Hewitt vs. Djokovic R16 - Does Hewitt stand a chance?

Absolutely no chance for Hewitt IMO.

He may win one tight set through fighting spirit alone but that's about it.

One thing is clear to me: the last set will be a complete beatdown.

Djoko in straights

Hewitt's victory spiced it up a bit, but I see no chance for him unless a Djokovic's complete mental meltdown will happen and there's no chance for that, as the guy is mentally rock solid after the last year

Nevertheless, the atmosphere will be extreme with the aussie crowd, after what happened in this match against Baghdatis

If Novak serves like he did so far in the tournament then Hewitt has NO chance. He'll win in 3...or possibly 4 sets.

Hewitt has a chance to make it competitive, even if he doesn't win. He has also enough time to recuperate so that physical conditioning doesn't become an issue. And honestly, he has been tested by one tough competitor. Djokovic hasn't.

The last few days' 5 setters have just about shown that everyone is fresh, everyone is hungry, and no one can predict who will take who to the woodshed. Who saw Janko coming within a whisker of beating Federer? Anything can happen.

Exactly. That's another Hewitt's chance, but he must start strong (something he doesn't do often unfortunately) and try to finish it as fastest as it's possible

Wouldn't you want to see Hewitt-Nalbandian?

hewitt's play has been so patchy especially since he is trying to incorporate a more aggressive attitude.

If hewitt at 5-1 in the 4th set shows up, djoker will kill him easily.

if its hewitt at the end of the third set or end of the 5th set, i could see 4 or 5 sets.

hewitt isnt as mentally tough as he used to be and djoker is brimming with confidence. The odds are in noles favor for sure.

It has definately been shown that anything can happen at this AO but Hewitt will have to play his best and be at his peak mental toughness to grind out a win against Djoko. That said, I expect Djoko to win in four.

I expect a similar match to the one at wimbledon last year...Djokovic dominated it, but Hewitt grinded it out and came pretty darn close...He seems really motivated and dedicated at AO this year, so I give him an even bigger edge prolly....Cant judge Djoko's form, he has had minor opponent till now.

Hard to tell with Hewitt in the Aus Open. No one said he was beating Baggy either.

Depends how much Hewitt feeds off the crowd and whether he comes out more confident in himself after that match. Let's face it, that was the tightest match against a top player he has played in a while and WON.

That said, Djokovic in 4 long tough sets (3 hours+ easily)

I just don't get it.

Wimbledon 2007 - Djoke wins 7-6,7-6,4-6,7-6, total beatdown right? Not a tight match at all.

Hewitt just played a tough match against an in-form Baghdatis, number 15 in the world, so he'll be going into his next match with confidence and match tough.

Djoke hasn't played anyone within the top 50, hasn't been challenged at all, and has cruised through all his matches, so it's not as if he's match tough right now.

Hewitt has the home crowd on his side as well, so I mean, how in gods name can you all look at this objectively and say it will be a total beatdown?

I just don't understand this forum, it's like logic goes out the window the second you log on here.

Hewitt's best chance will be to rig the tennis balls so that if he bounces ithem more than 8 times on serving, they explode.

Seriously, Hewitt I think needs to do it in 3 if he has any hope. Djokovic has not really been tested yet and is fresh. Hewitt is now anything but. Another long match, I don't see Hewitt coming out on top.

Djokovic is fragile. We still don't know the history of his shoulder injury and his physical condition is still enigma cause he hasn't been tested by anyone yet. I don't believe that he will breakdown mentally, but in a heat and long match - I wonder if he is fully recovered. If he is fit I see no chance for Lleyton. Straight sets with 2 of them tight.

Think Hewitt has a very good chance. Agree Novak on paper should come through easily but he hasn't faced anyone in the top 20 since the year-end meltdown in Shanghai. He'll be only too aware of that, plus that he's only played Hopman Cup and had three very easy matches here. Throw in Hewitt's never-say-die approach and a partisan crowd and I think Djoko could have his work cut out. I saw the Wimbledon match last year and it was a dogfight.

Nole's got what it takes - in spite of not being challenged thus far, it's obvious enough he has his game in his hands. Moreover, I think he's itching to "punish" Hewitt for "running away" from him in Davis Cup (alleged stomach flu), but Nole won't push it more than necessary - I think he likes to play "minimum effort for maximum effect". I predict straights: some combo of 6-3's and/or 6-4's (unless in some moment of brainfarting Hewitt politely concedes extra breaks for something close to a breadstick).

As much as I want Lleyton to win this one, he just won't. Novak is fresh, he hasn't played much, Hewitt can't say the same. I'd like to be wrong on that but Novak should win in 3 easy sets.

Hewitt may have been able to make it a match if his match against Baghdatis hadn't lasted until 4.30 but now I have a hard time seeing him making it competitive. Not to mention that Djokovic seems to playing well although is it's hard to tell since he hasn't had any tough compitition yet.

I don't know why everybody's talking about the Baggy match, it's not like it's the first time he's been pushed to five sets in a GS, he's physically strong enough for that not be a problem. That said I expect Djoko to take it in four close sets. Even though Hewitt doesn't play the big point that well anymore, he won't stop fighting and will probably force Djoko to win it.

I'm really surprised how lopsided the poll is  I think it's a very close match and potentially a very long one. Novak has been breezing through his matches and I'm not sure how he'll handle a test. It might take him a set or two to find his stride against a quality opponent

I hope he wins :) I said Novak in 5 :p

Fitness is never an issue with Hewitt. In 2005, he survived 2 consecutive 5 setters with Nadal and Nalbandian before beating Roddick in the SFs.

Hewitt is a fighter and always believes in himself. He still thinks no one can beat him and he just doesn't understand how the hell Fed trashes him every time they meet :haha: . Because of that attitude, he's a type of player you want to avoid in slams, and i hate when my favs have to play against him. Sure, Nole can beat him in straights and i expect him to win in 3 or 4, but it could be tricky too. With Bagy, it would be another story, i'm sure we would see much better match, but i'm also sure that Bagy would find the way to lose.

Novak so far has played well. Hewitt did well to get past Baghdatis, but I think his run ends here, although the continued slagging of Hewitt's chances by the ESPN commentators may make me root for him again.

i just checked out their last meeting in wimbledon 07, it was a 4-setter that took them more than 4 hours (!!). so if hewitt can keep it up physically we're in for a long one here.

i think hewitt will prevail due to his mental strength, either in 4 or in 5.
