Why is the men's final played at night?

One of the characteristics of the AO that has been noted for years: the heat of the Australian summer. To me, fitness is required and rewarded...as well it should be. Years before, the men's final was played during the day. Why is the final now played under the lights? It takes fitness out of the equation...and, for a slam, this should not be the case. Any opinions on this matter? Or information on why the AO tourney officials have done this?

Fitness doesn't just come in the form of climate.

I like it, it's 9.30 am where I live. A nice time to wake up and watch a GS final. :p

As far as I know it's all to do with international TV, advertising, marketing, TV rights etc. Afternoon matches in Australia are about 1.00am in Europe which means pretty much no one here can watch them, and with the 3 top male players in the world all being European that is a potentially big audience to lose. By switching to a night match, more people in Australia can watch on TV as they will have finished work (yes, may people will be working in shops etc on a Sunday there), plus all of Europe can watch at a reasonable time on Sunday morning (8.30am in UK and 9.30am everywhere else). I'm not sure about US time zones but I believe the western USA is something like 9 or 10 hours behind UK, so it is still only 10.00pm or 11.00pm there so many people can still stay up to watch. There was a BBC article about it somewhere, which I am trying to find at the moment.

Exactly  East coast USA is pretty much the only time zone for which this time is completely inconvenient :rolls:

:awww: Sorry East Coast people  I spent years getting up at 3.00am or 4.00am or something for the AO final, so tomorrow will be bliss for me. Crawl out of bed at about 8.20am, make a cup of tea, and collapse on the sofa to start watching!

2:30 AM here, don't know whether I should stay up and watch live or just watch the encore at 11:00 AM.

Yes, I hate to wake up 3:30 AM in the morning

If Donald Young play the Final, I would wake up.

Forgot about it.

I like that it's a night match. Even though it means I usually stay up all night to watch the final, it's become a bit of a tradition:shrug:

I'd like the US Open to consider having the men's final at primetime and moving the women's back to the day. But, that's probably not possible considering the final is held on a Sunday.
