Novak's father?

Have just come over from GM where (surprise, surprise) Nole and his entire family, plus his coach, his manager and Serbia in general are getting serious grief.

However, particular venom seems to be directed at his father, and several Serbian posters concur, saying Djokovic Senior is arrogant and generally disliked in Serbia, and that such dislike is in danger of spreading to Novak. Is anyone here in a position to comment please, ideally with specific examples.

Thanks in advance.

I'll see if I could manage to find some examples, but I'm afraid it's not a matter of few specific moments or something. It's more like his entire attitude, arguments with the tennis association, arrogance etc.

But it is true, people in Serbia kinda dislike Srdjan (I can't speak for every individual here but in general)

But no matter if one likes them or not, I think it's not fair to pick on his family as a reason to bash Nole.

Very true. I'm journalist and I know, believe me. Arrogant man.

Thanks. Is this a recent thing then - ie just over the few months - or has he always been the same?

As you say, I'll be deeply worried if Novak suffers as a result but this is already happening it seems.

He can be very annoying and scary.

Fortunately we have Djole's cuteness to balance it. :D

Well it kinda follows Novak's success. The better Nole is, the worse Srdjan gets. So, it is not a new thing but he was, lets say, more careful when Nole wasn't this high in rankings.

Nole is almost a hero in Serbia (too much maybe, but it's like it is) and heroes have more credit to do and say stupid stuff. So it really takes talent and many 'wrongs' to make people dislike someone so close to Novak.

It's gotten worse recently with his arguments with city officials over the location of a tennis center, and wanted to be consulted over everything in our tennis association with threatening Nole will not play for DC etc.etc.
Kinda sad, actually.

Bad rumor alert: did Novak's father really give Roger the thumbs down when Roger left the court? I've seen several comments about this around MTF. I hope it's not true.

To be honest he did show the thumbs down BUT.... it was waaaaaaay after Federer left the court and it was while he was talking with the people from the box.
He showed thumbs up and then thumbs down. I have no idea why and what it meant but I'm almost 100% certain it wasn't when Federer was leaving the court.

It wasn't when Fed left the court - it was way after. Djokovic Snr was talking to those behind him...it looked like just a gesture as part of a conversation.

Thanks Kirkicica and others for your replies. Sorry to hear this - has Nole made any comment one way or the other?

Guess he'd stay loyal though no matter what - sounds like his family have done an awful lot for him over the years.

Yes, he always says how close they are and how they did do a lot for him. i believe that since he/they was on their own, no association to help and nothing from the officials. So he will remain loyal. He never said anything on that topic (not that I'm aware of) but I'm sure he has the idea whats going on and I HOPE they somehow solve it between themselves.

p.s It did look like a gesture as part of conversation, true.

Srdjan is disliked in Serbia primarily for fighting with authorities about the new tennis complex. I think the story is you have to obtain a lease from the government, the proper way (not sure what this entails) but Srdjan simply demands that he be given the land cause his son is somewhat of a national hero.

There are other reasons including his arrogance.

Having said that I don't think the thumbs down was directed at Roger at all. He looks like he's talking to someone about the match..

:scared: I've just heard about his threats that Novak won't play DC or whatever else.

It's like back in the day, it seemed like a funny quote at the time, because he was just getting started, but seeing how it's developed... well... do you remember when he was addressing the UK rumors and said, "Novak will play wherever there are facilities. He will play for Mars if there are proper facilities." He sees his sons as goods he's willing to sell to the highest bidder. I mean, using Novak as a pawn to make himself important is just sad. Novak is patriotic, he is proud of where he's from and I don't see him not playing DC just because daddy says not to. I really don't. I think Nole in the end, would do the right thing.

I was discussing this with some of the girls in the thread one night. Nole is a man now. He can make choices in the end. I worry most about the two little ones, and how they will be used.

That's exactly what I am worrying. It will be very difficult for Nole to rebel because of his 2 younger brothers who he obviously adores very much.

I hope novak makes the right choice though, and instills those same qualities into his brothers, since he's such a huge role model for them.

one thing though. ditch the manager :p

I don`t like him either. I don`t like any of "tennis fathers" (Sharapov, Dokic, Williams, Graf, Pierce). It`s interesting that most of them are from WTA, I think Nole is onlyone from ATP whose whole family watch his every match (ok with slams, but they watch EVERY match). Nole is not 18 anymore, Srdjan and Dijana could have their own business, and if Marko and Djole want to be players they have to spent more time on practicing than watching older brother`s matches.

I don't think that's the case. In this (http://www.blic.co.yu/sports.php?id=1242) article he clearly states otherwise.

That's how I understand it. And I'm pretty sure nothing would stop Novak from playing. I think they're empty threats... but who knows.
