Ian Flanagan, the British no. ? at 900 in the world has just beaten Australia's second best player 7/6(2) 7/6(3). :worship: Flanagan.

This happens a day after Jamie "Golam" Delgado edged out Taylor Dent!

Well done to Flanagan but Mark P is in big trouble. Has he won a first round match since AO?

Yeah 1 or 2 - however many he won at the World Team Cup. Flanagan played well though but Flip could have won - he shanked quite a lot of shots.

Yeah true but it all contributes to his confidence or lack of it...he is going to take one hell of a dive after Wimby - similar to Costa and Verkerk I fear.

 hate to take anything away from the Brit's awesome win, but this match just goes to show you how much Mark is sucking this year. But still a win is a win, and good on Flanagan:D

* There are only 2-choices for Mark Poo Poo; if he's not commited to the game of tennis at ripe old age of 27* then he may as well quite!!! Otherwise get your shit together man & take this profession seriously~ then we all know he can win tournaments!

I never liked what Cash said at AO~ BUT since then it seems like Mark has lived up to his reputation of being lazy & lacking spirit!

The local media is gonna have a field day with this one! I wonder if we'll see yet another picture of Delta! I like the girl... but I don't appreciate seeing her photo on the cover of "Australian Tennis Magazine"!

Good luck to Jonas and Robin/PimPim!

Philippoussis Humiliated at Queen's

LONDON - Mark Philippoussis's Wimbledon warm-up turned into little more than a humiliation Tuesday when the Australian household name was beaten by a Welshman ranked 849 places below him.

Philippoussis, runner-up at Wimbledon last year and a former winner of the Stella Artois Championships, lost 7-6, 7-6 to Ian Flanagan in one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history.

Ranked 866 in the world, Flanagan had never played an ATP-level match in his life. Victory in this one match will almost double his career's earnings.

Since turning professional in 2000, the Briton had amassed $6,229. Tuesday's victory nets him at least $5,920.

By contrast, Philippoussis is one of the biggest names in world tennis. He has reached the final of two grand slams, has been ranked as high as eight in the world and has earned more than $6.5 million.

But on a scorching day at London's Queen's Club, the 22-year-old from north Wales matched Philippoussis point for point.

The Australian played poorly but still it was a major achievement for Flanagan and he kept his nerve to win in two straight tiebreak sets.

I didn't say anything about the WHOLE of Australian tennis at all - he has humiliated it for a day and that is it - come off it, the Aussies aren't the driving force of tennis at the moment are they?!! They have done much better than this.

As for style, i watched some of the match and he hasn't got a particularly fast serve but he placed it very well and even out-aced Philippoussis and won more points on his first and second serves than him. He doesn't come in often but when he is forced to he can put away some good volleys. He is bascially a baseliner and doesn't have any particular weapons either - he is just waiting for errors. It wouldn't surprise me if Hanescu blows him off court unfortunately. Goran would have given him a better match because he can't rally on the baseline to save his life. What makes it more incredible is tht Flanagan has only played three events this year - a low finish in the GB Satellite and heavy first round defeats in two British futures events, one defeat incidentally to Delgado...

mark is soooo good-looking on that cover :)

well...let's just hope he'll get his game back in time for wimbledon...
i don't want him to lose in the first round...
btw, didn't he lose in the first rnd of queen's last year?
he then went on to reach the wimbledon finals...
so maybe he's on the right track haha

OMG The newsreaders are loving this!
It seems that just because your ranking is in the 800's (LOL!) you're a crappy player, incapable of beating someone at the top of the game (apparently). Channel Ten "The scud loses ANOTHER first round match, to a player ranked almost 900 in the world!" They also said this was his first match... Is it Ians first top ATP event? I read that he's played a couple of other matches this year... hmm... good luck to him anyway, I'm really enjoying the way newsreaders who know little or nothing about tennis, are saying this is such a catastrophe... last year it was Karlovic... lol

Is Poo Poo Scud injured?? He suddenly pulled out of his doubles match with Lleyton Hewitt~ so maybe this is Mark's excuse?! Probably he was just being lame & couldn't be bothered with doubles because of the humiliation he was feeling!

Anyway Aussie Tennis is still OK so long as Rocky Llegs keeps performing! After he retires however we'll need to start recruiting from overseas*@@*.

Does anybody else see Mark P ranked somewhere along the 80's after Wimbledon? He really can't get his game together. Verkerk dropped to 50 something after RG and he at least made it to the third round, which I seriously think is not going to happen with Mark at Wimby. I think this looks like the end of a career :(. Mark doesn't look like the kinda guy who would start once again from scratch and starts playing qualifying tournaments while ranked 80 something. Maybe... Mark.. it's a good time to try that acting career or the designing thing, cuz there's now way you can suck at that more than at pro tennis :p

Credit to that Flanagan guy (although I have NO idea who he is ;)) for keeping it together in a big event :)

I'd post a picture of a rock, and another picture of someones bottom, if I werent too lazy to go and find them on the net

Just seems so much worse because of how well he did last year

He'll find some of his form eventually.....hopefully before he loses his desire to continue playing (although working his way back from the injuries he's had, I couldnt really doubt his desire to play)
