One question about a strange tactic

Why do players (like Hewitt today) making a sliced backhand approach to the net tend to cover down the line return shot when the cross court return is the perhaps the least risky shot for his opponent to hit.

Is this a wrong tactic by anyway or is it a good one?

Can somebody help me with this question, please?

I dunno. I gues in theory a cc passing shot has a greater distance to travel and therefore should give the guy at the net a split-second longer to react. It could be a ploy aimed at a particular opponent who might favour dtl passing shots at clutch moments.

I'd cover the DTL shot as well because you can get faster to the middle of the court than reacting on a wrong foot pass by your opponent.
