Sam has definately been the quiet achiever of the 07 season!!

And started this year off well with a win in the opening round of qualies at adelaide over Lukas Rosol, Ranked 272 and today plays 149th Oliver Marach of Austria!!

I reckon he'll be top 150-200 in the next 12 monthsAside from the obvious reasons, I enjoyed this match. Got the impression he is a good guy, and his serve was unbelievable. Even Oli said he just had to keep him on court to see if he would get tired [I guess to serve more like an average player ].

Quite supportive of the other Aussies too, though I guess there isn't a whole lot to do in Adelaide at that time of year/in 40'C heat.

And he has qualified for the main draw!
he won his final round 7-6 6-4...

Plays Jamie Baker (a wildcard) in the first round of the main draw...
A good draw IMO, with a win quite possible...regardless of the result he will have cracked the top 300 :)

And in doing so, he will become the 12th Aussie man to rank in the top 300, an obvious improvement in recent times...he is also one of 18 men in the top 400, looks like we are getting some depth back in men's tennis

Now for some more top 100 players...Sam can be one of them :armed:

Smeets has just has his citizenship pushed through by TA and is being sent to Chile as a seventh player! We might not have the quality but we will sure swamp them by sheer weight of numbers!

Begs the Question. Is Fitzy planning to play Smeets in the doubles with Gooch? (thus Groth will lose his place) and if Smeets has only just become an Aussie why have TA given him two Aust and one French grand slam wildcards? :( Another question. If a DC player has to have been a resident of the country he represents for 3 years prior to the tie how did Ball, who has always resided in the US gain eligibility? Just wondering!

Its very complicated when persons from other countries want to represent another country, for us in Australia we are such a multicultural country that it is bound to happen. I think there is big difference between actually being a citizen or resident of the country and fitting the Davis Cup criteria for playing for any country. I can answer Ball's picking with his father Syd Ball, he was born in Australia and played Davis Cup for Australia. This made Ball eligible for Citizenship in Australia even though he never really lived here. He must have just gotten it one day when he was younger.

Saw Groth play at the wildcard play off in Dec and thought that he was much improved. I saw him play last year and thought that he was a one trick wonder (i.e the serve), however this year felt that his ground strokes had improved enormously. Shame he lost second round of qualies, I'm sure given the opportunity he will do better as he finds his feet at this level

jmf07
01-09-2009, 09:00 AM
Interesting to see that he is playing at the Auckland qualies. He has a fairly nice draw with Borvanov in the first round although it is likely he will come across Reynolds in the second match. The other half of his section doesn't look overly strong so if he could account for Reynolds he would probably be a real big chance of going through to the main draw which would be great.

A nice little add on to this win for Sam is that he has gained Special Entry in to a Mexican challenger next week as he was not ranked high enough for direct entry and would not be able to play qualifying now that he is in the semifinals.

Sam has started to find some form in a big challenger in Korea, unfortunately hes run into his points that he gained last year and needs to make at least semis here to defend his points from this time last year. Faces Udomchoke in the quarters now, a winnable match considering some of Danai's losses this season. If Sam can win this tournament (which I don't think will happen) he moves to around 206 in the world which I think is the sort of spot in rankings I believe he deserves. More points to defend in the coming weeks as well so hopefully he can make a run in Uzbekistan next week as well.

jmf07
05-14-2009, 11:55 PM
Expected of him to make Quarters. The match against Udomchoke will be difficult but Groth has a big chance given Udomchoke's dodgy form of late and Groth did beat him a couple of weeks ago. If he made the SF it would be difficult for him to beat Mayer though who looks to be in red hot form this week. Hopefully he can do well in Fergana and most importantly the grass season where I think if he plays well he should get some good results.

jmf07
05-18-2009, 05:48 AM
Pretty impressive loss when you consider that Udomchoke defeated Florian Mayer and Blaz Kavcic in staright sets en route to winning the title. Both had been in very good form. As expected the Fergana entry list is poor. Unfortunately Groth drew Kudryavtsev in his quarter but he should have no troubles progressing to the qf. If he could win his QF he would have a huge chance of progressing to the Final.

