End of week 1 - New AO surface: Your verdict

To me it plays beautifully.
Rebound Ace provided some of the best classics of the last decade or so, and the new surface hold onto that tradition bravely.
Great matches, great pace, great rallies combined with plenty more net approaches. Big serve is a huge advantage, yet Roddick loses what was one of his best serving performances ever.

I already got used to it

I also like the way the ball bounces and the speed of it

I love it. It's better for the play and better for the viewing.

Better for viewing. Forces the players to hit through the ball instead of moon-balling :yeah:

After all the initial worries and reports it would play just like th USO, I think the change in surface has worked out just fine. It does seem to have let to a number of great matches.

If only these balls were smaller...

More credit to what had already been Tennis' best organized event.

As for the surface, it works pretty well

Five stars. Rallies are beautiful, volleys are quite possible, serves CAN work well but more for placement than power... seems fair for everyone. Great switch.

the courts are OK but the balls sucks IMO

I like it.

For me, Aus Open is the best grand slam. Best surface, best atmosphere and played at a time of the season when everyone is at their peak and it usually produces so many classics.

Ok, but there still a lot of things that need to be sorted out.

BTW the court plays much fater, that much is for sure (note the amount of aces - in 2006 I think 90 for the whole tournament was the most for the men  ).

I, for one, am happy about that :)

It sucks.

But I've pretty much accepted it.

plays pretty slow. there have been some VERY long matches. nadal would love this surface, fed definitely not(10-8 vs world no. 48 in the fifth)

R.Federer

It appears to be playing faster already than it did the last few days.

I think it's great. It's pretty fast ( no Fed going five sets does mean it's slow :retard: ) , the bounce is very nice ( not high ), it seems to resist heat ( no complaints so far ). I've really enjoyed what I've seen, a pretty high number of winners but not at the expense of nice rallies, and some net play. Great stuff.

its pretty good because players are not affected by the heat very much all the opposite happened with rebound ace, and its not that bad for the body.

yes I agree this is likely the slams with the best matches and Wimbledon is the worst of course

 at the ppl saying this surface is slow.

when hewitt his hitting bh dtl winners and literally crunching fh's off second serves, you know the surface is medium - fast relative to the rest of the tour.

hewitt was one of the biggest critics / whiners about the surface, and he seems relatively satisfied.

i like the surface. Its very fair.

Seems fine to me.

Far too much has been made of this surface change. The only thing I find noticeable is the lower bounce.

yes I agree, this surface is faster than rebound ace and as you say if it was that slow then Hewitt would keep whinning all over again :o

besides you can not that in how Tipsarevic was punishing federe

Judging by the matches so far and players performance definitely a positive switch from Rebound Ace.

I like it but this is from viewer's perspective. I guess that it must take some time for the players to get used to it since they've played so many years on different courts.

It seems like Miami to me but for some reason the slice serve is really effective on this surface, hence the high number of aces.

After the first two days,i thought the pace of the court was about the same as Wimbledon and AO 2007,but now it seems to be slightly faster than them.

The surface is a winner...so many great matches already. And it plays neutral. Not too fast, not too slow.

the court looks fine to me but the balls do suck though.
the court is so much better than TMS paris last year.(which was basically dead surface. )

Lower bounce favours slice serve.

The key thing for both Federer and Nadal (Federer especially) is bounce rather than speed. Federer want it low, whereas Nadal wants it high. Federer loves the very slow, low bouncing Hamburg clay. I cringe every time I read comments along the lines of slow --> Federer will struggle or slow --> good for Nadal. There is much more to a surface than speed! A low bouncing, slow hard court is definitely better news for Federer than for Nadal. This surface is at least as fast as the old one was, and the bounce is definitely much lower.

I agree but I think that if the main argument is " omg fed taken to 5 sets, the surface must be slow, atp favors nadal !!", you shouldn't expect objective analysis..
