obviously playing well again at the moment.

Thank you Maratski for giving us your story on what happened during your visit. That's how it should be in this forum! LOL. When someone goes to a tournament, it would be interesting to hear about the details. I always do that somehow and I plan on doing that during the MTS Toronto this summer! ;)

Mrs B, I was visited Gstaad briefly last year, the week after the tournament. I was in the Montreux area for the jazz festival. What a beautiful region, I'd move there in a shot (if I could speak a word of French hehe!).

We once went to Montreux for the jazz fest, stayed up in the mountains behind (Porte de Soleil) to spend the night, then proceeded to Gstaad taking the back roads, then returnd to Bern through Interlaken and it was great.
But Montreux is a good place to hang out during the fest, oder? that lake view is so pretty.

I love reading fan reports and that's why in return I also share my experiences with you people.

The other reason of course is that the people I know in real life don't like tennis at all and I just need to share my joy ;)