His schedule this year has gone like this:

Brisbane, Australia
Auckland, New Zealand
Melbourne, Australia
Spain
Spain
Spain
Jersey, Great Britain
USA
Baton Rouge, USA
Ramat Rarasharon, Israel
Busan, Korea
Fergana, Uzkbekistan

When your at the ranking he is you need to travel a bit to guaruntee entry into challengers in order to rise up the rankings. He has made another semi this week in Uzbekistan so hopefully sooner rather than later he gets inside the top 200 and doesn't have to travel so much.

Sam's made the final of the challenger in Fergana with a straight sets win ove Kirillov. Plays Lukas Lacko in the final which is a winnable match but Lacko did beat Udomchoke pretty convincingly so we'll see.

Lets just hope he wins so he can nail that place down in the top 250 and be guarunteed a spot in the Wimbledon qualifying which is the one tournament I think he has a lot of potential to succeed in.

Groth qualified and has a beautiful draw following the withdrawal of Mardy Fish. Plays Ricardo Mello in the first round and then either qualifier Falla or lucky loser Ram in the second round. Sams got 26 points to defend next week and then another 10 at the end of this week. So if Sam wins one match at Newport he will gain 32 points which should be enough to keep him around the 250 region until US Open qualies which I'm sure Sam will want to play. He is definetly not injured. He is in France in the moment playing in a challenger where he has made the semis. Coming through qualifying and not dropping a set so far, he seems to be in good form.

Ramírez Hidalgo up next, who will be tough on clay. I think Sam has a big chance to win this challenger. If he does somehow win it, he would actually get his ranking inside the top 200 suprisingly enough. Although that won't last long because he has quite a few points to defend next week.

jmf07
04-03-2010, 03:36 AM
Probably was precautionary or had a niggle as he wouldn't have pulled of the semis of a $10k tournament for the sake of it. A nice surprise to see him turning his results around on clay although being indoor helps him and he has had a nice draw. He also got drafted for the KC Explorers in the WTT. He didn't get picked up till the last round but it's good to see him get to play some team tennis.

Sam wins in the first round of a Greek Challenger Tournament with a 64 36 62 win over Lammer. He won the first set after getting a break late into the first set. Then in the second set got broken at 2-2 but then broke back immediately after a Lammer Double Fault at 30-40. Lammer continued the sequence of breaks by breaking back straight away and later on closed the set out with a Groth Double Fault. Groth then got off to a flying start in the third set and broke in the first game and never looked back. Broke Lammer again at 4-2 and then served it out.

It is nice to see the Turks treating Sam so well and it is starting to show in his results. Considering this is a 10k clay tournament you would expect Sam to have a few problems because of his game style (serve and volley) but it seems from the scorelines that he is playing very well. You would think he will go fairly deep in this tournament, perhaps even win it, but he really needs to do well here because where he currently stands he is not going anywhere fast. Come on Sam, take it home.

Good luck in the Final Sam. A fortnight ago Albot took Schoorel to three sets and has recorded a couple of other decent results but I think Sam would be the slight favourite.

Groth won his first round 6-1 6-3. Thibault Venturino will be his second round opponent. Venturino is ranked 1420 in the world and lists himself as an ambidextrous player although he also says that he didn't start playing tennis till he was 80 so his profile is probably not that accurate. Either way Sam should progress through this matchup.

Orno is an unranked qualifier who has a good week by his standards. Sam should put him away fairly easily. Sam definitely seems to be in form, 12 wins on the trot now. Zopp should be a test for him though. If Sammy gets through Zopp I would expect at least a finals showing this week. It'll be interesting to see how long he can keep this winning streak going because it looks as if he is just simply too good for futures events at the moment, not that he isn't just interesting that he is winning so easily.

Next week Sam should be seeded again in the following Belorussian future so hopefully another deep run there. Anyone know Sam's schedule after these Belorussian futures? Is he heading back to Australia? I would think he would stay in Europe in all honesty.

