Wilander: Tsonga is the greatest tennis player in the world....

It is so over the top I hardly can believe it is actually true. It is in swedish but I will translate it to english.

Here are some of the things he says:

"He is the greatest player in the world. I have never seen anyone play better than he did"

"He has only faced great opponents all the time and played incredibly good. I believed on him even against Nadal. He played flawless and destroyed the spaniard. Every shot he made in the match was perfect"

"Tsonga played incredible tennis and read NAdal completely. At the same time it is because it is so easy to read Nadal when the balls are heavy"

"It is his 5th grand slam. He hasnt sat in the locker room listening to stories about Federer and Nadal, he is completely unafraid. He doesnt care about who they are"

Answering if this could be a onetime wonder:

"No, he is this good. I was completely stunned after the match. I have been waiting for someone who plays like this"

"He is incredibly strong on his serve. He is also a tactical player with a steady and heavy baseline game"

"He is top 3 right now. If he stays healthy for the rest of the season he will be ranked top 5 at the end of this year"

Question about his chanses against Federer:

"Tsonga has better physics, tactics and technique than Federer. Federer has history and that counts. But without history Tsonga is better. I hope he can face Federer to meassure how good he is"

Was Mats drunk again? He tends to imbibe and then make pronouncements.

I like Tsonga- and hope the overpraise stops. Praise is due, and if he plays up to his potential fairly consistently- he could be a great presence in the top levels of the sport.

But don't overhype and overload the guy already. It will just create people wanting him to fail- cause that's how these things go.

HA. tennis players have opinions like everyone else.

of course if he'd said something people here agree with, e.g. Roger is the greatest ever, I will **** his **** any day of the week,

everyone here would say see? Wilander who's a pro says this, then other people who have never even played pro tennis have no right to question Roger.

But of course now he's on drugs.

just shows you that tennis idiocy is not just restricted to MTF :yeah:

It seems ol wil here is forgeting last year Nadal suffered an even worst loss at the hands of Nalbandian (bagel) and then an even worst one at the hands of Roger in Shangai, no bagel there but it ended in less than an hour, faster than Nalbandian.

Of course this is 3 sets but give me a break, lopsided defeats are a common thing with Rafa now :)

For some reason I consider the Fed loss even worst, even if Nalby had that bagel and played awesome, Roger finished this in fucking record time and against Nadal (who tends to slow everything down) it's incredible.

yea you are right, this thread is about TsOWNEDga, greatest player who ever lived, lives, will live.

btw, I say he gets owned in straights against Roger in the final. we're used to at least one "jesus fed" performance per slam and he hasn't brought it out this time, he could do it against djoko but if he does i would automaticaly worry because he most likely will play the final like crap. If he plays djokovic like crap and still wins (the way he does often) then Tsonga has no chance in the final as Roger's best performance in the tournament will be on the final.

You wouldnt understand the meaning of that poetry in any language. But to make it short it is about a piece of sugar drowning in coffee, massgraves of cigarettes and about a drop of coffee taking its revenge on Mats.

What he was saying in Swedish television? I don't understand a single word :(

The first (and most retarded one) was a poem about how he is in a café drinking coffee. First, he philosophises about the two lumps of sugar that he will shortly drop into his coffee and how they will fight not to melt and how they give their life for his pleasure. Then, he goes on about how the coffee gets splashed as he drops the lumps of sugar into it and how he gets some on his white shirt, resulting in him forgetting about the lumps and how their "lungs are being filled with black coffee". Finally, he rounds it off by noting that there is an ash tray in front of him with five butts in it and that this ash tray is "a mass grave - an unnecessary mass grave".

Bec's Poem

I really don't know where to start
but I definitely know you've captured my heart,
It started that night you called me up,
to see if I'd play in the Starlight Cup
Way back then, little did we know,
That our love for one another could grow and grow,
A text message or two is what kept us in touch
And I want you to know that I love you so much

It wasn't'til late in 2004
That I received another phone call
When we decided to meet,
we went up the street for something to eat,
From that day on I've been by your side
And look at me now,
I am here as your bride!
I used to wish upon a star
that I'd meet the perfect husband
- and here you are!

