Ferrero defeats Nalbandian 6-1 6-2 6-3

What we saw in Madrid and Paris was like an oasis in the middle of the desert.

After those Master Series victories I thought we might be able to start talking about King David, but it's back to Pig David

Nalbandian is fat and slow again. Ferrero is having a field day with him.

If he gets a doping control he'll get a 2 year suspension for an excess of Twinkies and Milky Ways in his blood.

So much talent, but so much glutony to go with it.

What a shame

No chance for Nalbandian today. Most people will talk about how bad he played but, truth be told, Ferrero is on fire.

First time Nalbandian is out before the fourth round in Melbourne since his debut in 2002. The streak had to end some time, but it's surprising it ended this year.

Nalbandian playing very poorly + Juan Carlos Ferrero playing exceptionally gives you a scoreline like this.

Abject performance from Nalbandian - considering the end of last year, really quite a shocking display.

Nalbandian looked slow and lethargic out there. Ferrero looked like he came to win. He was moving very well and hit his FH well. Nalbandian has often had days like this where he'll hit Fh's into the bottom of the net. He had nothing on his serve which is very unlike what his serve has been since the US Open. Completely and utterly owned today.

Ferrero seemed to be playing well earlier in the tournament as well but for him to win this easily cwas rather surprising. A friend of mine is the fittest person I know, a machine, can run all day and is incredibly strong. He's 5'10", was fat as a kid and still carries around a gut bigger than Dave's. It has nothing to do with a person's level of fitness, as people have different builds.

Has anyone considered the possibility that this injury doubt over Nalbandian's back became more of a factor now that he had to face a Top 50 player rather than a couple of home hopes? People have different builds. YES.
Nalbandian is perfeclty fit. YES.

However, if someone IS fat it will usually significantly correlate to their fitness and this is not up for debate it is fact. I don't even really know how you can type that and expect nobody to call you up on it, it's not just coincidence that you don't see overwieght people at the top of movement based sports.

Nalbandian's timing was way off, especially off the forehand, he was barely getting the ball into play. His forehand return was terrible and he never took command of the rallies. He had a slight chance to perhaps make a comeback in the third set but completely wasted the only BP he had throughout the entire match. He simply wasn't ready to play.

JCF played an exceptional match, the best I'd seen him play in quite some time. His forehand was ON, powerful, penetrating, flat when it had to be. The serve was clicking, it really bailed him out of a lot of those 30-30 service games. Overall, a brilliant performance, who knows? JCF may well be on the comeback trail!

It's a shame it was so one-sided though because this really could've been an epic (not that my brain would've handled another 5-set battle).

I saw an unknown Nalbandian here. I saw him very frustrated since the beginning of the match, god knows why.

1st SET) He gifted the 1st set by trying to make many risky shots (too close to the line, but unfourtunately the ball always falled into the wrong side). JC Ferrero got just a few winners and only played and waited to receive the points from Nalbandian

2nd SET) Nalbandian still risking but never got lucky. On the other hand, JC Ferrero hitting great shots and showing a very good defensive display. The key points were win by the spanish player and the set was over.

3rd SET) Nalbandian trying a little further to get more fire by hitting some very good shots, but Ferrero won a key point to get the break and then keeped his served with a very solid performance, giving David just a single break point.

In resumen: a very solid serve from Ferrero and a lot of unforced errors from Nalbandian.

My toughts: this bad performance from Nalbandian is more likely to be the oasis instead of the desert.

Ferrero gets huge credit.

Yes Nalbandian's performance was surprising but Ferrero has continued to show prolonged flashes of his old form. Perhaps not quite as fast as he was around the court, though his wheels still service him well, but the nasty flat forehand seems to have been rediscovered.

I hope this is a good portent for the rest of this season.

I don't post too much but last 2 months I've seen plenty of threads about people talking on Nalbandian vs Federer H2H.

The only statistics that really counts are this: Federer 12 GS (and might end his career with a couple more at least), while Fat Nalbo has 0 Zero GS (and might end his career like that)

Fat Nalbo is a clown, he only wins when doesn't really matters, but when it does counts he always collapses.

Ferroro was too good and deserves credit for playing smart, but I gree with the poster who wrote it shows Roger's class...because he hasn't had major slumps in his game as appose to mini hiccups like losing in a couple of FINALS!! David caught a pretty drained group of players at the end of a gruelling ATP tour, and everyone had him as the second coming!!

yes he has potenial loads of it...but with the exception of reaching 1 wimbeldon title a couple of years ack he hasn't done anything (where it matters) in slams, to show he should be mentioned in the same breath as roger!

I couldn't believe what I saw out there... Ferrero was hectic. Probably should have even won the last set 6-2, missed an easy backhand pass by his standards.

He was so aggressive with his forehand, I haven't seen that in so long, and his defense was amazing. He's got the short haircut and the prince racket again as well, could be a sign. I hope so anyway.

The Ferrero of old is definitely back ;). Should have gotten that haircut years ago.

Nalby :o. I was hoping for an epic match, 1 that will last til the ESPN2 comes on air. But on second thought, it's better that the winner now has all the energy to fight against Ferrer. Ferrero needs all the help he can get for the next round. Hopes he can keep up the good form.

Has anyone considered the possibility that this injury doubt over Nalbandian's back became more of a factor now that he had to face a Top 50 player rather than a couple of home hopes? I'm not trying to take away credit from Ferrero, who was impressive in the few games that I saw, but I prefer a better explanation than simply "Nalbandian sucked."

well said.

Nalbandian could not have played any worse in the first two sets. So frustrating. Ferrero was playing extremely well and this became more obvious in the third set when Nalbandian actually made him play a bit.