Sam will want to win this week to continue his pursuit to make it into the Australian Open qualifying directly. I'm pretty sure he will be able to do it. 2 more wins like last time in Turkey then Sam will safely make it into the qualies. It was a huge disappointed.

Rochette never won with somebody like Sam, he never even played a game on challanger circuit on hc and now won with Groth in his country on Slam qualys.

Sam hasn't that day return, Laurent was making easy points even on 2nd serve with 120-140km/h when Groth was saving BP's with 220km/h.

It was a one moment to comeback when Sam had 3BP's @ 24 but he wasted them all.

Really it is a shame, it was a very nice opportunity to earn some good money and points here.

I think next huge option it's gonna be if Groth gonna have a good rank to play on grass courts on challangers, ATP Qualys or Wimby Qualys or he gonna wake up fast now.

RustyOz

The "other" Groth had a good win in the dubs with Jonesie, getting up against Looch and Ebden in three entertaining sets. The volatile Groth had his ups and downs, cracking some big serves, one at 233kph, snapping his racquet after the 2nd set loss, arguing the lines with the umpire, hitting some sweet volleys, missing an easy overhead and nailing a return forehand at about 150ks. Good entertainment...

Next up is Jan Hajek.

Smyczek retired at 4-1 down so Sam gets an easy passage into the second round where he will play Rainer Schuettler. Schuettler has been choking a lot of matches of late so hopefully Sam can use his serve to keep it close and see what happens from there.

If he plays like he just did, he will beat Rainer. He's going to have to keep S&V.

Sam lost 76 61. Disappointing second set. He has snuck in as an ALT to the Indian Wells Qualies.

Groth will be playing in Canada this week. This is his scetion of the draw.
[8] Samuel GROTH (AUS) vs Vasek POSPISIL (CAN)
Charles-Antoine BREZAC (FRA) vs [WC] Robert ROTARU (CAN)
Jordan COX (USA) vs Matteo MARRAI (ITA)
[WC] Ahmed EL TABAKH (CAN) vs [3] Matteo VIOLA (ITA)

His first round oppenent Vasek Pospisi is ranked 384 im pretty sure. He has been ranked 260. But had only played in two challenger tournments this year one in Australia where he lost in the final round of quallies and the in USA where he lost in the quater finals to American Michael Russell. Itsa tough little section for Groth but i really hope he can get through. Also he is seeded number 1 in the doubles playin with Bobby Reynolds.

Vasek Pospisil is a great player and he has even has a win under his belt over Nadal in doubles. Samuel should not be too disappointed here. hopefully he can do well in the doubles.

Sam is back to playing the 10k Antalya futures in Turkey. This week he is on the clay where he has defeated a Turkish Wildcard in the first round and will now play the Italian Qualifier Alessandro Collella in the second round. The top seed and the fourth seed (was on Sam's side of the draw) lost in the first round.

Did Groths split? Heard some speculations about it in Twitter.

Jarka tweeted this lately....

Some people love you and care about you but some are with you only for what you have and for what they can take from you for free!!!

Among other new-beginnings-eqsue stuff. Strange. I originally thought it was about the horrible Fed Cup losses, but this don't fit?

He had surgery on his shoulder a couple weeks before they split up. Hasn't played since, I'm guessing he's still not on the courts.

What? If his shoulders cant take tennis they cant take AFL.

jmf07
08-06-2011, 05:26 PM
I think it's safe to say the shoulders weren't the issue. Hopefully it all works out well for him. It would be nice to see him playing again one day but only if his heart is back in the game. At least he can hold his head high after the way he dealt with what happened when many others wouldn't have been able to do the same thing.

By the sounds of that article it sounds like he wont be coming back to tennis anytime soon.

Yes let's all support the tennis player and make Sam out to be the bad party because he quit tennis. Not many people know the full details of it so it is stupid to go making a conclusion about something you probably don't know a lot about. There is a whole lot more to the story though than Jarmilla's tweets which I'm guessing you don't know about and Sam deserves full credit for keeping his mouth shut and not letting it become an even bigger mess in public.