You're an inspiration to so many including me,
Anyone who's ever met you can count
themselves lucky,
I'm so lucky I've found the one,
Being with you I have nothing but fun,
You are my best friend and my dream come true
And I'm so glad to be sharing all this with you

This is only the start of our dream together,
But I promise to love you until forever
I can't wait to start my life with you,
Just being together, our dreams will come true
I have no doubt I'm glad to be your wife,
And being with me is now a part of your life
I admire you for so many reasons,
I mean look at what happened at the Four Seasons!

We're about to experience the miracle of life,
but always remember I'm so proud to be your wife,
Having a family with you makes me so glad,
I know I'll never get sad,
Thanks so much for choosing me,
By sticking together we'll make a great family

Engaged and then married and now one on the way,
I'll take such good care of you every day,
It's safe to say I'll love you more and more
And marrying you today, I couldn't be more sure.
Rebecca Hewitt! I'm your wife!
I promise you one thing, stick with me and you'll have a bloody good life!

He inteviewed Djokovic on Eurosport immediately after his victory against Federer and he was all happy and his eyes sparkling - you would wonder why if he would like so much to see the duel between Fed and Tsonga

Is it me, or has the tennis world gone completely bonkers? :cuckoo:

Muzza played too passive, allowing Jo the chance to attack; Nadal hit too short, allowing Jo the chance to attack; Don't know about Gasquet and Youzhny, but, from what I've read, it seems that they, too, were too passive/defensive. Thus, there is a clear pattern. As long as Nole hits as deep as he uually does, he should gradually wear Tsonga down. Only if the Frenchman beats him will I even think about giving in to this so-called massive hype. He is a very good player, but not a great one imo.

Youzhny really wasn't passive, just Tsonga played too well.

Willander is just a Federer hater, I knew that from the beggining. NOw it's Tsonga, yestearday it was Nadal etc.

He inteviewed Djokovic on Eurosport immediately after his victory against Federer and he was all happy and his eyes sparkling - you would wonder why if he would like so much to see the duel between Fed and Tsonga

Willander is a faker antipathy towards Federer is all that is fueling him

I'd be happy too if I got to work with Barbara Schett. Plus Wilander usually looks upbeat when conducting interviews, especially during his interview with Federer before the semis.

Hahahaha, anyone who criticises Federer has to be a hater. Hey, you are the one who thinks draws are fixed.

I promise you one thing, stick with me and you'll have a bloody good life!

edited to include a link to a hilarious review of the poem http://www.ausculture.com/archives/001372.html

Priceless! Look at those rhymes:
eat-meet-street
glad-bad, etc...
'Rebecca Hewitt! I'm your wife!
I promise you one thing, stick with me and you'll have a bloody good life!'
what a horror at the end
Thanks, l_mac, didn't know this exists.

Wilander is just too kind for his own good.

He seems pretty intelligent and speaks good English.

Wow. All that praise based on one tourney is too much. Looks like Wilander is driving the Tsonga bandwagon.

Tsonga is amazing though. :inlove:

Yep. He shows up about once every three years. Amazing indeed.

Of course this is 3 sets but give me a break, lopsided defeats are a common thing with Rafa now :)

Wilander is smarter than that. Does he need a job or something? i guess he wants another Frenchie to coach. the deal with Mathieu must be coming to an end.

Tsonga is good but he is not that good.

I am not fan of Tsonga, but as tennis fan I am sad that I will not have the chance to see Tsonga at his peak, at his full potential. Unfortunately he is too injury prone and because of that he will not make tennis history, but if he stayed injury free he would have won some slams.
I don't know if he is injury prone because of lack of training, or because of too much training, but it is sad when injuries are main obstacle.

well he had his chance at the Australian Open. he was not injured and was riding a huge wave of confidence until he ran into a machine from Serbia.

i am not too sure if he is consistent enough to be a contender even for masters events, let alone slams. that Australian Open final appearance may have been a once in a lifetime achievement. If Nadal had any kind of a serve and a return game, it would have been him in the final instead of a #35 ranked player.

After seeing how involved he was during the Mathieu game, i think Mats has a thing for French players.

I would love to see them play each other in wimbledon. I feel Tsonga could be a real challenge for Federer on grass, too bad he wont play this year..

Tsonga's like 80-90 kg right? Very heavy for his height, very injury prone. But he does have a mad as game when he plays well. He's also a very natural volleyer.

True. The Australian Open seems to be the Grand Slam where players make their "once-in-a-lifetime" runs (Baggy, Gonzo, Tsonga, Johansson, Korda, etc.).
