Fitzgerald announces Davis Cup squad

01-23-2008, 08:22 PM
Optus Australian Davis Cup Captain, John Fitzgerald, has announced the line-up that will take on Chinese Taipei in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania first round tie in February.

The team is headed by Australia’s No.1 player Lleyton Hewitt, one of Australia’s most experienced Davis Cup representatives. Also in the team are Chris Guccione, Alun Jones, doubles specialist Paul Hanley and Joseph Sirianni whose excellent form this summer has won him a spot in the squad.

Darren Cahill has been reappointed as Optus Australian Davis Cup coach.

Speaking at a press conference today to announce the team, Fitzgerald said that “we have picked the team we think is best placed to beat Chinese Taipei on their outdoor hard court”.

“We know that they have some good players in the Chinese Taipei squad. They are a dangerous opponent and we will need to play well to win this tie.

“But I am confident we have the form and the players to win. We are all very determined to use this tie to begin our climb back into the World Group.”

For Joe Sirianni the call up was a dream come true. “It’s an absolute honour to be part of the squad and represent Australia,” he said. “It’s a dream come true.”

If Australia wins the tie against Chinese Taipei, the next tie will be played in Townsville in April.

No Luczak, hmmm interesting. I wonder why that is

Yeah, where's Looch?

luczak is playing south america, i wonder what's happened though, if they have let peter do his own thing in south america or asked him and he said no. Would like to know the full story here.

I doubt that Luczak would say no, since he has delared that Davis Cup is his main interest. But you have to have 4 people on the team, Lleyton singles/doubles, Hanley/doubles, gooch/ singles, and 1 more. What is that person going to do? If Luczak was that 4th person, they would never play him anyway (not on this surface, low bouncing, fast hardcourt, indoors). So they probably came to the agreement that it was better for him to go to South America and play on clay, instead of sitting on the bench and wasting 2 weeks like he did in belgium (although that was on clay)

Hopefully the DC team can take home a victory and Luczak have a good run in South America to get his ranking up a little more.

Go Aussies

Still a very surprising omission. It is not like we can afford to rest our players ranked in the top 100! We only have three of them. Luczak seems like a nice fella so I would be surprised if he knocked the selectors back from playing. Nevertheless he could rank up some good points on the clay. Top 50 by years end please Peter!

Is Joe still going? He dropped out of the Chinese challenger...

I hope they play Sirianni instead of Guccione

I agree with you Azza. Joe rocked over the summer.

I hope they play Sirianni instead of Guccione

It's a pritty hard choice you've got Sirianni who got to the semis of Adelaide, then you've got Guccione who made the final of Sydney then theres Alun Jones who made the second round of the Aussie Open which neither Guccione or Sirianni did. I think they'll probably stick with Guccione for the simple fact that he has Davis Cup experience.

Best of luck to all the boys in this tie!
