AO QF: Nadal def. Nieminen 7-5 6-3 6-1

Nadal didn't serve too well and had to save a few BP's here and there, got broken once in the second set, but was solid off the ground, especially the forehand side. Nieminen had 2 SP's in the first set at *5-4 15-40 but couldn't convert. He had a good tactic and was mixing it up nicely but his second serve failed him, again. Nadal into his first hardcourt Slam SF.

That match was ugly as hell. One of those you couldn't drink pretty. And it went beyond 2 hours and seemed to go on and on and on and on (admittedly, a good part of that was completely Rafa's fault). Rafa didn't play terribly, there were some great shots mixed in the mess, and some especially good lobs. But he didn't play all that well, either. If Rafa plays that way in the Semis, no matter who his opponent is, he will, most likely, be killed.

That being said, none of that matters. All that matters is that Rafael Nadal is in the Semi-Finals at the Australian Open. His first ever SF at a hard court GS. And he did it without losing so much as a set.

I said from the beginning that if he got past the QF, the rest would be gravy. And it's true. He could go bomb out in the SF winning only a game or two, or he could fight and go down in a blaze of glory. Or the unthinkable and unlikely could happen, and he could win. This tournament will have been a success either way, IMO.

Awful serving today :sobbing:

 :ras:

He's in the semis, thank God. He'd have been crucified if he hadn't made it with his draw.

Very low 1st serve percentage by his standards.

Hilarious comedy jumping smash in the third game of the third set :haha:

Not that impressive, but not awful. What more could I ask for? :)

Jarkko was playing very well until double set point :( That forehand lob-volley from Rafa at 5:5 (30-30) was technically amazing :worship:

I am glad Nadal finally broke the 4th round/quarter final jinx. Not too happy with his performance today but his form from match to match varies so much that I don't know whether it will be the Rafa who played against PHM or against Niemenen today. Anyways don't care much what happens in the semi. He probably will lose anyway:lol:

Nieminen had all his chances in the first set, after that never in doubt. Solid win for Nadal, but the next match should be his first real test. Congrats on your first HC slam semi, Rafa.

awful serve from rafa.... 5df...... awful...

apart from poor serve, rafa played a solid game. not brilliant but not bad....

hope he can raise his game in the semi, and i m sure he will....

Never in doubt

now lets see him play someone in the Semis who actually knows how to crack a winner twice a game

Jarkko needed to take one of those set points in the first set to make this interesting. It was a good first set from him, but after that he couldn't keep it up. :(

Now it's back to the army for Jarkko and a week in the forrest should be a good way to forget this loss. He'll return to the courts in Marseille.

Rafa needs to play better in the SF to overcome Youzhny or Tsonga.

Congrats on your first hard court semi Rafa- but gosh darn...that was a bit of a snoozer. I am sure it will be the dud of the day. I started rewatching Sunday's episode of The Wire for a bit during the match.

Great point though towards the end when he either got to break point or saved break point.

Spot on.

As far as the match is concerned, the match had moments of sheer all court brilliance...and moments of mental gridlock (on the part of Rafa). Nieminen threw everything he had at Rafa in the first set...and STILL lost. He hit the ball flat and attacked whenever he got the chance...playing MUCH better than did in the previous round. And he still lost the set.

Rafa coasted from there. What pleased me the most (other than being in his first hard court grand slam semi...without losing a set)...was the fact that he withstood an incredible barrage of flat balls (like he will face in the next round)...and survived.

Only negative: the turtle time between points.

I'm surprised at how often Nadal let Nieminen get into his service games. That is not going to fly from here on out.

That was a giant step backwards from his last match. I expect he will do better next time.

Pretty solid match from Nadal and you could tell how worn out Jarkko was physically at the end of the match, and he is one of the fittest guys on tour.
Bearing a major collapse by Nadal, he should be in his first hardcourt Slam final.

I think most here are not giving enough credit to Nadal for the first set. Most players would've not been able to cope with Nieminen's game. Nieminen played the usual game of making life difficult for his opponent and to top it off made tons of great shots up until the last two points of the set.

Most opponents look amateurish when making errors against Nieminen, Rafa looked solid most of the time. A good match for Nadal overall even if Nieminen made things a bit easy for him on the 2nd and 3rd sets. I would actually consider this match the first test that Nadal overcame in this tournament. The other matches won't be like this at all though, so in that regard hard to tell what will happen in the semis.

The driver of the infamous bus that Rosa Parks was riding was named James Blake...that's the most interesting thing about this match. The tennis from Niemenen was horrid.

I felt sorry for Jarkko. He deserved to take a set off Rafa today on effort alone, but as is the case with so many players against Roger and Rafa, he couldn't close it out.

Merton

Jarkko lost his chance when he had a 2nd serve at 5-4*, 15-40 and went for a return winner. Impressive that Nadal managed to win the 1st set, Jarkko was mixing it very well there. The problem is that his 2nd set is ridiculous, it can be exposed on hard courts, that is why Jarkko has better chances against Nadal on clay (indeed he choked being up a set and a break in Barcelona 2006 and he had another close match on clay against Nadal).

Ugh, as much as I hate to admit it, Piggy didn't really have a "cakewalk" draw as some are claiming it. The fact is, that like it or not, he is a top 10 player on all surfaces. I mean, other than drawing Youzhny in R4 how could his draw have been any harder really ? And he's liable to beat him as well in the semis.

Well, he could have had Youzhny 4th round or Berdych. And Blake/Ferrer in the quarters. That would have been tricky. Even if Roddick had made the quarters it would have been more difficult. But he can only play whoever makes it through, so ..

i do think nadal played a very solid match despite a few loose points. he is the favorite to be in the final barring an outstanding performance from youzhny.

01-22-2008, 06:44 AM
I don't think Berdych is the hard court giant his fans make him out to be. On an average day (by which I mean not including career best matches as played by Tipsarevic and Kohlshcrieber) the only ones I would favor to beat Piggy even on hards would be Federer, Djokovic and Roddick. Youzhny, Blake and Ferrer maybe a 50/50 shot which is pretty good. Like I said, even on heard court the pig is hard to beat.

Really? Well, as a fan, I'd rather see him play Roddick or Nole than Blake or Youzhny. Berdych isn't a hardcourt giant, but he's not a fun match-up for Rafa. I don't think Nadal would always lose, especially not in a Slam, but I don't turn cartwheels when I see Berdych near Nadal in a draw.

Good job Rafa, easy enough.

Time to step it up big time in the SF or you're on your way out though.

And perhaps think about starting a match quicker, you can't keep getting away with these first sets, Tsonga/Youzhny will take advantage of what Troicki, Simon and Nieminen all should've done.

It's something that can help for his next match.