No words but

:worship: :worship: :worship: Ferrero, your fans still believe. You are still a champion. Keep delivering performances like this, and you have so many more great results in you!

This next match is such a huge test. We know how Ferrero has matched up against Ferrer in the past, i.e. poorly. I think if he wins this, he can definitely beat Djokovic or Hewitt in the QF and take on Federer in the SF. Rematch of 2008? I'm actually most worried about David #2.

Leo
01-20-2008, 07:46 AM
now we need Coria to start playing top level again.

Well that's funny because I remember Ferrero getting crushed by Coria right here in 2005, when Coria was a top player and Ferrero was on the decline. The scoreline was similar to today, but this time JCF on top of the Argentine. :)

Nalbandian isn't really fat despite what people say - that's just his build. But the problem with him is that he's lazy - both mentally and physically. He has the talent to win any number of Grand Slams, but he doesn't have the work ethic or the application, and no matter how many coaches/physical trainers etc he has working with him, they will not change that because they can't change his personality - that is down to him, and only him, if he wants to apply himself enough, and at the moment, he doesn't  In my opinion he will never win a Grand Slam because it takes 14 days of hard graft, concentration, and complete focus to do so, and he just isn't capable of it. Sad for his many loyal fans - but true. So many people are so delusional about him though :tape:

Well done to JCFanyway :)

 Never expected such a result. Will be interesting to see how the season continues for both players.

Some words from David afterwards:

He rejected the injury as an excuse for today's poor effort, at the same time acknowledging he might have benefited from some pre-tournament play.

"It would be better if I played some matches before, but there is nothing that I can do," he said.

"Today he played better than me.

"From the start he was playing the better balls and that's the result.

"I didn't play any good shots.

"It's hard to win the match when you don't play."

And JCF's aftermatch interview:

Juan Carlos Ferrero 20.01.08
Sunday, 20 January, 2008

Transcribed Interview

Q. When was the last time you played so well?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, I came playing this well since ‑‑ you know, last year at the end I play good matches. You know, last week in Auckland I played also I think a good level.

But, you know, anyway, I'm improving. When you play matches against like the top players like today, you know, you want to make your best. And I think I did it very well.

Q. What did you like about your game today?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: My serve, and also I think I reach all the opportunities that he gave me, breakpoints and set points. I play very aggressive all the time and I didn't miss it.

You know, it's completely happy about it.

Q. Do you think last year's winning one set against Federer at Wimbledon was a turning point for you?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No, no, no, no, no. No, I had a lot of battles against Federer. I won sometimes and I lose more times than I win.

But, anyway, you know, that match was special to play in Wimbledon against him and I won a set. But I play good, so was one more match for me.

Q. Domachowska has won and will play Venus Williams. Are you voting for her? Do you give her any advice? Is it nice for you to see her doing well?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Of course, it's very nice to see her winning because she was practicing at my academy. I know her very well. So I'm really happy because she's winning. Last year, she miss a lot in the rankings, so she's coming back.

Q. When was the last time you played that well?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I'm playing good tennis since, I don't know, two months, something like this. I practice so hard in December. Last week I played good. At the end of the last year I played good matches against top players. I came playing well.

But also the final of last week give me a lot of confidence to came here and try to play at the same level. I think I'm doing like this.

Q. Did you change anything over your break that you normally have?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Not really. Not really. I was trying the same. But maybe I was trying to be as aggressive as I was before when I was No. 1 or reaching my best results.

So right now I'm trying to go to the court and be very aggressive all the time, be more aggressive than maybe the other guy. So that is giving me good results.

Q. Did you watch Roger Federer last night?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: A little bit, yeah.

Q. What did you make of that?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: You know, I think Tipsarevic, he reach amazing level. He played really good. And Federer maybe, you know, he was a little bit surprised when maybe he was two sets to one down. So he realized that he has to win in the fifth if he wants to win.

So, you know, he didn't play I think his best. But, anyway, he won.

Q. What about your next match against your compatriot?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: It's going to be a special match. We know each other. We live in the same place. So we practice a lot of times together. We are so good friends. So tomorrow is going to be very special. You know, we'll see what's happen.

Q. Is he one of the fittest players around?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, of course, it is. He's playing so good tennis. He's so fit. He likes to play like this. He's with a lot of confidence since last year. He reach the final in Masters. It's going to be tough.

Fired Up!

The amazing thing about this match was that Ferrero was sort of playing casually. The way Nalbandian was spraying errors left and right in the first two sets he didn't really need to do any more than what he did. He can play a lot faster like he did against Kiefer and Jones, and that's what he's going to need to do against Ferrer. Great win nonetheless and apparently he's back inside the top 15!

Aww thanks. Other than the brilliant result, this match was a disappointment for me. I had tickets for Margaret Court Arena where his match was scheduled the night before, and I was fine with it because I thought they'd put it on Vodafone the next day. The only court I didn't have access to was RLA, so of course thats where they put Ferrero. I cried, I begged to exchange my ticket, I tried to sneak in, I tried to buy another ticket, but I was $10 short. So that pretty much ruined my day. And today was just as bad. I had uni orientation, and I thought Ferrero's match would be finished so I came home. If I went straight from uni to the tennis, I would have seen the whole match. My luck is so bad. But saying that, I had the best AO ever. I got to meet Kristen, Kat and Peta (lovely girls, it was an honour to meet you all) and not only did I get 3 photos taken with Ferrero (and one with Ferrer), but I also got kisses and a hug from JC, so that was all I could ever want.

Regardless VAMOS FERRERO, beat David in 5!!!!
