semis were played during day session last year, should be the same this time.

I heard on Eurosport they both will be played at 7.30 pm.

According to the AO tournament schedule, the Thursday match, i.e. Rafa vs. Tsonga, will be at 7:30 pm (two Ladie's Semis during the day) while the Friday match will start at 3 pm local time.

They make most of their money selling evening tickets when people are not working and can attend in bigger numbers. That would generally be for men's matches, although there are some cases where a particular women's combination would sell well too

If they are not both on the same day, then it makes sense that one is at 3p local time to minimize the difference in "rest" that the eventual finalists will get.
